General Visual Inspection of Pressure Seals


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

Refer to the MPD TASK: 783200-L7
GENERAL VISUAL INSPECTION OF PRESSURE SEALS.
This procedure gives the instructions to do a General Visual Inspection (GVI) of the translating cowl (transcowl) pressure seals.
PRE SPOL BD-TR-18006
Each transcowl half has three pressure seal segments: upper, middle, lower, two pressure block seals, one lower aft seal and one upper aft seal.

Each transcowl half has seven pressure seal segments, two pressure block seals, one lower aft seal and one upper aft seal.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 78-32-48-941-056-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch, and
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) in position.

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Nacelle Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-807).

D. Get Access
   (1) Manually deploy the translating cowl (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-010-801).
   (2) Remove cascades No. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 on each side of the thrust reverser (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-43-000-806).
4. Procedure
Subtask 78-32-48-210-053-A
A. General Visual Inspection (GVI) of the Transcowl Pressure Seals
   (1) Examine the transcowl pressure seals for the types of damage that follow. Use a LIGHT SOURCE - WHITE. For areas that you cannot see directly, you must use an MIRROR - INSPECTION.
  • Radial cuts, splits and tears
  • Circumferential cuts, splits and tears
  • Nicks that do not go through the full thickness of the seal wall
  • Holes (such as punctures or pin holes) that extend through the full thickness of the seal wall
  • Missing seal
  • Loose or missing seal C-channel retainer
  • Signs of erosion, abrasion or wear on the outer surface of the seal.
   (2) Damaged or missing segment:
CAUTION: DO NOT DISPATCH THE AIRCRAFT IF A SEGMENT IS MISSING OR DAMAGED.
     (a) Replace a damaged or missing segment immediately (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-48-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-48-400-802).
5. Close-up

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Install cascades No. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 on each side of the thrust reverser (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-43-400-806).
   (3) Manually stow the translating cowl (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-410-801).

B. Do the reactivation of the thrust reverser after nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-440-807).
