CAUTION:
DO NOT START THE APU WITH ACCESS DOORS 315AL AND 316AR OPEN/REMOVED.
THE APU FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO EXTINGUISH A FIRE IF THE ACCESS DOORS 315AL AND 316AR ARE OPEN/REMOVED.

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
(1) Energize the ground service network
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-42-00-861-001).
(2) On overhead panel 25VU, make sure that the APU MASTER SW pushbutton switch is released (the ON legend is off).
(3) On APU section of overhead panel 25VU, make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to start the APU.
(4) Make sure that the hydraulic systems are depressurized
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001).

C. Get Access
(2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position below APU access doors 315AL and 316AR.
(3) Open APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-010-001).
(4) Set the light switch 11LJ to the ON position.
4. ProcedureWARNING:
BEFORE YOU START WORK, YOU MUST PUT ON A SAFETY HARNESS AND ATTACH IT TO THE ACCESS PLATFORM. WITHOUT A SAFETY HARNESS, YOU CAN FALL. THIS CAN KILL YOU OR CAUSE YOU INJURY.
(1) Put on and attach the HARNESS, SAFETY before you start work in the work area.(2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position below APU access doors 315AL and 316AR.
(3) Open APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-010-001).
(4) Set the light switch 11LJ to the ON position.
Subtask 49-91-42-210-052-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Removal and Inspection of the Metal Chip Detector
(1) Push the metal chip detector (1) and turn it to remove it from the gearbox.
(2) Remove and discard the two packings (2) from the metal chip detector (1).
(3) Make sure that there are no signs of metal particles in the metal chip detector (1).
(4) If you find a small quantity of unwanted material on the metal chip detector (1):
(a) Use white light.
(b) Carefully examine the shape and the color of the particles collected on the magnetic end of the metal chip detector (1):
1 If you find small thin slivers of different colors, but not of silver color, and/or thin strands of dark material made of smaller particles:
a Clean and install the metal chip detector (1).
b Make entries in the aircraft logbook and the APU logbook to show that you did a check of the metal chip detector (1). Record also the check results.
2 If you find bright silver flakes, chips or larger pieces of metal with machined surfaces and are of regular shape:
a Clean the metal chip detector (1) and install it.
b Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-004) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-004).
(5) If you find a moderate quantity of unwanted material on the metal chip detector:
(a) Use white light.
(b) Carefully examine the shape and the color of the particles collected on the magnetic end of the metal chip detector (1):
1 If you find bright silver flakes, chips or larger pieces of metal with machined surfaces and are of regular shape:
a Clean the metal chip detector (1) and install it.
b Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-004) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-004).
2 If the particles are made of dark material, not of a silver color and of different dimensions and shapes:
a Change the oil in the APU oil reservoir (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-008).
b Clean the metal chip detector (1) and install it.
c Do a visual inspection of the oil filters:
f Do a check of the metal chip detectors (1) for unwanted material:
(a) Install the metal chip detector (1).
(b) Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-004) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-004).

- If the lube-pump filter has contamination, replace the cooling fan (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-51-000-002) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-52-51-400-002).
- If the generator-scavenge pump filter has contamination, replace the APU generator (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 24-23-51-400-001).
- Make sure that the APU generator operates during the operation of the APU.
f Do a check of the metal chip detectors (1) for unwanted material:
- If you find unwanted material on the magnetic end of the metal chip detector (1):
.. Install the metal chip detector (1).
.. Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-004) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-004). - If you do not find unwanted material on the magnetic end of the metal chip detector (1):
.. Clean the metal chip detector (1) and install it.
.. Make an entry in the logbook to show that you did the check of the metal chip detector (1). Record also the result of the check.
(a) Install the metal chip detector (1).
(b) Replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-004) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-004).
B. Installation of the Metal Chip Detector
(1) Install the new two AIPC 49-91-42-70-010 PACKINGS (2) or AIPC 49-91-84-33-010 PACKINGS (2) on the metal chip detector (1).
(2) Install the metal chip detector (1) in the gearbox.
(3) Close the APU access doors (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).
Subtask 49-91-42-865-067-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) Install the new two AIPC 49-91-42-70-010 PACKINGS (2) or AIPC 49-91-84-33-010 PACKINGS (2) on the metal chip detector (1).
(2) Install the metal chip detector (1) in the gearbox.
(3) Close the APU access doors (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).
C. Remove the safety clip(s) and the tag(s) and close this(these) circuit breaker(s):

CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE APU AIR INTAKE IS FULLY CLOSED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SHUTDOWN OF THE APU WAS CORRECT. IF THE APU AIR INTAKE IS NOT FULLY CLOSED, OPERATE THE APU AT NO-LOAD FOR 5 MINUTES THEN DO A NORMAL SHUTDOWN.
D. Start and Operate the APU NOTE: Oil level inspection and servicing should be checked not less than 15 minutes after the last shutdown. Do not re-service before the APU is operated again.
(1) Start the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-00-00-860-008). (2) Allow the APU to run for 5 minutes.
(3) Shutdown the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-00-00-860-009).
(4) Open the APU access doors 315AL/316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-010-001).
(5) Check the drain plug for leaks.
NOTE: No leakage is permitted.
(6) Do a visual check of the oil quantity in the APU. Add oil if the oil level is on or less than the ADD mark on the sight glass (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-007). Subtask 49-91-42-410-056-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Close Access
(1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
(2) Set the light switch 11LJ to the OFF position.
(3) Close APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).
(4) Remove the access platform(s).
(5) Remove the 98L12003001000 HARNESS,SAFETY.
Subtask 49-91-42-860-062-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
(2) Set the light switch 11LJ to the OFF position.
(3) Close APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).

(3) De-energize the ground service network
