Manually Stow the Translating Cowl [CFML]
TASK 78-32-50-410-801-A
Manually Stow the Translating Cowl
This task gives the instructions to manually stow the translating cowl (transcowl).
Opening and closing of the transcowl are maintenance procedures done while the aircraft is on the ground. This TASK moves the transcowl manually, not with the thrust reverser actuation system used during automatic operation.
When the transcowl is open, it is in the aft position which is known as the deployed position. When the transcowl is closed, it is in the forward position which is known as the stowed position.

Manually Stow the Translating Cowl
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER COWL DOORS ARE CLOSED BEFORE YOU DO A THRUST REVERSER CYCLING TEST. IF THE THRUST REVERSER COWL DOORS ARE OPEN, DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
ZONE: 400

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Maintenance
Subtask 78-32-50-040-055-A Subtask 78-32-50-720-051-A WARNING:
YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
(1) Make sure that you did the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-807). E. Make sure that you did a check of the pressurization of the related hydraulic reservoir (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-720-001).
4. ProcedureNOTE: If the related hydraulic reservoir is pressurized, it is not necessary to do the bleed procedure after the manual stow operation. If the related hydraulic reservoir is not pressurized (or if you do not pressurize the related hydraulic reservoir), you must do the bleeding procedure after the manual stow operation.

(9) Manually stow the transcowl as follows:
(a) Put the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE 3/8 in. in the socket of the Manual Drive Unit (MDU). Make sure that the square drive of the speed wrench is fully engaged in the MDU.
(d) Put the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE in the other MDU and turn it. When the transcowl gets to the fully stowed position, the MDU clutch will dis-engage and a repetitive clicking will be heard.
(e) Remove the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE from the MDU.
(f) Visually check the position of the target at both upper actuators to confirm they are in locked position.
(10) Make the transcowl safe for maintenance as follows:
(b) When maintenance is complete, make sure the synchronized manual locking actuator (lower right actuator) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-43-440-802) is unlocked.
5. Close-upCAUTION:
DO NOT OPEN THE THRUST REVERSER WHEN THE TRANSLATING COWL IS DEPLOYED BY MORE THAN 10 INCHES (254 MM). DO NOT DEPLOY THE TRANSLATING COWL WHEN THE THRUST REVERSER IS OPEN. WHEN THE THRUST REVERSER IS OPEN IT CAN HIT THE WING IF THE TRANSLATING COWL IS MOVED TO THE DEPLOYED POSITION. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE THRUST REVERSER AND THE WING.
(1) Unlock the synchronized manual locking actuator (right lower actuator) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-43-440-802). (2) Put the INSPECTION CREEPER in position under the thrust reverser.
(3) Reactivate the tertiary lock (Ref. AMM TASK 78-37-00-440-803).
(4) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 1M (3 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position on either side of the engine.

NOTE: As an alternative, you can use a tool such as an electrical DRILL - HAND. Such a tool must not turn more than 400 rpm and must not apply more than a 0.5 m.daN (44.25 lbf.in) torque.
(b) Turn the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE until the transcowl moves to the fully forward (stowed) position, or to the specified distance. NOTE: For some maintenance procedures, it could be necessary to only move the transcowl a specified distance.
(c) Remove the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE from the MDU.
WARNING:
DO NOT DO MAINTENANCE WITH THE TRANSCOWL UNLOCKED. IF THE TRANSCOWL IS ACCIDENTALLY PUSHED WHEN THE TRANSCOWL IS UNLOCKED, THERE IS A RISK OF INJURY TO PERSONNEL.
(a) If you do maintenance with the transcowl not fully stowed, lock the synchronized manual locking actuator (lower right actuator) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-43-040-802). (b) When maintenance is complete, make sure the synchronized manual locking actuator (lower right actuator) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-43-440-802) is unlocked.
