Sample Fuel for Volcanic-Ash Contamination Analysis
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
WARNING:
PUT THE SAFETY DEVICES AND THE WARNING NOTICES IN POSITION BEFORE YOU START A TASK ON OR NEAR:
1. Reason for the Job- THE FLIGHT CONTROLS
- THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES
- THE LANDING GEAR AND THE RELATED DOORS
- COMPONENTS THAT MOVE.
NOTE: This task can be done together with TASK 12-32-28-281-001 (Drain Water Content) TASK 12-32-28-281-003 (Sample Fuel for Microbiological Contamination Analysis).
NOTE: AIRBUS recommends that there must be more than 10% content of fuel in each tank. This is necessary to cover the water drain valve outlet, so that the water drain valves can operate satisfactorily.

A. Safety Precautions
(2) As necessary, use the applicable SAFETY BARRIERS, specified by the operator's instructions and your local regulations.
(3) On the panel 400VU:
(5) If the fuel temperature is less than 0 DEG.C (32.00 DEG.F) and/or the water drain valves are frozen, to keep the flight turnaround time either:
Subtask 12-32-28-010-078-A WARNING:
OBEY THE FUEL SAFETY PROCEDURES.
(1) You must obey the fuel safety procedures (Ref. AMM TASK 28-00-00-910-001) when you do work on the fuel system. (2) As necessary, use the applicable SAFETY BARRIERS, specified by the operator's instructions and your local regulations.
(3) On the panel 400VU:
- Make sure that the landing-gear control-lever 6GA is in the DOWN position
- Put a warning notice in position to tell persons not to operate the landing gear.
(5) If the fuel temperature is less than 0 DEG.C (32.00 DEG.F) and/or the water drain valves are frozen, to keep the flight turnaround time either:
- Do the cold weather maintenance procedure to warm the water drain valve (Ref. AMM TASK 12-31-28-660-001)
or - Remove the fuel samples 30 minutes after the refuel procedure.
NOTE: Removal of the fuel samples after 30 minutes will not remove the water content as satisfactorily as samples removed one hour after the refuel procedure.
(6) If the APU is in operation during this procedure, you must make sure the fuel tank pumps are set to OFF. - Do not apply too much force to open the water drain valve.
B. Get Access
(1) For access to the center-tank water-drain valves, open the applicable access panels:
Subtask 12-32-28-110-055-A (1) For access to the center-tank water-drain valves, open the applicable access panels:
C. Cleaning
(1) Mix a solution of 1 part of WATER - DISTILLED to 3-4 parts of Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Isopropyl Alcohol - (Material No.08BBD1) in a CONTAINER - CLEAN, APPLICABLE.
(2) Clean the applicable drain tool and the CONTAINER-FUEL RESISTANT, TRANSPARENT PLASTIC with the solution.
Subtask 12-32-28-480-056-A (1) Mix a solution of 1 part of WATER - DISTILLED to 3-4 parts of Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Isopropyl Alcohol - (Material No.08BBD1) in a CONTAINER - CLEAN, APPLICABLE.
(2) Clean the applicable drain tool and the CONTAINER-FUEL RESISTANT, TRANSPARENT PLASTIC with the solution.
NOTE: If you use a CONTAINER-CLEAN, STERILIZED, TRANSPARENT GLASS, cleaning of the CONTAINER-CLEAN, STERILIZED, TRANSPARENT GLASS with the solution is not necessary.
(3) Make sure that the applicable drain tool and the CONTAINER-FUEL RESISTANT, TRANSPARENT PLASTIC are fully dry before you use them. D. Preparation of the Equipment

- 98A28101000000 ADAPTING PIPE - WATER DRAINING FROM FUEL
or the - 98D28104000000 PIPE ADAPTING-WATER DRAINING
to the bottle and funnel of the 98A28104000000 PURGER - WATER DRAIN.

A. Sample Fuel for Volcanic-Ash Contamination Analysis for Wing Tanks and Center Tank
(1) Do a visual check of the NACA intakes for signs of blockage (Ref. AMM TASK 28-12-47-200-001).
(2) For the wing and center-tank water-drain valves:
(3) Examine the applicable water drain valve for leakage. Leaks are not permitted.
(a) After the test samples are collected, hold the samples up to the light. Usually, uncontaminated fuel is visually bright and clear.
(b) You must wait for 15 minutes to identify if there are any visual signs of particles. If you find the fuel color is dark or there are any visual signs of particles, you must clean all of the fuel tanks.
Subtask 12-32-28-710-050-A (1) Do a visual check of the NACA intakes for signs of blockage (Ref. AMM TASK 28-12-47-200-001).
(2) For the wing and center-tank water-drain valves:
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE PLUNGER OF THE TOOL ALIGNS CORRECTLY WITH THE WATER DRAIN VALVE. INCORRECT ALIGNMENT OF THE TOOL CAN CAUSE:
(a) Push the center of the applicable water drain valve with the 98A28104000000 PURGER - WATER DRAIN and drain approximately 1.0 l (0.26 USgal) of fuel from the water drain valve. - THE WATER DRAIN VALVE TO STAY IN THE OPEN POSITION AFTER THE TOOL IS REMOVED
- A FUEL LEAK.
NOTE: A rubber shield prevents fuel leakage.
(b) Remove the 98A28104000002 TOOL - PURGING from the water-drain valve. (3) Examine the applicable water drain valve for leakage. Leaks are not permitted.
NOTE: This step is very important at the center-tank water-drain valves 94QM and 95QM, where access is not easy.
(4) Identify each sample with a label that shows: - The aircraft number
- The time and the date of the sample
- The source of the sample (which fuel tank and drain)
- All additives that you know about.
B. Operational Test
(1) Do an operational test of the main fuel-pump system with fuel flow by transfer (Ref. AMM TASK 28-21-00-710-007).
(2) Do an operational test of the LH(RH) LP Valve (Ref. AMM TASK 28-24-00-710-002).
