3. Job Set-up

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002).
   (2) On the panel 25VU, make sure that the APU MASTER SW pushbutton switch is OFF.
   (3) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in the cockpit to tell persons not to start the APU.
   (4) Make sure that the hydraulic systems are depressurized
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001).

C. Get Access
   (1) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position below the APU access door 315AL and 316AR.
   (2) Open the access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-010-001).
   (3) Set the light switch 11LJ to the ON position.
4. Procedure
Subtask 49-00-00-280-058-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Preliminary Check
   (1) Make sure that you did the aircraft external inspection.
   (2) Do the pre-conditioning with the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 12-33-21-618-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 12-33-21-618-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 12-33-21-618-001).
   (3) Make sure that no exhaust gases from the main engines and/or the ground support equipment go into the APU air intake during the pre-conditioning.
   (4) Do a check in the cabin for odor/fumes.
   (5) Do a check of the APU air intake and the APU inlet plenum looking for de-icing fluid contamination (Ref. AMM TASK 49-00-00-200-803).

B. Oil smoke at the exhaust
   (1) If you sense oil smoke at the exhaust during the operation of the APU do the troubleshooting procedure TSM 49-00-81-810-888
Subtask 49-00-00-790-075-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
C. Oil odor in cabin
NOTE: After each step, do the cleaning of the APU engine and the APU access doors when you identify the source of the leakage. If you do not do, the odor can continue.
NOTE: Use a LIGHT SOURCE - ULTRA-VIOLET to identify possible oil leakage.
   (1) Do a check for signs of oil leak in the area of the APU plenum.
  • If the APU plenum is dirty, continue the task to identify the source of the leakage.
   (2) Do a check for signs of oil leak in the load compressor cavity drain (2) with a LIGHT SOURCE - ULTRA-VIOLET.
  • If you find oil in the drain:
     (a) Do an inspection of the load-compressor buffer-pressure tube-assembly, the housing ports and the tee-fitting (Ref. AMM TASK 49-21-00-200-801).
       1 If you find blockage, replace the load-compressor buffer-pressure tube-assembly (Ref. AMM TASK 49-21-00-200-801).
       2 If you find no blockage in the load-compressor buffer-pressure tube-assembly, replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-003).
   (3) Do a check for signs of oil leak at APU lines/tubes and tube fittings:
NOTE: Be careful with the fittings of the APU fuel manifolds (5) and oil/fuel lines:
  • Inlet Guide Vane Actuator (IGVA)/Bleed Control Valve (BCV) supply and return lines.
  • Fuel supply tube (4).
  • Fuel Control Unit (FCU)/Oil Pump, BCV actuator and IGVA drain tube (1).
  • Exhaust muffler and Air Bypass Plenum drain tube (6)/combustor housing drain tube (3).
  • Fuel supply line and interface to APU FCU.
     (a) If there are leaks in the lines or fittings:
       1 Do a check for the correct TORQUE.
       2 Repair and/or replace the tubes, the connectors and the seals as necessary.
   (4) Examine the draining holes for blockage. If necessary, free the blockage (Ref. AMM TASK 49-17-00-200-805) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-17-00-300-002).
   (5) Do a check of the APU seals (Ref. AMM TASK 49-13-00-200-803).
   (6) Do a check for signs of leak in the upper surface of the air duct/access door 316AR and/or over the access door 315AL.
     (a) Air duct/access door 315AL:
       1 If you find leakage in the air duct/access door 315AL, on the front area of the APU as the most possible cause of the source of the leakage, follow the paragraph "Leaks on access door 315AL".
       2 If you do not find leakage, follow the paragraph "Leaks on access door 316AR".
     (b) Access door 316AR:
       1 If you find leakage in the access door 316AR, on the rear area of the APU as the most possible cause of the source of the leakage, follow the paragraph "Leaks on access door 316AR".
       2 If you do not find leakage, follow the paragraph "Leaks on access door 315AL."
     (c) If you do not find leakage in the upper surface of the "Air duct/access door 315AL" and/or over the access door 316AR, follow the paragraphs, "Leaks on access door 315AL" and "Leaks on access door 316AR".
     (d) If you do not find leakage at the end of the sequence, follow the paragraph "Last check".
Subtask 49-00-00-790-076-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
D. Leaks on access door 315AL
   (1) Do a check for signs of oil leak around oil filler cap (1), the oil pressure servicing-port (3) and the overflow drain valve (4):
   (2) Do a check for signs of oil leak around the de-oiling solenoid valve (2):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing of the de-oiling solenoid valve (2) (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-49-000-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-49-400-002)..
   (3) Do a check if the oil level in the oil reservoir is above the full mark on the oil sight glass (1).
  • If the oil level is above the full mark:
     (a) Correct it with the overflow drain tool (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-004).
   (4) Do a check for signs of fuel leak around the fuel control unit (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packings and/or the fuel control unit (1) as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-32-11-000-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-32-11-400-002).
   (5) Do a check for signs of oil leak around the oil level sensor (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing of the oil level sensor (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 49-93-17-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-93-17-400-001).
   (6) Do a check for signs of oil leak in the area of the oil pressure switch (1):
   (7) Do a check for signs of oil leak in the area of the oil pressure switch (1) and its flexible line (2):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing and/or the oil pressure switch as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-94-14-000-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-94-14-400-002).
   (8) Do a check for signs of leak around the circumference of generator to gearbox mounting flange (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the sealing plate and/or the APU generator as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-400-001) and/or (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-400-001).
   (9) Do a check for signs of oil leak around the generator drain plug (2):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the sealing plate and/or the APU generator as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-400-001) and/or (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-400-001).
   (10) Do a check for signs of leak in the area of the flange of the starter motor (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing and/or the starter motor (1) as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-42-51-000-007) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-42-51-400-007).
   (11) Do a check for signs of leaks in the area of the load compressor scroll to gearbox split line:
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Clean, remove the grease, run the APU and do an inspection again.
     (b) If the leak continues, replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-003).
NOTE: APU assembly fluid can be present at the split line area, not to be mistaken with oil leak.
   (12) Do a check for signs of oil leaks in the area of lubrication oil filter (1) and/or the AC generator scavenge oil-filter (2):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing of the related filter housing (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-41-920-001) or (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-41-920-002).
   (13) Do a check for signs of leak at the oil sump magnetic drain plug (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packingS (2) (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-42-000-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-42-400-002).
   (14) Do a check for signs of leak in the area of the oil sensor temperature (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing (2) and/or the oil sensor temperature (1) as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-51-000-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-51-400-002).
   (15) Do a check for signs of leak in the area of the oil cooler (1) and around lines (2) from the gearbox to oil cooler fittings (3):
NOTE: Be careful with the oil cooler retainers. Bent and/or broken oil transfer tube retainers may cause the tubes to loosen and let oil leak past the o-rings.
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the oil cooler (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-44-000-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-44-400-003) and/or the packings of the oil lines connectors and/or the oil lines as necessary.
   (16) Do a check for signs of oil leak in the area of the cooling fan (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the seals and/or the Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) and the cooling fan as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-53-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-53-400-001).
Subtask 49-00-00-790-077-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
E. Leaks on access door 316AR
   (1) Do a check for signs of oil leak in the area of the gearbox vent tube (2) from the air oil separator to the exhaust and in the area of the rear bearing vent tube (1):
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the packing and/or clean the gearbox vent tube (2) as necessary.
     (b) Replace the packing and/or clean the rear bearing vent tube (1) as necessary.
   (2) Do a check for signs of oil leak at rear bearing oil transfer tubes supply (1) and scavenge (2) and fitting:
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Do a check of the correct TORQUE.
     (b) Replace the oil transfer tubes seal (Ref. AMM TASK 49-21-00-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-21-00-400-001)
     (c) Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-003).
   (3) Do a check for signs of leak in the area of inlet guide vane actuator:
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the seals and/or the fuel lines to the actuator and/or the inlet guide vane actuator as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-23-51-000-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-23-51-400-003).
   (4) Do a check for signs of leak in the area of the bleed control valve:
  • If you find leakage:
     (a) Replace the bleed control valve (Ref. AMM TASK 49-51-53-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-51-53-400-001).
Subtask 49-00-00-790-078-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
F. Last check
   (1) If you do not find leakage at this point:
     (a) Do a check of the cooling fan and put a clean Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) over the top of the discharge-duct and insert it into the cooling fan hood.
  • If there are signs of contamination:
       1 Remove the cooling-fan discharge-duct (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-53-000-001) and examine with a LIGHT SOURCE - ULTRA-VIOLET for contamination inside the duct.
  • If there is oil contamination inside the cooling-fan:
         a Replace the seals and/or the cooling fan as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-53-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-53-400-001).
     (b) Remove the APU bleed-air duct elbow (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-003) and the bleed control valve (2) (Ref. AMM TASK 49-51-53-000-001).
     (c) Examine the removed components with a LIGHT SOURCE - ULTRA-VIOLET and with a clean Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) and make sure that there are not signs of contamination.
  • If there are signs of contamination:
       1 Clean the APU bleed-air duct elbow and install it (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-003).
       2 Clean the bleed control valve and install it (Ref. AMM TASK 49-51-53-400-001).
       3 Do a check of the cooling fan.
       4 Do a check of the load compressor witness drain.
5. Close-up

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Set the light switch 11LJ to the OFF position.
   (3) Close the APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).
   (4) Remove the access platform(s).

C. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) De-energize the ground service network
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-862-002).
   (2) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
   (3) Remove the ground support and maintenance equipment, the special and standard tools and all other items.
