WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE CORRECT FIRE FIGHTING/EXTINGUISHING EQUIPMENT AND THE APPROVED PERSONNEL ARE AVAILABLE. THE APU FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO EXTINGUISH A FIRE IF ACCESS DOORS 315AL AND 316AR ARE OPEN OR REMOVED.

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002).
   (2) On the overhead panel 25VU, make sure that the APU MASTER SW pushbutton switch is released (ON legend is off).
   (3) On the APU section of overhead panel 25VU, put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the APU.
   (4) Make sure that the hydraulic systems are depressurized
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001).

C. Get Access
WARNING: BEFORE YOU START WORK, YOU MUST PUT ON A SAFETY HARNESS AND ATTACH IT TO THE ACCESS PLATFORM. WITHOUT A SAFETY HARNESS, YOU CAN FALL. THIS CAN KILL YOU OR CAUSE YOU INJURY.
   (1) Put on and attach the HARNESS, SAFETY before you start work in the work area.
   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position below the APU access doors 315AL and 316AR.
   (3) Open APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-010-001).
   (4) Set the light switch 11LJ to the ON position.
4. Procedure
WARNING: USE THE CORRECT PERSONAL PROTECTION. OIL CAN HAVE ADDITIVE CALLED TRICRESYL PHOSPHATE IN IT. THIS CHEMICAL IS AN ASPHYXIANT, IT IS POISONOUS AND CAN BE ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. USE CARE WHEN ENGINE OIL IS DRAINED. HOT OIL CAN POSSIBLY CAUSE BAD BURNS.
Subtask 49-91-42-240-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Inspection of the Magnetic Drain Plug
   (1) Remove the magnetic element (1) from the drain plug (2).
   (2) Do an inspection of the magnetic element (1) under a LIGHT SOURCE - WHITE for metal particles.
     (a) A small quantity of metal particles not larger than 1.50 mm (0.0591 in.) in any dimension is permitted. In this case install the magnetic element (1) in the drain plug (2).
     (b) If you find a large quantity of metal particles smaller than 1.50 mm (0.0591 in.), do the following steps:
CAUTION: DO NOT CLEAN THE OIL FILTER ELEMENTS. YOU MUST DISCARD THEM AND INSTALL NEW FILTER ELEMENTS. IF YOU CLEAN THE OIL FILTER ELEMENTS, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THEM. THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE APU.
       1 Clean the magnetic element (1) in the Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Petroleum Based - (Material No.08BBB1) .
       2 Dry the magnetic element (1) with a clean Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
       3 Replace the oil filters (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-41-920-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-41-920-001).
       4 Install the magnetic element (1) in the drain plug (2).
       5 Do the servicing to change the oil in the APU oil reservoir (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-005).
       6 APU operation:
         a Remove the safety clip(s) and the tag(s) and close this(these) circuit breaker(s):

         b Start the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-00-00-860-005) and operate it for 15 minutes.
         c Do the APU shutdown procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 49-00-00-860-006).
         d Open, safety and tag this(these) circuit breaker(s):

       7 Remove the magnetic element (1) from the drain plug (2).
       8 Remove the oil filters for inspection (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-41-920-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-91-41-920-002).
       9 Do an inspection of the magnetic element (1) and the oil filter elements under a source of white light for metal particles.
         a If you find any metal particles on the magnetic element or the oil filter elements:
         b If you do not find any metal particles on the magnetic element (1) or in the oil filter elements :
NOTE: Make entries in the logbook:
  • that a check for metal particles was made, and what the result of the check was.
     (c) If you find metal particles larger than 1.50 mm (0.0591 in.):
       1 Install the magnetic element (1) in the drain plug (2).
       2 Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-003) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-003).

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Close APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).
   (3) Remove the access platform(s).
   (4) Remove the safety harness.
