(2) Wet volcanic ash:
1 On the static probes, pitot probes, ice detectors (if installed), Angle of Attack (AOA) sensors and Total Air Temperature (TAT) sensors, remove the TAPE - ADHESIVE from the bottom side of the FILM - POLYETHYLENE (if installed before the volcanic ash condition) to let the water drain.
2 If no FILM - POLYETHYLENE was installed on the probes/sensors before the volcanic ash condition:
a Remove the contamination from the protection covers/devices (if installed before the volcanic ash condition) and their adjacent structure with Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
b If no protection covers/devices were installed on the probes/sensors before the volcanic ash condition:
a Clean the top of the aircraft first and then the bottom.
c After cleaning, do an inspection of the recesses, empty spaces and outlets on the top of the aircraft (e.g. precooler exhausts). Make sure that there is no contamination on the inner surfaces of these parts.
4 Refer to the recorded positions and remove all the TAPE - ADHESIVE and the FILM - POLYETHYLENE installed during the preservation procedure.

Inspection after a Flight through Volcanic Ash, after Volcanic Sulfur Odor or after Volcanic Ash Contamination on the Ground
1. Reason for the Job
This procedure gives information about the inspection of the aircraft:
- After a flight in volcanic ash conditions, or
- If there was a sulfur odor during a flight in volcanic ash conditions, or
- After volcanic ash contamination when the aircraft was on the ground.
NOTE: Definition of volcanic ash:
Volcanic ash is small particles of rock powder that are blown out of a volcano. These particles can go into the atmosphere to the aircraft flight levels. They can move thousands of miles and stay in the atmosphere for long periods.
Many events show that engine and/or APU operation in volcanic ash environment can cause important damage to the engine and/or APU.
It is the responsibility of the operator to make the decision to do the inspection after volcanic ash conditions.Volcanic ash is small particles of rock powder that are blown out of a volcano. These particles can go into the atmosphere to the aircraft flight levels. They can move thousands of miles and stay in the atmosphere for long periods.
Many events show that engine and/or APU operation in volcanic ash environment can cause important damage to the engine and/or APU.
NOTE: The necessary inspections are related to the preservation level of the aircraft before the volcanic ash event.
The inspections are necessary for the components/systems for which there was no preservation or unsatisfactory preservation (volcanic ash found behind the protection covers/devices).
The inspection of the probes/sensors is always necessary.
The inspections are necessary for the components/systems for which there was no preservation or unsatisfactory preservation (volcanic ash found behind the protection covers/devices).
The inspection of the probes/sensors is always necessary.
NOTE: An adjustable access platform (2.5m to 17m (8.2ft to 55.9ft)) is necessary to get access to the different parts of the aircraft during this inspection.

A. General
(a) Volcanic ash is hard, very abrasive and acid (pH between 2 and neutral).
It can cause erosion/abrasion, etching or shot-peening on the surfaces and can remove the finish/protection layers and thus cause damage/corrosion.
(b) The ash particles can be of different sizes but the texture of volcanic ash is almost the same as talcum powder. It can go into all holes/openings and go through many seals. Volcanic ash will stay:
(c) The volcanic ash will melt when it goes through the combustion chamber of the engines.
The melted ash has very high adhesive qualities and bonds to engine parts and thus decreases engine performance. It can cause blockage of the fuel injectors and can cause an engine shutdown.
(2) Inspection requirements
(a) Volcanic ash can cause severe damage/contamination on the structure/systems of the aircraft.
It is not possible to estimate the quantity and the type of damage after volcanic ash contamination. Thus, it is necessary to do a full inspection of the aircraft to know the damage and make a decision about the necessary repair/action.
(b) All the necessary inspections are visual unless the text gives other instructions.
Operators can refer to the Non-destructive Testing Manual (NTM) and use non-destructive procedures.
(c) If you find damage to the aircraft structure, refer to the Structural Repair Manual (SRM). The SRM has the approved damage limits and repair procedures.
(d) If you find damage to paint/protection, refer to the Structural Repair Manual (SRM). The SRM has the approved paint/protection repair procedures.
(e) Examine the aircraft surfaces, structures, systems for contamination, erosion/abrasion, dents, etching, delamination or other damage.
Subtask 05-51-25-210-075-A WARNING:
DO NOT BREATHE VOLCANIC ASH. DO NOT GET VOLCANIC ASH IN YOUR EYES. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHES, EYE GOGGLES AND A RESPIRATOR MASK. MAKE SURE THAT THE RESPIRATOR MASK CAN REMOVE VOLCANIC ASH FROM THE AIR. VOLCANIC ASH CAN CAUSE EYE IRRITATION AND INJURY TO THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.

CAUTION:
DO NOT RUB THE SURFACE WHEN YOU REMOVE THE ASH FROM THE AIRCRAFT. IF YOU RUB THE SURFACE, YOU CAN CAUSE EROSION/ABRASION.
A. Removal of Volcanic Ash Contamination from the External Surfaces NOTE: If the aircraft was on the ground with preservation from volcanic ash:
(1) Dry volcanic ash: - Aircraft cleaning is not necessary if you cleaned it before the removal of the protective covers (Ref. AMM TASK 10-11-00-555-014).
CAUTION:
IF THERE IS DRY ASH, DO NOT USE FLUIDS TO REMOVE THE ASH. IF THERE IS A LAYER OF ASH ON THE AIRCRAFT SURFACES, REMOVE THE ASH WITH A VACUUM CLEANER (OR, IF YOU CANNOT USE A VACUUM CLEANER, USE AN AIR BLOWER, A SOFT CLOTH OR A HAND BRUSH). FLUIDS CAN MIX WITH THE ASH AND MAKE A PASTE THAT CAN CAUSE EROSION/ABRASION. THIS PASTE CAN GO INTO AREAS THAT ARE NOT EASY TO CLEAN.
CAUTION:
WHEN YOU BLOW DRY ASH WITH AN AIR BLOWER, MAKE SURE THAT THE ASH DOES NOT CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE OTHER COMPONENTS (PROBES, ETC.).
(a) If there is a layer of volcanic ash on the aircraft surfaces, remove the volcanic ash with the VACUUM CLEANER, the BLOWING EQUIPMENT - DRY AIR, Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) or the BRUSH - BRISTLED, SOFT. (2) Wet volcanic ash:
CAUTION:
USE A LOW-PRESSURE WATER SUPPLY EQUIPMENT WITH A MAXIMUM FLOW TO REMOVE WET CONTAMINATION. DO NOT USE A HIGH-PRESSURE SPRAYING EQUIPMENT. DO NOT POINT THE WATER JET IN THE DIRECTION OF THE PROBES AND SENSORS. YOU MUST CLEAN THESE AREAS BY HAND. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, DAMAGE TO THE PROBES, WINDSHIELD, DOORS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
(a) If there is a layer of wet volcanic ash on the aircraft surfaces: 1 On the static probes, pitot probes, ice detectors (if installed), Angle of Attack (AOA) sensors and Total Air Temperature (TAT) sensors, remove the TAPE - ADHESIVE from the bottom side of the FILM - POLYETHYLENE (if installed before the volcanic ash condition) to let the water drain.
- Remove the contamination from the probes/sensors and their adjacent structure with Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
- Install the protection covers/devices (Ref. AMM TASK 10-11-00-555-013).
- Apply the FILM - POLYETHYLENE (diamond shape (length 600 mm (23.62 in.) and width 600 mm (23.62 in.))) on the protection covers/devices on the AOA sensors.
- Seal the FILM - POLYETHYLENE at the top and on the sides with the TAPE - ADHESIVE. Do not seal the bottom corner of the FILM - POLYETHYLENE on a length of 50 mm (1.97 in.) to let the water drain.
- Make sure that the FILM - POLYETHYLENE is not too tight on the protection covers/devices on the AOA sensors.
- Record the locations where you apply the FILM - POLYETHYLENE and the TAPE - ADHESIVE.
- Apply the FILM - POLYETHYLENE (square shape (length 600 mm (23.62 in.) and width 600 mm (23.62 in.))) on the protection covers/devices on the probes/sensors.
NOTE: You can apply the FILM - POLYETHYLENE in rectangular shape for the probes/sensors that are near from each other.
- Seal the FILM - POLYETHYLENE at the top and on the sides with the TAPE - ADHESIVE. Do not seal the bottom side of the FILM - POLYETHYLENE to let the water drain.
- Make sure that the FILM - POLYETHYLENE is not too tight on the protection covers/devices on the probes/sensors.
- Record the locations where you apply the FILM - POLYETHYLENE and the TAPE - ADHESIVE.
a Clean the top of the aircraft first and then the bottom.
NOTE: Cleaning from the top to the bottom is recommended to make sure that the contamination is fully removed from the aircraft.
b Carefully clean the recesses and empty spaces (cavities) on the aircraft (e.g. slats, flaps, brakes, landing gears and landing gear bays) where particles can stay. c After cleaning, do an inspection of the recesses, empty spaces and outlets on the top of the aircraft (e.g. precooler exhausts). Make sure that there is no contamination on the inner surfaces of these parts.
4 Refer to the recorded positions and remove all the TAPE - ADHESIVE and the FILM - POLYETHYLENE installed during the preservation procedure.
B. Internal Inspection
