4. Procedure
Subtask 56-11-11-220-051-A
A. Inspection of the Windshields
NOTE: In inspection tables, the word "impaired" refers to an unsatisfactory view through the windshield.
If you cannot see correctly through the windshield, then the windshield is unserviceable and the installation of a new windshield is necessary.
   (1) Examine the windshields for:
     (a) Cracks
     (b) Scratches
NOTE: There are two procedures to measure the depth of the scratches. The fingernail procedure helps you to measure an approximate depth of the scratches. The MITUTOYO surface-tester procedure helps you to measure the accurate depth of the scratches. If the MITUTOYO surface tester is available, the MITUTOYO surface-tester procedure is recommended because it gives accurate measurement results.
1 If you see scratches, do a check of the depth of the scratches:
     (c) Chips
     (d) Delamination
NOTE: There is a tape on the windshield. This tape is necessary to prevent cracks where there is no heat (corners of the windows).
1 When you measure the delamination, make sure that you do it from the outside of the aircraft.
     (e) Discoloration
     (f) Interlayer microflakes
     (g) Bubbles
1 When you measure the bubbles, make sure that you do it from the outside of the aircraft.
     (h) Burn signs
     (i) Transparency
     (j) Rain-repellent fluid residue
     (k) Damage on the soft liner
NOTE: This damage is only applicable to the windshield panel that has a soft liner (self-healing liner), SGS supplier, P/N's STA320-1-5-1 and STA320-2-5-1.
1 If necessary, repair the soft liner to remove the scratches or other damage (Ref. AMM TASK 56-11-11-300-002).
     (l) Heating film cracks.
