Wet-Motoring Check
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT ALL ENGINE OPERATING AREAS ARE AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. ALL RAMPS, TAXIWAYS, RUNWAYS AND OTHER OPERATING AREAS MUST BE VERY CLEAN TO PREVENT BAD DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE, AIRCRAFT AND PERSONS IN THE AREA.
WARNING:
DO NOT TRY TO STOP THE FAN FROM TURNING BY HAND. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO THE PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE LANDING GEAR GROUND SAFETIES AND THE WHEEL CHOCKS ARE IN POSITION. MOVEMENT OF THE AIRCRAFT CAN BE DANGEROUS.
WARNING:
DO NOT PERFORM WET-MOTORING IN A HANGAR OR IN A CLOSED AREA.
A LARGE QUANTITY OF HIGHLY FLAMMABLE FUEL VAPORS COME OUT FROM THE ENGINE DURING THIS PROCEDURE AND THERE IS A RISK OF FIRE.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE TRAVEL RANGES OF THE FLIGHT CONTROLS SURFACES ARE CLEAR. MOVEMENT OF FLIGHT CONTROLS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION:
- SEE THE APPLICABLE FIGURE FOR WIND LIMIT RESTRICTIONS WHEN THE ENGINE OPERATES.
- NATURAL WINDS AND IRREGULAR FORCES FROM SUDDEN GUSTS INCREASE THE DANGEROUS AREA.
- DO NOT GO ABOVE OPEN COWLING LIMITATIONS WHEN YOU DO THE TESTS.
- THE OPERATOR MUST FULLY KNOW ALL THE OPERATING LIMITS AND PROCEDURES BEFORE THE ENGINE OPERATES.
CAUTION:
DO NOT REPLACE AN IDLE LEAK CHECK BY A MOTORING TEST. YOU CANNOT DETECT POTENTIAL OIL LEAKS WITH A MOTORING TEST. IF YOU DO A MOTORING TEST INSTEAD OF AN IDLE LEAK CHECK, YOU CAN CAUSE AN ENGINE SHUTDOWN.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO HYDRAULIC GROUND POWER SUPPLY CONNECTED TO THE AIRCRAFT WHEN YOU DO THIS PROCEDURE. IF A HYDRAULIC GROUND POWER SUPPLY IS CONNECTED, THERE IS A RISK OF DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE PUMPS.
CAUTION:
DO A CHECK OF THE EGT BEFORE YOU DO THE WET MOTORING CHECK. THE EGT MUST BE LESS THAN 250 DEG.C TO DO THE WET-MOTORING CHECK. IF THE EGT IS MORE THAN 250 DEG.C, THE WET-MOTORING CHECK WILL ABORT.
1. Reason for the JobWet-motoring is necessary for maintenance checks where you must turn the engine and have fuel flow without ignition:
- Leak check of the fuel system
- To prime the engine fuel system after maintenance.

A. Prepare for the Test
(1) Obey the wind limitations and safety precautions during the engine ground operations (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-869-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-869-803).
(2) Make sure that the engine inlet and exhaust covers are removed. Make sure that these areas are clear of unwanted objects.
(3) Make a visual check of the temperature sensors, fan inlet and exhaust areas. If snow or ice has collected in the fan duct, make sure that the fan turns freely. Also, make sure that the engine inlet, inlet lip, fan, spinner and fan exhaust duct are clear of ice or snow. If the fan does not turn freely, you must melt the snow or ice with hot air before the engine operation.
(4) Look at the general condition of the fan spinner and fan blades, core exhaust nozzle, LPT and external surfaces of the cowls.

A. Wet-Motoring Check
Subtask 71-00-00-280-051-A CAUTION:
DO NOT OPERATE THE ENGINE IF THE FUEL INLET PRESSURE IS NOT POSITIVE. THE FUEL IS NECESSARY TO LUBRICATE THE ENGINE FUEL PUMP AND THE HMU AND THUS PREVENT DAMAGE.
CAUTION:
DURING THE WET-MOTORING PROCEDURE, THE "ENGINE FAIL" ECAM WARNING MESSAGE CAN COME INTO VIEW. IF IT DOES, IGNORE IT.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE ENG/MASTER 1(2) CONTROL SWITCH (ON THE PANEL 115VU) IS SET TO OFF BEFORE YOU START THE FUEL PUMPS.
(1) Do this test: | ACTION | RESULT |
|---|---|
1.On HYD/FUEL panel 40VU:
|
|
| 2.Make sure that the throttle control lever of engine 1(2) is in the idle stop position (zero on the graduated sector). | |
3.On ENG panel 115VU:
| On the lower ECAM Display Unit (DU):
|
4.On OVERHEAD CTL & IND panel 22VU:
NOTE: In cold weather conditions, important oil-pressure surges can occur. Obey the starter limits given below:
|
NOTE: Make sure that:
NOTE: While the engine does a motoring cycle, do a visual check for leaks at the fuel and oil system tubes and manifolds. |
5.When the N2 speed is between 15 and 20 percent, on ENG panel 115VU:
| On the upper ECAM DU:
|
6.After a fuel mist is shown on ENG panel 115VU:
| On the lower ECAM DU:
NOTE: After the reset of the EEC, the EEC will command the starter valve to open and the dry-motoring procedure is performed. |
| 7.Continue the dry-motoring of the engine for 60 seconds. | This will dry the fuel that can be in the combustor. |
8.After 60 seconds, on OVERHEAD CTL & IND panel 22VU:
| The ON legend of this pushbutton switch goes off. On the lower ECAM DU:

B. During engine coast-down, while the components continue to run, listen for unusual noise from these components.
Subtask 71-00-00-210-109-A NOTE: Gear noise and seal rubs are normal noise.
C. Make a check of the engine, fan frame and turbine for unusual roughness.
(1) Check the oil level and service as necessary Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-805
(a) If servicing is required, do servicing of the oil tank but fill the oil tank to the "MAX" mark minus 3 quarts.
(2) Make a check of the fuel-nozzle manifold-shrouds for leaks. No leaks are permitted.
(3) Fuel on the shrouds is an indication of a leak in the system.
(4) Make an inspection of the lubrication system lines, fittings and accessories for leaks (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-210-814).
5. Close-up(1) Check the oil level and service as necessary Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-805
