WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE GROUND SAFETY-LOCKS ARE IN POSITION ON THE LANDING GEAR. THIS WILL PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT OF THE LANDING GEAR, AND THUS POSSIBLE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT.

NOTE: Do this procedure when the steering angle is more than 95 degrees. This can include towbar and towbarless towing operations.

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the landing gears (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-001).

B. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) On panel 400VU, make sure that the landing-gear control lever is in the DOWN position.
   (2) On panel 110VU, make sure that the free-fall control handle is in the usual position.
   (3) On the nose gear leg, on the electrical box (5GC), make sure that the towing lever is in the towing position (disengaged position).
   (4) Lift the aircraft at the forward jacking point (Ref. AMM TASK 07-11-00-581-003).
   (5) Make sure that the Green hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001).
   (6) Release the remaining pressure from the servo-control (6GC) (Ref. AMM TASK 32-51-51-000-001).
   (7) Make sure that the electrical circuits are de-energized (Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-862-002).

C. Get Access
   (1) Open the NLG doors and install the safety devices (Ref. AMM TASK 32-22-00-010-001).
   (2) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to close the NLG doors.
   (3) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.

CAUTION: FOR THE RACK TEETH INSPECTION, DO NOT TURN THE ROTATING TUBE TOO MUCH TO PREVENT RACK DISENGAGEMENT. THE RACK CYLINDER RE-INSTALLATION IS NOT AN EASY PROCEDURE.

Examine the proximity sensors and their electrical harnesses for impact damage (such as breaks).

Examine the steering system:







(1) Examine the steering actuator body for damaged paint and deformation.
X






(2) Measure the diameter of the FWD and rear steering actuator bodies. Do the measurement at the end of the steering actuator bodies:
  • Make sure that the diameter is not more than 88.3 mm (3.476 in.).
X






(3) Remove the torque-link center hinge (Ref. AMM TASK 32-21-27-000-002).
X






(4) Do a special detailed inspection of the torque-link center hinge-pin (Ref. AMM TASK 32-21-00-200-803).
X






If you find damage on item A. or B.:
  • Contact Airbus for more instructions.

(5) Manually move the upper torque link to turn the rotating tube. Make sure that the rotating tube turns freely.
X






(6) Remove the NLG steering actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 32-51-42-000-001):
X






(a) Examine the steering piston seals, the cylinders and the piston attachment. Make sure that there are no cracks or damaged paint.

(b) Manually move the upper torque link to turn the rotating tube and and see the cylinder rack teeth. Do an inspection of the teeth for deformation damage.
NOTE: To examine all the rack teeth, it is necessary to turn the rotating tube to one side and then the other side.

(c) If you find damage on item (5) or (6)(a) or (6)(b):

X





(7) Install the torque-link center hinge (Ref. AMM TASK 32-21-27-400-002).
X






(8) Install the NLG steering actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 32-51-42-400-001).

   (2) Lower the aircraft (Ref. AMM TASK 07-11-00-586-001).

   (4) Remove the access platform(s).
