Idle Leak Check
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT ALL ENGINE OPERATING AREAS ARE AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. ALL RAMPS, TAXIWAYS, RUNWAYS AND OTHER OPERATING AREAS MUST BE VERY CLEAN TO PREVENT BAD DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE, AIRCRAFT AND PERSONS IN THE AREA.
WARNING:
DO NOT TRY TO STOP THE FAN FROM TURNING BY HAND. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO THE PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE LANDING GEAR GROUND SAFETIES AND THE WHEEL CHOCKS ARE IN POSITION. MOVEMENT OF THE AIRCRAFT CAN BE DANGEROUS.
WARNING:
DO NOT DO AN ENGINE RUN-UP WITH THE THRUST REVERSER COWLS OPEN. IF YOU OPERATE THE ENGINE AT MORE THAN IDLE, THE FAN COWLS MUST NOT BE OPEN. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
WARNING:
- ENGINE OPERATION MUST NOT EXCEED MINIMUM IDLE WHEN PERSONNEL ARE IN ENTRY/EXIT CORRIDOR.
- POSITIVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT AND PERSONNEL IN ENTRY EXIT CORRIDOR IS NECESSARY.
- INLET AND EXHAUST HAZARD AREAS MUST BE STRICTLY OBSERVED BY PERSONNEL IN ENTRY/EXIT CORRIDOR.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT:
- THE PASSENGER DOORS ARE CLOSED AND THE PASSENGER LOADING STAIRS ARE REMOVED WHEN AT LEAST ONE ENGINE IS OPERATED ABOVE IDLE POWER.
- THE CARGO DOORS ARE CLOSED AND CARGO LOADING EQUIPMENT IS REMOVED WHEN:
CAUTION:
- SEE THE APPLICABLE FIGURE FOR WIND LIMIT RESTRICTIONS WHEN THE ENGINE OPERATES.
1. Reason for the Job- NATURAL WINDS AND IRREGULAR FORCES FROM SUDDEN GUSTS INCREASE THE DANGEROUS AREA.
- DO NOT GO ABOVE OPEN COWLING LIMITATIONS WHEN YOU DO THE TESTS.
- THE OPERATOR MUST FULLY KNOW ALL THE OPERATING LIMITS AND PROCEDURES BEFORE THE ENGINE OPERATES.
The purpose of the idle leak check is to make sure that the engine operates correctly at idle, to check for external leaks, and to check for leaks at the fan and core drain masts.

D. Prepare for the Test
(1) Obey the wind limitations and safety precautions during the engine ground operations (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-869-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-869-803).
(2) Make sure that the engine inlet and exhaust covers are removed. Make sure that these areas are clear of any foreign objects.
(3) Do a visual check of the temperature sensors, fan inlet and exhaust areas. If snow or ice has collected in the fan duct, make sure that the fan turns freely. Also, make sure that the engine inlet, inlet lip, fan, spinner and fan exhaust duct are clear of ice or snow. If the fan does not turn freely, you must make the snow or ice melt with HOT AIR BLOWER MAX OPERATING 55DEG C (131 DEG F) before the engine operation.
(4) If operating in Cold weather, refer to applicable (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-831).
(5) Do a visual check of at the general condition of the fan spinner and fan blades, core exhaust nozzle, LPT and external surfaces of the cowls.
(6) Do a check of the oil level and replenish, if necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-805).
(7) Do a check of the drain ports for fuel, oil and hydraulic leaks (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-790-805).

A. Idle Leak Check
(1) Let the engine become stable at minimum idle for three minutes and make sure that the parameters below are in the limits:
(a) N2 stable at approximately 67 percent N2
(c) The EGT is stable and within the operational limits
(3) Open the Thrust Reverser Cowls Doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-806).
(4) Do a visual inspection of the fuel lines, pneumatic lines, fittings and accessories for leaks. For oil leakage, check for staining or wetting from or on the oil system tubes, hoses and components (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-210-814).
(5) Do a check of the 2 drain masts for leaks (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-790-805).
5. Close-up(1) Let the engine become stable at minimum idle for three minutes and make sure that the parameters below are in the limits:
(a) N2 stable at approximately 67 percent N2
NOTE: Idle N2 may vary slightly due to the ambient temperature, engine bleed, altitude and other factors.
(b) Oil pressure (c) The EGT is stable and within the operational limits
NOTE: The idle EGT may vary due to the engine condition, ambient temperature, altitude and other factors. The engine condition and bleed configuration can cause EGT differences between the engines. If the N1, N2 and fuel flow are satisfactory and stable at minimum idle, it is not unusual to see EGT differences between the engines.
(2) Stop the engine (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-829).
