Adjustment of the NLG doors


WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE GROUND SAFETY-LOCKS ARE IN POSITION ON THE LANDING GEAR. THIS WILL PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT OF THE LANDING GEAR, AND THUS POSSIBLE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT.

1. Reason for the Job
NOTE: This task can help you to decrease the fuel consumption.
NOTE: Two persons with the applicable communication tool are necessary to do this procedure:
  • One in the cockpit, and
  • Other in the NLG bay.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 32-22-00-860-052-A
A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the landing gears (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-001).
   (2) On panel 400VU:
  • Make sure that the landing gear control-lever (6GA) is in the DOWN position
  • Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the landing gears.
   (3) On panel 110VU:
  • Make sure that the free-fall control handle is folded into the center console
  • Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the free-fall control handle.
   (4) Open the NLG doors and the MLG doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-22-00-010-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-010-001).
   (5) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the MLG doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-002).
   (6) Obey the flight configuration precautions (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-860-001).
   (7) Lift the aircraft at the forward jacking point (Ref. AMM TASK 07-11-00-581-003).
   (8) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in position below zone 123.

4. Procedure
Subtask 32-22-00-020-050-A
A. Disconnection of the Rotating Rod of the Aft NLG Door
NOTE: You must disconnect the rotating rod (5) to replace the lockwasher (3) before adjustment of the rotating rod (5).
   (1) If you do the adjustment of the NLG doors after removal/installation of the aft NLG door:
  • Do not disconnect the rotating rod from the replaced aft NLG door.
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL A COTTER PIN. EACH TIME YOU REMOVE A COTTER PIN DURING THE TASK, DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. A LOOSE COTTER PIN CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND.
   (2) Remove and discard the cotter pin (6).
   (3) Remove the nut (7) and the washer (8).
   (4) Remove the bolt (9) and disconnect the rotating rod from the aft NLG door.
   (5) Disengage the tabs of the lockwasher (3) from the nut (2).
   (6) Loosen the nut (2).
   (7) Remove the rotating rod (5) from the universal joint (1) and discard the lockwasher (3).
   (8) Install the rotating rod (5) with the nut (2) and the new AIPC 52-82-31-02-830 LOCKWASHER (3) on the universal joint (1).
   (9) Turn the nut (4) until dimension N is approximately 209 mm (8.2284 in.).

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE TRAVEL RANGES OF THE LANDING GEAR ARE CLEAR.
C. Retraction of the NLG
NOTE: Two persons with the applicable communication tool are necessary to do this procedure:
  • One in the cockpit, and
  • Other in the NLG bay.
   (1) Remove the access platform(s).
   (2) Use the TIE WRAP(S) to install the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE on:
  • Left MLG extension proximity-sensors 21GA and 23GA
  • Right MLG extension proximity-sensors 20GA and 22GA.
   (3) Remove the safety device from the NLG (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-081-001).
   (4) Pressurize the Green hydraulic system
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-863-001) or (Ref. AMM TASK 29-23-00-863-001).
   (5) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002).
   (6) On panel 400VU, set the landing gear control-lever (6GA) to the UP position.
   (7) Make sure that the NLG doors are fully open and the NLG is retracted and uplocked.
   (8) Depressurize the Green hydraulic system
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001) or (Ref. AMM TASK 29-23-00-864-001).
   (9) De-energize the aircraft electrical circuits
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-862-002).
   (10) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in position below zone 123.
Subtask 32-22-00-820-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
D. Adjustment of the Aft NLG Doors
F NLG - Aft Door Adjustment ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) If you do the adjustment of the NLG doors after removal/installation of the aft NLG door:
  • Do not adjust the replaced aft NLG door.
   (2) Manually close the aft NLG door and connect the rotating rod (5) to the door.
     (a) If necessary, loosen the nut (2) and turn the nut (4) to increase the length of the rotating rod (5).
   (3) Install the bolt (9), the washer (8) and the nut (7).
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL A COTTER PIN. EACH TIME YOU REMOVE A COTTER PIN DURING THE TASK, DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. A LOOSE COTTER PIN CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND.
   (4) TORQUE the nut (7) to between 0.33 and 0.27 m.daN (29.20 and 23.89 lbf.in ) T and safety it with the new AIPC 52-82-31-02-790 COTTER PIN (6).
   (5) Adjust the length of the rotating rod (5) as follows:
     (a) Loosen the nut (2).
     (b) Turn the nut (4) to make the door touch the rear stop.
     (c) Turn the nut (4) 180 deg. to tighten the rotating rod (5).
     (d) TORQUE the nut (2) to between 3 and 2.5 m.daN (22.12 and 18.44 lbf.ft )
T with the 98AMS172321000 ADAPTOR - WRENCH.
     (e) Safety the nut (2) with the new AIPC 52-82-31-02-830 LOCKWASHER (3).
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
     (f) Safety the nut (4) with the 14QFB1Wire-Locking Dia: 0.8 mm CRES Nickel Alloy -.
Subtask 32-22-00-820-051-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
D. Adjustment of the Aft NLG Doors
F NLG - Aft Door Adjustment ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) If you do the adjustment of the NLG doors after removal/installation of the aft NLG door:
  • Do not adjust the replaced aft NLG door.
   (2) Manually close and hold the aft NLG door until it touches the adjustable stop (12).
   (3) Adjust the length of the adjustable stop (12) to get mismatch A to between -2 mm (-0.08 in.) and +1 mm (0.04 in.):
     (a) Remove the lockwire from the nut (11) of the adjustable stop (12).
     (b) Loosen the nut (11).
     (c) Turn the adjustable stop (12).
     (d) Tighten and safety the nut (11) with the 14QFB1Wire-Locking Dia: 0.8 mm CRES Nickel Alloy -.
   (4) Connect the rotating rod (5).
     (a) If necessary, loosen the nut (2) and turn the nut (4) to increase or decrease the length of the rotating rod (5).
   (5) Install the bolt (9), washer (8) and nut (7).
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL A COTTER PIN. EACH TIME YOU REMOVE A COTTER PIN DURING THE TASK, DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. A LOOSE COTTER PIN CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND.
   (6) TORQUE the nut (7) to between 0.33 and 0.27 m.daN (29.20 and 23.89 lbf.in ) T and safety it with the new AIPC 52-82-31-02-790 COTTER PIN (6).
   (7) Adjust the length of the rotating rod (5) as follows:
     (a) Loosen the nut (2) .
     (b) Turn the nut (4) to make sure that the NLG door touches the adjustable stop (12).
     (c) Turn the nut (4) by 180 degrees to tighten the rotating rod (5).
     (d) TORQUE the nut (2) to between 3 and 2.5 m.daN (22.12 and 18.44 lbf.ft )
T with the 98AMS172321000 ADAPTOR - WRENCH.
     (e) Safety the nut (2) with the new AIPC 52-82-31-02-830 LOCKWASHER (3).
     (f) Safety the nut (4) with the 14QFB1Wire-Locking Dia: 0.8 mm CRES Nickel Alloy -.
Subtask 32-22-00-820-057-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
E. Adjustment of the Adjustable Stop of the Forward NLG doors
   (1) Manually close and hold the forward NLG door until it touches the adjustable stop (14). During this step, make sure that the forward NLG door does not touch the leg door roller.
   (2) Adjust the length of the adjustable stop (14) to get mismatch B to between -1 mm (-0.04 in.) and +1.4 mm (0.06 in.).
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
     (a) Remove and discard the lockwire from the nut (13).
     (b) Loosen the nut (13).
     (c) Turn the adjustable stop (14).
     (d) Tighten and safety the nut (13) with the 14QFB1Wire-Locking Dia: 0.8 mm CRES Nickel Alloy -.
Subtask 32-22-00-820-052-A
F. Remove the lockwashers (35), (29), (32) and (45).
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL A COTTER PIN. EACH TIME YOU REMOVE A COTTER PIN DURING THE TASK, DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. A LOOSE COTTER PIN CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND.
   (1) Remove and discard the cotter pin (25).
   (2) Remove the nut (24), the washer (23) and the screw (22).
   (3) Remove and discard the cotter pin (26).
   (4) Remove the nut (27), the washer (28), the bolt (40) and the washers (38).
   (5) Disconnect the rod ends (34) and (37) from the NLG leg.
   (6) Measure and record dimensions M and N to help the adjustment.
   (7) Loosen the nut (33), remove the rod end (34), remove and discard the lockwasher (32).
   (8) Loosen the nut (30), remove the nut (31), remove and discard the lockwasher (29).
   (9) Install the new AIPC 32-22-01-01-195 LOCKWASHER (29) or AIPC 32-22-81-01-230 LOCKWASHER (29) and tighten the nut (31).
   (10) Install the new
AIPC 32-22-01-01-100 LOCKWASHER (32) or AIPC 32-22-81-01-170 LOCKWASHER (32). Tighten the rod end (34) and adjust it approximately to dimension N recorded before.
   (11) Do not tighten and safety the nuts (30) and (33) at this step.
   (12) Loosen the nut (36), remove the rod end (37), remove and discard the lockwasher (35).
   (13) Install the new
AIPC 32-22-01-01-100 LOCKWASHER (35) or AIPC 32-22-81-01-170 LOCKWASHER (35). Tighten the rod end (37) and adjust it approximately to dimension M recorded before.
   (14) Do not tighten and safety the nut (36) at this step.
   (15) Connect the rod ends (34) and (37) to the NLG leg.
   (16) Make sure that the bush (39) is in position. Install the washers (38), the bolt (40), the washer (28) and the nut (27).
   (17) Install the screw (22), the washer (23) and the nut (24).
   (18) Do not tighten and safety the nuts (24) and (27) at this step.
   (19) Remove the nut (51) and the bolt (48).
   (20) Disconnect the rod end (47) from the NLG leg door.
   (21) Measure and record dimension L to help the adjustment.
   (22) Loosen the nut (46), remove the rod end (47), remove and discard the lockwasher (45).
   (23) Install the new
AIPC 32-22-01-01-100 LOCKWASHER (45) or AIPC 32-22-81-01-170 LOCKWASHER (45). Tighten the rod end (47) and adjust it approximately to dimension L recorded before.
   (24) Do not tighten and safety the nut (46) at this step.
   (25) Connect the rod end (47) to the leg door of the nose landing gear.
   (26) Make sure that the bushes (49) and (50) and the rod (43) are in position. Install the bolt (48) and the nut (51).
   (27) Do not tighten and safety the nut (51) at this step.
Subtask 32-22-00-820-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
G. Adjustment of the Lateral Clearance of the Leg Door
F NLG - Leg Fairing Adjustment ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
   (2) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearance U.
   (3) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
   (4) Adjust transversal clearance U to between 8.5 mm (0.3346 in.) and 11.5 mm (0.4528 in.) with the washer (38) as follows:
     (a) Remove the nut (27) and the washer (28).
     (b) Remove the bolt (40) and the washer (38).
     (c) Find the correct number of washer(s) (38) to get clearance U (washer thickness 0.5 mm (0.0197 in.)).
     (d) Install the AIPC 32-22-01-01-290 WASHERS (38), the bolt (40), the washer (28) and the nut (27). Do not fully tighten the nut (27) at this step.
   (5) Use the nut (31) to adjust the leg door until it is parallel to the forward NLG doors as follows:
     (a) Manually close one forward NLG door until it touches the forward stop.
     (b) Turn the nut (31) to adjust and make sure that the leg door is parallel to the forward NLG doors.
     (c) Manually open the forward NLG door.
     (d) Tighten the nut (33) but do not fully tighten it at this step.
   (6) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
   (7) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearances U, R and V. Make sure that:
  • Clearance U is between 8.5 mm (0.3346 in.) and 11.5 mm (0.4528 in.).
  • Clearance R is between 2.5 mm (0.0984 in.) and 5.5 mm (0.2165 in.).
  • Clearance V is between 5.5 mm (0.2165 in.) and 8.5 mm (0.3346 in.).
   (8) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
   (9) If necessary, do the adjustment of the lateral clearance again.

G. Adjustment of the Lateral Clearance of the Leg Door
F NLG - Leg Fairing Adjustment ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
   (2) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearance U.
   (3) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
   (4) Adjust transversal clearance U to between 0 mm (0.0000 in.) and 3 mm (0.1181 in.) with the washer (38) as follows:
     (a) Remove the nut (27) and the washer (28).
     (b) Remove the bolt (40) and the washer (38).
     (c) Find the correct number of washer(s) (38) to get clearance U (washer thickness 0.5 mm (0.0197 in.)).
     (d) Install the new AIPC 32-22-01-01-290 WASHERS (38) or the new AIPC 32-22-81-01-380 WASHERS (38), the bolt (40), the washer (28) and the nut (27). Do not fully tighten the nut (27) at this step.
   (5) Use the nut (31) to adjust the leg door until it is parallel to the forward NLG doors as follows:
     (a) Manually close one forward NLG door until it touches the forward stop.
     (b) Turn the nut (31) to adjust and make sure that the leg door is parallel to the forward NLG doors.
     (c) Manually open the forward NLG door.
     (d) Tighten the nut (33) but do not fully tighten it at this step.
   (6) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
   (7) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearances U, R and V. Make sure that:
  • Clearance U is between 0 mm (0.0000 in.) and 3 mm (0.1181 in.).
  • Clearance R is between 2.5 mm (0.0984 in.) and 5.5 mm (0.2165 in.).
  • Clearance V is between 5.5 mm (0.2165 in.) and 8.5 mm (0.3346 in.).
   (8) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
   (9) If necessary, do the adjustment of the lateral clearance again.

H. Adjustment of the Clearance Q between the Leg Door Roller and the Stop with the Rod Ends (34) and (37)
   (1) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
   (2) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearance Q.
   (3) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
   (4) Adjust clearance Q to between 0.83 mm (0.0327 in.) and 2.83 mm (0.1114 in.) as follows:
     (a) Remove the nut (24), the washer (23) and the screw (22).
     (b) Remove the nut (27), the washer (28), the bolt (40) and the washers (38).
     (c) Disconnect the rod ends (34) and (37) from the NLG leg.
     (d) Adjust symmetrically the rod ends (34) and (37) to get clearance Q between 0.83 mm (0.0327 in.) and 2.83 mm (0.1114 in.).
     (e) Tighten the nuts (33) and (36) but do not fully tighten and safety them at this step.
     (f) Connect the rod ends (34) and (37) to the NLG leg.
     (g) Make sure that the bush (39) is in position, install the washers (38), the bolt (40), the washer (28) and the nut (27).
     (h) Install the screw (22), the washer (23) and the nut (24).
     (i) Tighten the nuts (24) and (27) but do not fully tighten and safety them at this step.
     (j) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
     (k) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearance Q. Make sure that clearance Q is between 0.83 mm (0.0327 in.) and 2.83 mm (0.1114 in.).
     (l) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
     (m) If necessary, do the adjustment again.

I. Adjust the mismatch at rear of the leg door with the rod end (47).
   (1) Remove the nut (51) and the bolt (48).
   (2) Disconnect the rod end (47) from the leg door of the nose landing gear.
   (3) Adjust the rod end (47) to get the dimension X = 0 plus or minus 1 mm (0.0394 in.).
NOTE: One turn of the rod end (47) causes a 1 mm movement of the door.
   (4) Tighten the nut (46) but do not TORQUE and safety it at this time.
   (5) Connect the rod end (47) to the leg door of the nose landing gear.
   (6) Make sure that the bushes (49), (50) and the rod (43) are in position, install the bolt (48) and the nut (51).
   (7) Tighten the nut (51) but do not TORQUE and safety it at this time.
   (8) Make sure that the dimension X is equal to 0 plus or minus 1 mm (0.0394 in.).
   (9) Do again the adjustment if necessary.

   (2) Manually close the forward NLG doors until they touch the forward stops.
   (3) Use the GAGE - FEELER to measure clearances T and W. Make sure that:

  • Clearance W is between 7.5 mm (0.2953 in.) and 10.5 mm (0.4134 in.).
   (4) Manually open the forward NLG doors.
   (5) If necessary, do the adjustment again.

L. Extension of the NLG

   (2) Make sure that the travel range of the NLG is clear.
   (3) Pressurize the Green hydraulic system
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-863-001) or (Ref. AMM TASK 29-23-00-863-001).
   (4) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002).
   (5) On panel 400VU, put the landing gear control-lever (6GA) in the DOWN position.
   (6) On the aircraft, make sure that the NLG is extended and downlocked.
   (7) Depressurize the Green hydraulic system
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001) or (Ref. AMM TASK 29-23-00-864-001).
   (8) Install the safety device on the NLG (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-001).
