WARNING:
USE THE CORRECT PERSONAL PROTECTION.
OIL CAN HAVE ADDITIVE CALLED TRICRESYL PHOSPHATE IN IT. THIS CHEMICAL IS AN ASPHYXIANT, IT IS POISONOUS AND CAN BE ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN.
USE CARE WHEN ENGINE OIL IS DRAINED. HOT OIL CAN POSSIBLY CAUSE BAD BURNS.
CAUTION:
MONITOR THE OIL CONSUMPTION OF THE APU VERY CAREFULLY. IF THE OIL CONSUMPTION IS TOO HIGH, OR IF IT INCREASES SUDDENLY, THERE IS A RISK OF DAMAGE TO THE APU.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE APU AIR INTAKE IS FULLY CLOSED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SHUTDOWN OF THE APU WAS CORRECT. IF THE APU AIR INTAKE IS NOT FULLY CLOSED, OPERATE THE APU AT NO-LOAD FOR 5 MINUTES THEN DO A NORMAL SHUTDOWN.
CAUTION:
DO A CHECK OF THE OIL LEVEL A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES AFTER THE LAST SHUTDOWN OF THE APU.
DO NOT DO A NEW SERVICING BEFORE THE APU IS OPERATED AGAIN.
IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, OIL OVERFILLING AND OIL ODORS/FUMES IN THE CABIN CAN OCCUR.
A. Do a check of the Oil Level and Replenish (Gravity Fill Procedure) NOTE: If on the ECAM, on the APU page LOW OIL LEVEL message is shown, but you did an inspection of the drain mast and found no leaks:
- Airbus recommends that you do the oil servicing before ten hours of APU operation.
NOTE: For Extended Range Operations for Two-Engine Aeroplanes (ETOPS), refer to the special instructions in the operators' ETOPS manual on APU oil servicing when the LOW OIL LEVEL message is shown.
(1) Use a LIGHT SOURCE - WHITE to do a check of the oil level on the sight glass. Refer to the black marks to know the oil level. (a) If the oil level is at the FULL mark on the sight glass, do not add oil to the APU.
(b) If oil consumption is high, do the troubleshooting procedure TSM 49-00-81-810-867.
(2) Put the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL) in position below the APU filling port to collect oil overflow.
(3) Make sure that the filler cap is clean.
(a) If it is dirty, clean the filler cap with a Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
(4) Open the filler cap.
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DRAIN THE ENGINE OIL AND/OR LOOSEN THE FILLER CAP. HOT OIL CAN SPILL PAST THE FILLER CAP WHEN THE OIL LEVEL IS ABOVE THE 'ADD' RANGE (MARKED ON THE SIGHT GLASS).
(a) Pull the lock and slowly open the filler cap to release any pressure from the APU. (5) Add the oil.
WARNING:
PUT THE OIL INTO THE GRAVITY-FILL PORT SLOWLY. THIS WILL PREVENT A BLOW-BACK OF HOT OIL WHICH CAN BURN YOU.
CAUTION:
DO NOT FILL THE GEARBOX ABOVE THE FULL MARK ON THE SIGHT GLASS. DURING APU OPERATION THE OIL EXPANDS WHICH COULD CREATE AN OVER-FILLED CONDITION RESULTING IN LEAKAGE AND POSSIBLE OIL SMELL IN THE CABIN.
(a) Make sure that the oil can(s) is (are) clean and the oil does not contain unwanted materials. (b) Slowly add the oil until the level in the APU is at the FULL mark.
1 If you want to do a brand oil change:
- do the top-off procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-008), or
- do the flush procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-008).
- do the flush procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 49-90-00-600-008).
(7) Make sure that the filler cap area is clean.
(a) If it is dirty, clean the filler cap area with a Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
(8) Remove the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL).
(9) If oil fell on the APU, the air intake duct and/or the adjacent area, clean them with a Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
(10) If applicable, make an entry of the oil that you added in the APU oil reservoir, in the applicable logbook.
