D. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Maintenance
Subtask 78-31-03-010-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL WARNING:
YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
(1) Make sure that you did the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805). E. Get Access to the TRAS Locking Actuator
(1) Make sure that the lower translating sleeve access panels are removed (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-34-000-802) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-64-000-802).

4. Procedure(1) Make sure that the lower translating sleeve access panels are removed (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-34-000-802) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-64-000-802).

WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
Subtask 78-31-03-420-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL A. Installation of the TRAS Locking Actuator
(2) Extend the locking actuator (1).
(b) Turn the locking actuator (1) manual lock drive to the unlocked position.
(c) Install the 636-3000-28GSE TR ACT. PRIM. LCK PIN in the locking actuator (1) through the manual lock drive to hold the manual lock drive in position.
(d) Extend the locking actuator
(e) Install the COVER - PROTECTION back on the locking actuator (1).
(3) Put the actuator seal (16) on the locking actuator (1).
(a) Move the actuator seal (16) to the base of the locking actuator (1).
(b) Make sure that the metal plate of the seal touches the actuator seal backing plate.
(4) Put the locking actuator (1) in position on the thrust reverser.
(a) Carefully put the locking actuator (1) through the TRAS fitting.
(b) Turn the locking actuator (1) approximately 90 degrees until the locking actuator (1) rod end can fit through the cascade ring bumper.
(c) Turn the locking actuator (1) back 90 degrees when the locking actuator (1) rod end is through the cascade ring bumper.
(d) Put the locking actuator (1) in position as follows:
(5) Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the two gimbal pins (11).
(6) Have one person push the locking actuator (1) against the TRAS fitting and compress the actuator seal (16). Have the second person install the gimbal pins (11) into the TRAS fitting and locking actuator (1).
(7) Safety the gimbal pins (11) with two gimbal pin retainers (10), four bolts (8) and the four washers (9).
(8) TORQUE the bolts (8) .

(9) Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the shank and threads of the bolt (2).
(10) Attach the locking actuator (1) to the translating sleeve fitting with the bolt (2) and bushing (3).
(11) TORQUE the bolt (2) to between 420 and 370 lbf.in (4.75 and 4.18 m.daN )
.
(12) Attach the grounding strap (14) to the locking actuator (1).
(a) Clean the surface where the grounding strap (14) attaches to the locking actuator (1) with a clean lint-free cotton cloth (Material No.PU1-0001) andPU2-0001 alcohol, isopropyl .
(b) Remove thePU2-0001 alcohol, isopropyl from the surface with a clean lint-free cotton cloth (Material No.PU1-0001) before it dries.
(c) Attach the grounding strap (14) to the locking feedback actuator (1) with the bolt (15) and washers (12) and (13).
(d) TORQUE the bolt (15) to between 35 and 31.5 lbf.in (0.40 and 0.36 m.daN )
.
(e) Measure the resistance between the grounding strap (14) lug and the lower torque box with an OHMMETER MULTIRANGE. Make sure that the resistance is 0.0100 ohms or less.
(f) If the resistance is more than 0.0100 ohms, remove the bolt (15) and washers (12) and (13) and do steps 4.A.(12)(a) thru 4.A.(12)(e) again.
(13) Remove the COVER - PROTECTION from the locking actuator (1), Manual Drive Unit (MDU), stow tube, return tube, track lock return tube and track lock valve supply tube.
(14) Connect the track lock return tube and track lock valve supply tube to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-50-400-801).
(15) Connect the stow tube and the return tube to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-50-400-801).
(16) If you removed the clamps and hardware on the hydraulic tubes, install the clamps and hardware back on the hydraulic tubes and torque box (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-50-400-801).
(17) Connect the flexible drive shaft to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-400-801).
(18) If you removed the clamps, clamp assemblies and hardware on deploy tube, install the clamps, clamp assemblies and hardware back on the deploy tube and torque box (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-400-801).
(19) Attach the MDU to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-05-400-801).
(20) Connect the TRAS monitoring harness to the locking actuator (1).
(b) For the left locking actuator, connect the left TRAS monitoring harnesses (4034KS-A) and (4042KS-A) to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-61-400-811).
(c) For the right locking actuator, connect the right TRAS monitoring harnesses (4035KS-A) and (4043KS-A) to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-61-400-812).
(21) Retraction of the translating sleeve
(22) If one or both the locking actuator (1) and locking feedback actuator do not lock when you retract the translating sleeve, do as follows:
(a) Remove the flexible drive shaft (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-000-801).
(b) For the locking feedback actuator, do as follows:
2 Remove the DRIVE 0.2 IN - SQUARE from the locking feedback actuator.
(c) For the locking actuator (1), do as follows:
1 Turn the MDU lever to the unlocked position.
2 Put the DRIVE 3/8 IN - SQUARE in the MDU square drive engagement.
3 Turn the MDU and retract the locking actuator (1) to the locked position.
5 Rotate the MDU lever to the locked position.
(d) Install the flexible drive shaft (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-400-801).
5. Close-upNOTE: These procedures are for the left TRAS locking actuator. The right side is opposite.
(1) Removal of the protection covers CAUTION:
REMOVE THE PROTECTION COVERS FROM THE OPENINGS AS NECESSARY TO PREVENT ENGINE DAMAGE.
(a) Make sure that you remove all the necessary COVER - PROTECTION to prevent damage to the engine. (2) Extend the locking actuator (1).
CAUTION:
REMOVE THE PROTECTION COVERS FROM THE ACTUATOR BEFORE YOU MANUALLY EXTEND IT. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, THE ACTUATOR CAN OPERATE INCORRECTLY AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
(a) Remove the protection covers from the locking actuator (1). (b) Turn the locking actuator (1) manual lock drive to the unlocked position.
(c) Install the 636-3000-28GSE TR ACT. PRIM. LCK PIN in the locking actuator (1) through the manual lock drive to hold the manual lock drive in position.
(d) Extend the locking actuator
CAUTION:
DO NOT APPLY A TORQUE OF MORE THAN 70 LBF-IN (0.79 m.daN) WHEN YOU ADJUST THE ACTUATOR. TOO MUCH TORQUE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ACTUATOR.
1 Carefully extend the locking actuator (1) to the length that you recorded when you removed the locking actuator (1). Use the DRIVE 0.2 IN - SQUARE and the WRENCH - TORQUE. (e) Install the COVER - PROTECTION back on the locking actuator (1).
(3) Put the actuator seal (16) on the locking actuator (1).
(a) Move the actuator seal (16) to the base of the locking actuator (1).
(b) Make sure that the metal plate of the seal touches the actuator seal backing plate.
(4) Put the locking actuator (1) in position on the thrust reverser.
(a) Carefully put the locking actuator (1) through the TRAS fitting.
(b) Turn the locking actuator (1) approximately 90 degrees until the locking actuator (1) rod end can fit through the cascade ring bumper.
(c) Turn the locking actuator (1) back 90 degrees when the locking actuator (1) rod end is through the cascade ring bumper.
(d) Put the locking actuator (1) in position as follows:
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE ACTUATOR ROD END ALIGNS WITH THE TRANSLATING SLEEVE ACTUATOR FITTING. DO NOT USE FORCE TO PUT THE ACTUATOR ROD END INTO POSITION. IF YOU DO NOT OBETY THIS INSTRUCTION, DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
1 Carefully move the locking actuator (1) aft until the locking actuator (1) rod end aligns with the translating sleeve actuator fitting. (5) Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the two gimbal pins (11).
(6) Have one person push the locking actuator (1) against the TRAS fitting and compress the actuator seal (16). Have the second person install the gimbal pins (11) into the TRAS fitting and locking actuator (1).
(7) Safety the gimbal pins (11) with two gimbal pin retainers (10), four bolts (8) and the four washers (9).
(8) TORQUE the bolts (8) .
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT YOU APPLY THE CORRECT TORQUE RANGE ON THE BOLTS. AN INCORRECT TORQUE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ACTUATOR AND/OR CAUSE THE ACTUATOR TO OPERATE INCORRECTLY.
(a) TORQUE the bolts (8) to between 90 and 81 lbf.in (1.02 and 0.92 m.daN ) 
(9) Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the shank and threads of the bolt (2).
(10) Attach the locking actuator (1) to the translating sleeve fitting with the bolt (2) and bushing (3).
(11) TORQUE the bolt (2) to between 420 and 370 lbf.in (4.75 and 4.18 m.daN )
. (12) Attach the grounding strap (14) to the locking actuator (1).
(a) Clean the surface where the grounding strap (14) attaches to the locking actuator (1) with a clean lint-free cotton cloth (Material No.PU1-0001) and
(b) Remove the
(c) Attach the grounding strap (14) to the locking feedback actuator (1) with the bolt (15) and washers (12) and (13).
(d) TORQUE the bolt (15) to between 35 and 31.5 lbf.in (0.40 and 0.36 m.daN )
. (e) Measure the resistance between the grounding strap (14) lug and the lower torque box with an OHMMETER MULTIRANGE. Make sure that the resistance is 0.0100 ohms or less.
(f) If the resistance is more than 0.0100 ohms, remove the bolt (15) and washers (12) and (13) and do steps 4.A.(12)(a) thru 4.A.(12)(e) again.
(13) Remove the COVER - PROTECTION from the locking actuator (1), Manual Drive Unit (MDU), stow tube, return tube, track lock return tube and track lock valve supply tube.
(14) Connect the track lock return tube and track lock valve supply tube to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-50-400-801).
(15) Connect the stow tube and the return tube to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-50-400-801).
(16) If you removed the clamps and hardware on the hydraulic tubes, install the clamps and hardware back on the hydraulic tubes and torque box (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-50-400-801).
(17) Connect the flexible drive shaft to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-400-801).
(18) If you removed the clamps, clamp assemblies and hardware on deploy tube, install the clamps, clamp assemblies and hardware back on the deploy tube and torque box (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-400-801).
(19) Attach the MDU to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-05-400-801).
(20) Connect the TRAS monitoring harness to the locking actuator (1).
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR IS CLEAN BEFORE YOU CONNECT IT. DIRTY ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS CAN CAUSE THRUST REVERSER PROBLEMS.
CAUTION:
USE PLIERS THAT HAVE TEFLON JAWS TO TIGHTEN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. DO NOT USE PLIERS THAT HAVE METAL JAWS. METAL JAWS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS.
(a) Remove the COVER - PROTECTION from TRAS monitoring harness connectors. (b) For the left locking actuator, connect the left TRAS monitoring harnesses (4034KS-A) and (4042KS-A) to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-61-400-811).
(c) For the right locking actuator, connect the right TRAS monitoring harnesses (4035KS-A) and (4043KS-A) to the locking actuator (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-61-400-812).
(21) Retraction of the translating sleeve
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT BOTH THE LOCKING ACTUATOR AND LOCKING FEEDBACK ACTUATOR LOCK WHEN YOU RETRACT THE TRANSLATING SLEEVE. IF ONE OR BOTH ACTUATORS DO NOT LOCK, THE ACTUATION SYSTEM IS NOT CORRECTLY SYNCHRONIZED.
(a) Manually retract the left translating sleeve (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-00-860-803). (22) If one or both the locking actuator (1) and locking feedback actuator do not lock when you retract the translating sleeve, do as follows:
(a) Remove the flexible drive shaft (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-000-801).
(b) For the locking feedback actuator, do as follows:
CAUTION:
DO NOT APPLY A TORQUE OF MORE THAN 70 LBF-IN (0.79 m.daN) WHEN YOU ADJUST THE ACTUATOR. TOO MUCH TORQUE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ACTUATOR.
1 Retract the locking feedback actuator to the locked position. Use the DRIVE 0.2 IN - SQUARE and the WRENCH - TORQUE. 2 Remove the DRIVE 0.2 IN - SQUARE from the locking feedback actuator.
(c) For the locking actuator (1), do as follows:
1 Turn the MDU lever to the unlocked position.
2 Put the DRIVE 3/8 IN - SQUARE in the MDU square drive engagement.
3 Turn the MDU and retract the locking actuator (1) to the locked position.
NOTE: Turn the MDU on the left thrust reverser half clockwise to retract the translating sleeve. Turn the manual drive unit on the right thrust reverser half counterclockwise to retract the translating sleeve.
4 Remove the DRIVE 3/8 IN - SQUARE from the MDU. 5 Rotate the MDU lever to the locked position.
(d) Install the flexible drive shaft (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-07-400-801).
