Manually Deploy the Translating Cowl [CFML]
TASK 78-32-50-010-801-A
Manually Deploy the Translating Cowl
This task gives the instructions to manually deploy the translating cowl (transcowl).
Opening and closing of the transcowl are maintenance procedures done while the aircraft is on the ground. This TASK moves the transcowl manually, not with the trust reverser actuation system used during automatic operation.
When the transcowl is open, it is in the aft position which is known as the deployed position. When the transcowl is closed, it is in the forward position which is known as the stowed position.
PRE SPOL BD-TR-17014
Three people are necessary to manually deploy the transcowl without WAVE - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS.

Manually Deploy the Translating Cowl
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER COWL DOORS ARE CLOSED BEFORE YOU DO A THRUST REVERSER CYCLING TEST. IF THE THRUST REVERSER COWL DOORS ARE OPEN, DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
ZONE: 400

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Maintenance
Subtask 78-32-50-040-054-A Subtask 78-32-50-720-050-A WARNING:
YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
(1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-807). E. Do a check of the pressurization of the related hydraulic reservoir (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-720-001).
4. ProcedureNOTE: If the related hydraulic reservoir is pressurized, it is not necessary to do the bleed procedure after the manual stow operation. If the related hydraulic reservoir is not pressurized (or if you do not pressurize the related hydraulic reservoir), you must do the bleed procedure after the manual stow operation.

A. Manually Deploy the Translating Cowl (transcowl)
(1) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 1M (3 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position on either side of the engine.
(2) Unlock the primary locks on the two synchronized locking feedback actuators (the two upper actuators) as follows:
PRE SPOL BD-TR-17014 without 98N7830H025-000 WAVE - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS and POST SPOL BD-TR-17014 without 98N7830H027-000 PIN - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS
(a) Use a wrench to turn the yellow hex on the left upper actuator in the clockwise (unlock) direction. One mechanic must continue to hold the target of this actuator in the fully unlocked position.
END OF PRE SPOL BD-TR-17014 without 98N7830H025-000 WAVE - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS and POST SPOL BD-TR-17014 without 98N7830H027-000 PIN - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS

(e) Use a wrench to turn the yellow hex on the left upper actuator in the clockwise (unlock) direction, then install the 98N7830H027-000 PIN - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS to keep the target in unlock condition.
END OF POST SPOL BD-TR-17014 with 98N7830H027-000 PIN - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS
(3) Make sure that the lock on the synchronized manual locking actuator (the lower right actuator) is unlocked (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-43-440-802).
(4) Put the INSPECTION CREEPER in position under the thrust reverser. A third mechanic manually deploys the transcowl.
(5) Manually deploy the transcowl as follows:
(a) Put the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE 3/8 in. in the socket of one of the Manual Drive Units (MDUs). Make sure that the square drive of the speed wrench is fully engaged in the MDU.
PRE SPOL BD-TR-17014 without 98N7830H025-000 WAVE - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS and POST SPOL BD-TR-17014 without 98N7830H027-000 PIN - UNLOCKING TR UP. ACTUATORS
1 After the transcowl moves a minimum of 1 inch (25 mm) the two mechanics can release the hexes on the upper actuators.

(a) Use a wrench to turn the yellow hex on the left upper actuator in the clockwise (unlock) direction. One mechanic must continue to hold the target of this actuator in the fully unlocked position.
NOTE: Torque applied on hex shall not exceed 105 lbf.in (1.19 m.daN).
(b) Use a wrench to turn the yellow hex on the right upper actuator in the clockwise (unlock) direction. A second mechanic must continue to hold the target of this actuator in the fully unlocked position. NOTE: Torque applied on hex shall not exceed 105 lbf.in (1.19 m.daN).

NOTE: As an alternative, you can use a tool such as an electrical DRILL - HAND. Such a tool must not turn more than 400 rpm and must not apply more than a 0.5 m.daN (44.25 lbf.in) torque.
CAUTION:
DO NOT TRY TO DEPLOY THE TRANSCOWL WITH THE PRIMARY LOCKS NOT MANUALLY UNLOCKED ON THEIR MECHANICAL STOP DURING THE FIRST 1 INCH (25 MM) OF STROKE. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, THE PRIMARY LOCKS CAN FAIL IN AN ABNORMAL CONFIGURATION THAT IS NOT CORRECT FOR AIRCRAFT DISPATCH.
(b) Turn the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE until the transcowl moves to the fully aft (deployed) position, or to the specified distance. NOTE: For some maintenance procedures, it could be necessary to only move the transcowl a specified distance.
NOTE: When the transcowl gets to the fully deployed position, the MDU clutch will dis-engage and a repetitive clicking will be heard.

(d) Remove the WRENCH - SPEED, SQUARE DRIVE from the MDU.
(6) Make the transcowl safe for maintenance as follows:
WARNING:
DO NOT DO MAINTENANCE WITH THE TRANSCOWL UNLOCKED. IF THE TRANSCOWL IS ACCIDENTALLY PUSHED WHEN THE TRANSCOWL IS UNLOCKED, THERE IS A RISK OF INJURY TO PERSONNEL.
(a) If you will immediately stow the transcowl, it is not necessary to lock the synchronized manual locking actuator (lower right actuator). (b) If you will do maintenance with the transcowl not fully stowed, lock the synchronized manual locking actuator (right lower actuator) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-43-040-802).
(7) When the maintenance is completed, manually stow the transcowl (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-410-801).
