Installation of the Transcowl Pressure Seals


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

1. Reason for the Job
A. This procedure gives the instructions to install a translating cowl (transcowl) pressure seal.
B. Each transcowl half has several pressure seal segments. You can replace one segment and keep the other segments installed.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 78-32-48-941-058-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) are in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Nacelle Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Make sure that you did the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-807).

D. Get access
   (1) Make sure the transcowl is manually deployed approximately 10 in. (254.00 mm) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-010-801).
   (2) Make sure that you removed the cascades as necessary to get access to the forward seal segment(s) that you will install (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-43-000-806).
   (3) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
4. Procedure
Subtask 78-32-48-420-056-A
A. Installation of the Primary Slider Block Seal 12 o'clock and the Primary Slider Block Seal 6 o'clock
NOTE: This procedure is for the left primary slider block seal 12 o'clock and the left primary slider block seal 6 o'clock. It is also applicable to the right primary slider block seal 12 o'clock and the right primary slider block seal 6 o'clock.
   (1) Installation of the left primary slider block seal 12 o'clock (33):
     (a) Make rough the surface of the seal to be bonded with a SCOTCH BRITE PADS (Material No.CPNCL02086) .
     (b) Clean the left primary slider block seal 12 o'clock (33) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with the GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (c) Dry the left primary slider block seal 12 o'clock (33) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) before the solvent becomes gas.
     (d) Apply silicon adhesive sealant RTV106 (Material No.CPNCL00963) on the contact areas of the left primary slider block seal 12 o'clock (33) with the 12 o'clock beam and the forward frame.
     (e) Install the left primary slider block seal 12 o'clock (33) by inserting the block in the slider first.
     (f) Remove the unwanted silicon adhesive sealant RTV106 (Material No.CPNCL00963) .
   (2) Installation of the left primary slider block seal 6 o'clock (34):
     (a) Make rough the surface of the seal to be bonded with an SCOTCH BRITE PADS (Material No.CPNCL02086) .
     (b) Clean the left primary slider block seal 6 o'clock (34) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with the GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (c) Dry the left primary slider block seal 6 o'clock (34) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) before the solvent becomes gas.
     (d) Apply silicon adhesive sealant RTV106 (Material No.CPNCL00963) on the contact areas of the left primary slider block seal 6 o'clock (34) with the 6 o'clock beam and the forward frame.
     (e) Install the left primary slider block seal 6 o'clock (34) by inserting the block in the slider first.
     (f) Remove the unwanted silicon adhesive sealant RTV106 (Material No.CPNCL00963) .

B. Installation of Transcowl Leaf Seals
   (1) Install the left side transcowl aft upper seal (12) as follows:
     (a) Clean the left side transcowl aft upper seal (12) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with the GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (b) Apply PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.CPNCL02650) or PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.CPNCL02650) to the forward edge of the mating surface between the acoustic panel and the seal retainer.
     (c) Put the aft upper seal (12), aft seal retainer assembly (13), and upper seal retainer assembly (14) in position on the transcowl.
     (d) Install the aft upper seal (12) and aft seal retainer assembly (13) with three bolts (11).
     (e) Install the aft seal (12) and aft seal retainer assembly (14) with two bolts (8), one bolt (9), and one bolt (10).
     (f) TORQUE the bolts (11), bolts (8), bolts (9) and bolts (10) to between 0.23 and 0.18 m.daN (20.35 and 15.93 lbf.in ) T.
     (g) Apply PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.
CPNCL02650) or PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.CPNCL02650) to the forward edge of the mating surface between the acoustic panel and the seal retainer. Remove access material with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) .
     (h) Allow sealant to cure. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
       1 Do not stow the transcowl until the sealant is fully cured.
   (2) Install the left side transcowl aft lower seal (6) in the aft lower seal retainer (7) as follows:
     (a) Clean the left side transcowl aft lower seal (6) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with the GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (b) Align the two tabs (inboard and outboard) on the seal segment with the seal retainer.
     (c) Hold the new seal segment with your hands and push the segment into the C-channel of the seal retainer. The two tabs will engage with the two recesses in the C-channel. Adjust the ends of the seal segment to get the best fit into the transcowl. When you release the seal segment, the two tabs will expand to give a tight fit in two C-channel recesses. When the seal segment is correctly installed, the two tabs are compressed a small distance by the C-channel.
     (d) Apply a bead of 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) to the ends of the seal segment and transcowl. The sealant will make a bond between the seal segment and the transcowl. The information from the removal procedure will tell you where to apply the sealant. Make the outer surface of the sealant smooth. Remove access material with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) .
     (e) Let the sealant cure. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
       1 Do not stow the transcowl until the sealant is fully cured.
   (3) Install the right side transcowl aft upper seal (20) as follows:
     (a) Clean the right side transcowl aft upper seal (20) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with the GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (b) Apply PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.CPNCL02650) or PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.CPNCL02650) to the forward edge of the mating surface between the acoustic panel and the seal retainer.
     (c) Put the aft upper seal (20), aft upper seal retainer assembly (22), and upper seal retainer assembly (23) in position on the transcowl.
     (d) Install the aft upper seal (20) and upper seal retainer assembly (23) with three bolts (21).
     (e) Install the aft upper seal (20) and aft upper seal retainer assembly (23) with two bolts (17), one bolt (18), and one bolt (19).
     (f) TORQUE the bolts (21) bolts (17), bolts (18) and bolts (19) to between 0.23 and 0.18 m.daN (20.35 and 15.93 lbf.in ) T.
     (g) Apply PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.
CPNCL02650) or PR-1200 RTV PRIME COAT RED (Material No.CPNCL02650) to the forward edge of the mating surface between the acoustic panel and the seal retainers. Remove access material with LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) .
   (4) Install the right side transcowl aft lower seal (15) and (16) in the aft lower seal retainer (24) and (25) as follows:
     (a) Clean the right side transcowl aft lower seal (15) and (16) and the surface to be bonded with a LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with the GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (b) Align the two tabs (inboard and outboard) on the seal segment with the seal retainer.
     (c) Hold the new seal segment with your hands and push the segment into the C-channel of the seal retainer. The two tabs will engage with the two recesses in the C-channel. Adjust the ends of the seal segment to get the best fit into the transcowl. When you release the seal segment, the two tabs will expand to give a tight fit in two C-channel recesses. When the seal segment is correctly installed, the two tabs are compressed a small distance by the C-channel.
     (d) Put the tab at the forward end of the seal (16) into the open end of the seal (15).
     (e) Apply a bead of 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) to the ends of the seal segment (06-050) and transcowl. The sealant will make a bond between the seal segment and the transcowl. The information from the removal procedure will tell you where to apply the sealant. Make the outer surface of the sealant smooth.
     (f) Apply a bead of 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) to the splice joints of the seal segments. The sealant will make a bond between the seal segments. The information from the removal procedure will tell you where to apply the sealant. Make the outer surface of the sealant smooth.
     (g) Apply a bead of 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) between the seals and the transcowl at the corner near the splice joint. Make the outer surface of the sealant smooth. Remove the access material with LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) .
     (h) Let the sealant cure. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
       1 Do not stow the transcowl until the sealant is fully cured.

   (2) Reinstall the segment (1) of the transcowl leading edge pressure seal as follows:
NOTE: This task is given for the left translating-cowl pressure seal. It is applicable to the right translating-cowl pressure seal.
NOTE: This procedure is applicable to pressure seal segment (1). It is also applicable to the other pressure seal segments (3), (4), (26) thru (32).
     (a) Preparation of surface for bonding:
       1 Crevices, holes and other openings in the seal retainer C-Channel (2) and seal (1) shall be cleared of residue and other particulates an BLOWING EQUIPMENT - DRY AIR or wiped clean via LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) .
       2 Rub the contact surfaces of the pressure seal (1) and seal retainer C-channel (2) with a SCOTCH BRITE PADS (Material No.CPNCL02086) .
       3 Wipe clean seal retainers C-Channel (2), acoustic panel and seal (1) with GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) and allow to air dry for a minimum of 30 minutes. A two cloth method shall be used.
NOTE: Cleaned/prepared surfaces shall be dry, free of oil, grease and visible particulate contamination.
     (b) Application of adhesive sealant
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
       1 Apply one coat of the PR1200 Primer - Adhesion Promoter to seal foot bonding surfaces (seal retainer C-channel (2) and seal (1) only). Shake well before use. Apply with a BRUSH - NON METALLIC or LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) .
NOTE: Do not apply to upper and lower seal surfaces that mate with the acoustic panel bondment and do not apply to the acoustic panel.
NOTE: A sufficient coating layer shall be indicated by a light pink color on the treated surface
     (c) Allow PR1200 Primer - Adhesion Promoter to set at room temperature for 30 minutes.
NOTE: 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) must be applied within one hour after drying of PR1200 Primer - Adhesion Promoter.
     (d) Bond mating surface of the seal (1) to the seal retainer C-channel (2) along entire bottom surface using 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) .
       1 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) shall be applied in a thin, uniform coat (approximately 0.25 mm (0.01 in.)) on the seal retainer (2) only. masking tape shall be used to prevent sealant from bonding to surfaces adjacent to specified bonding areas.
       2 Applied 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) shall be free of bubbles and voids prior to part assembly.
       3 Parts shall be assembled within 30 minutes.
       4 Excess 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) squeeze out along the joint edge shall be removing with a clean LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
     (e) Bond mating surfaces of the upper and lower seals to the acoustic panel bondment and bond joints between seals using 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) .
       1 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) shall be applied in a thin, uniform coat (approximately 0.25 mm (0.01 in.)) on each surface to be bonded. masking tape shall be used to prevent 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) from bonding to surfaces adjacent to specified bonding areas.
       2 Applied 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) shall be free of bubbles and voids prior to part assembly.
       3 Parts shall be assembled within 30 minutes.
       4 Excess 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 ADHESIVE SEALANT-GRAY (Material No.CPNCL02653) squeeze out along the joint edge shall be removing with a clean LINT-FREE COTTON CLOTH (Material No.CPNCL02069) made moist with GENERAL CLEANING AGENT - MULTI PURPOSE (Material No.CPNCL02589) .
