WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: WHEN THIS OPERATION IS DONE BY TWO PERSONS, MAKE SURE THAT THE MAXIMUM WIND SPEED IS NOT MORE THAN 40 KNOTS (74 KM/H). INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR IF THE WIND MOVES THE FAN COWL(S).
WARNING: IF YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON TO DO THIS PROCEDURE, MAKE SURE THAT:
  • THE GROUND IS DRY AND CLEAN, AND
  • THE MAXIMUM WIND SPEED IS NOT MORE THAN 10 KNOTS (19 KM/H).
IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS, INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DO NOT EXTEND THE SLATS WHEN THE FAN COWLS AND THE THRUST REVERSER COWLS ARE OPEN. IF YOU DO THIS, DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT CAN OCCUR.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 71-13-00-941-080-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) are in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On maintenance panel 50VU, on the ENG section:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is(are) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).
   (3) Make sure that the 98D27803000000 LOCKING TOOL-FLAP SLAT LEVER,INT. POSITION or the 98D27803500001 LOCKING TOOL ZERO POS is in position on the flap slat lever.

B. Get Access
   (1) Make sure that the INSPECTION CREEPER is in position below the engine at the fan cowl location.
4. Procedure
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT NO PERSONNEL STAYS BELOW THE FAN COWL DOOR WHILE YOU UNLOCK THE HOLD OPEN RODS. THERE IS A RISK OF INJURY TO THE PERSONNEL.
NOTE: It is possible to do this task with one person, but for convenience (wind gust, fan cowl door weight), two persons are recommended.
Subtask 71-13-00-410-086-A
A. Closing of the Fan Cowl Doors
   (1) Left fan cowl door:
     (a) Stow the rear HOR.
       1 Support the weight of the fan cowl door.
       2 Move the attachment lock on the rear HOR (7) to release it from the fitting (9) on the engine.
       3 Move the rear HOR (7) away from the engine case.
       4 Stow the rear HOR (7).
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU STOW THE REAR HOLD-OPEN ROD (HOR) CORRECTLY BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE FAN COWL DOOR. IF YOU DO NOT STOW IT CORRECTLY, INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
         a Stow the rear HOR (7) to the stowage bracket (8) located on the fan cowl door.
     (b) Unlock the front HOR.
       1 Move the front HOR sleeve to the forward position in order to disengage the locking sleeve on the front HOR from extension position.
       2 Working outside of the fan cowl zone, in the forward position, pull the fan cowl door to deactivate the secondary sleeve and then carefully lower the fan cowl door to the closed position.
     (c) Carefully lower the fan cowl door to the closed position.
     (d) Push on the fan cowl door to engage the spigots and the front upper and lower locators.
   (2) Right fan cowl door:
     (a) Do Steps A.(1)(a) thru A.(1)(d) to close the right fan cowl door.

B. Locking of the Fan Cowl Doors
CAUTION: DO NOT LEAVE THIS JOB AFTER JUST CLOSING THE FAN COWLS, CONTINUE ON TO SECURE THE LATCHES. IF YOU ARE CALLED AWAY PRIOR TO LATCHING, THEN EITHER RE-OPEN ONE COWL DOOR OR LATCH THE LATCHES BEFORE WALKING AWAY FROM THIS ENGINE.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU HANDLE THE LATCHES, DO NOT USE TOO MUCH FORCE. IF EXCESSIVE FORCE IS NECESSARY, DO AN INSPECTION OF THE FAN COWL DOORS.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE LATCH HOOKS ARE CORRECTLY ENGAGED IN THEIR KEEPERS. IF THEY ARE NOT, THERE IS A RISK THAT THE FAN COWL WILL NOT CLOSE CORRECTLY.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE LATCH HANDLES ARE FULLY LOCKED AND FLUSH WITH THE FAN COWL SURFACE. IF THEY ARE NOT, THERE IS A RISK THAT THE FAN COWL WILL NOT LOCK CLOSE CORRECTLY.
   (1) Get access to the latch zone.
   (2) Follow this sequence:
     (a) Pull the L2 latch handle (5) to close the L2 latch.
     (b) Pull the L3 latch handle (4) to close the L3 latch.
     (c) Pull the L1 latch handle (6) to close the L1 latch.
   (3) On the left fan cowl door, make sure that the flag is fully retracted inside its receptacle.

A. Put the aircraft back to its initial configuration.
   (1) Remove the INSPECTION CREEPER.
   (2) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
   (3) Remove the 98D27803000000 LOCKING TOOL-FLAP SLAT LEVER,INT. POSITION or the 98D27803500001 LOCKING TOOL ZERO POS from the flap slat lever.

B. Make a record in the aircraft logbook to tell that you closed the fan cowl doors.
