B. Installation of the Shock Absorber Assy
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE NLG SHOCK ABSORBER. THE NLG SHOCK ABSORBER IS VERY HEAVY (AROUND 60KG), AND A MINIMUM OF THREE PERSONS IS NECESSARY TO MOVE IT. IF THE NLG SHOCK ABSORBER FALLS, IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU INSTALL THE SHOCK ABSORBER, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ALIGN THE PISTON LUGS WITH THE SLOTS IN THE SHOCK STRUT BACKPLATE. THE SHOCK ABSORBER WILL THUS BE IN THE CORRECT POSITION (THE WHEEL AXLE PERPENDICULAR TO THE AIRCRAFT CENTERLINE). AN INCORRECT INSTALLATION CAN CAUSE IMPORTANT DAMAGE TO THE NLG.
CAUTION: BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE STRAPS AND THEIR PROTECTION, MAKE SURE THAT THE PARTS ARE CLEAN AND DRY. THIS IS TO PREVENT ABRASIVE EFFECTS ON THE PAINT.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU INSTALL THE STRAPS, MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A BLISTER PACK BETWEEN EACH STRAP AND THE PART. THIS IS TO PREVENT DAMAGE OR CHAFFING ON THE PAINT.
   (1) If necessary, release the nitrogen pressure and fully compress the shock absorber (10).
   (2) Install the J47999 GUIDE CONE on the threaded part of the sliding tube.
   (3) Make sure that the bush (9) is in position on the shock absorber (10).
   (4) Slowly engage the shock absorber (10) in the shock strut (7). Be careful not to cause damage to the friction pads (11) when the shock absorber (10) goes near the upper self-aligning bearing.
   (5) Push the scraper (14) in its housing.
   (6) Lift the shock absorber (10) to align the lugs of the cylinder with the slots in the shock-strut backplate (8).
   (7) Hold the shock absorber.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU INSTALL THE STRAP BETWEEN THE HYDRAULIC PIPE AND THE STEERING ACTUATOR, AND NOT ON TOP OF THE PIPE. THIS IS TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE PIPE.
     (a) Put a 1500 mm (59.0552 in.) STRAP-RATCHET between the towing bar (42) and the steering actuator (41) as near as possible of the barrel to hold the shock absorber (10). Hang moderately the strap.
NOTE: Put the strap near the barrel as much as possible to prevent side loads to be transmitted onto the steering actuator.
   (8) Remove the J47999 GUIDE CONE from the threaded part of the sliding tube.
     (a) Measure the length of the thread (15) from the top of the bush (9) to the end of the thread (15). When the length is between 18 mm (0.71 in.) and 20 mm (0.79 in.), the shock absorber (10) is correctly installed in the shock strut (7).
   (9) Install the nut (6) to attach the shock absorber (10) and the upper support.
   (10) Use the mini-hoist to lower the NLG leg until the NLG leg is downlocked.
