A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU, make sure that a WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU, make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) is off. Make sure that a WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).
   (3) Make sure that the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE is in position.

A. Installation of the HMU
NOTE: HMUs that have fluorocarbon (Viton) external seals (SB 73-015) can leak fuel for a short time when they are below 0 deg.C (32.00 deg.F) (Modification 1 and 2) (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-790-002).
   (1) Lubricate the new O-rings with vaseline (Material No.CP5070) and install the new O-rings on the nipples and plugs as follows:
     (a) VBV open nipple (220) and new AIPC 73-21-10-01-270 O-RING (230).
     (b) RACSB nipple (410) and new
AIPC 73-21-10-01-190 O-RING (420) at the port marked RACCS.
NOTE: Only applicable for non /P engines.
     (c) TBV nipple (410) and new
AIPC 73-21-10-01-190 O-RING (420) at the port marked RACCS.
NOTE: Only applicable for /P and /3 engines.
     (d) VBV closed nipple (320) and a new
AIPC 73-21-10-01-250 O-RING (330).
     (e) PCR closed nipple (290) and a new
AIPC 73-21-10-01-290 O-RING (300).
     (f) HPTACC nipple (470) and a new

     (l) PB plug (130). TORQUE to between 80 and 70 lbf.in (0.90 and 0.79 m.daN )
T. Safety the PB plug with CP8001lockwire 0.032 in. (0.8 mm) dia. or CP8002lockwire 0.032 in. (0.8 mm) dia.
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
     (m) PS plug (150). TORQUE to between 42 and 38 lbf.in (0.47 and 0.43 m.daN )
T. Safety the PS plug with CP8001lockwire 0.032 in. (0.8 mm) dia. or CP8002lockwire 0.032 in. (0.8 mm) dia.
     (n) OVBD drain nipple (490). TORQUE to between 150 and 135 lbf.in (1.70 and 1.53 m.daN )

   (4) If the
856A1494 FIXTURE,HANDLING-HMU (856A1494G01) is not installed on the HMU, then install the 856A1494 FIXTURE,HANDLING-HMU (856A1494G01) on the HMU. Use four BOLT - 250-28UNF-2A X 0.50IN..
   (5) Remove the blanking cover from the HMU mounting pad on the fuel pump.
   (6) Lubricate the AIPC 73-21-10-01-040 GASKET (180) with engine oil (Material No.CP2442) and install on the HMU mounting pad studs.
NOTE: Make sure that the gasket (180) is serviceable (Ref. AMM TASK 70-21-00-918-002).
   (7) Align the splines:
CAUTION: HOLD THE HMU LEVEL DURING THE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION. MAKE SURE THAT THE WEIGHT OF THE HMU IS NOT AGAINST THE FUEL-PUMP DRIVE SHAFT AND THAT THE HMU DOES NOT HIT THE FUEL-PUMP MATING FLANGE. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, DAMAGE TO THE FUEL-PUMP DRIVE SHAFT, MATING FLANGE OR HMU CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DO NOT HOLD OR MOVE THE HYDROMECHANICAL UNIT BY THE TORQUE MOTORS. CHANGES TO THE CALIBRATION OF THE HYDROMECHANICAL UNIT CAN OCCUR.
     (a) Carefully align the splines on the drive shaft of the fuel pump with the internal splines of the HMU.
     (b) If the splines will not engage, do the following steps:
       1 Remove the handcranking drive cover from the core rotation pad on the accessory gear box (AGB), opposite the starter (Ref. AMM TASK 72-63-00-000-002).
       2 Install a square drive socket with a breaker bar into the handcranking drive pad. To turn the core engine clockwise (CW), the handcranking device must be turned counterclockwise (CCW).
   (8) When the splines of the fuel-pump drive shaft and the HMU can correctly engage, then carefully install the HMU. Make sure that the gasket is serviceable (Ref. AMM TASK 70-21-00-918-002).
   (9) Install the washer (200) and nuts (190) on the HMU mounting studs:
     (a) Use the 856A1469 WRENCH SET, RUN ON OFF - MEC FUEL PUMP NUTS (856A1469G01) to install the nuts that are difficult to reach.
     (b) TORQUE the nuts (190) to between 140 and 120 lbf.in (1.58 and 1.36 m.daN ) T. Use the 856A1336 ADAPTOR SET, TORQUE - MEC FASTENERS (856A1336G02) to torque the bolts.
   (10) Install the flex-hose on the nipples and torque the coupling nuts and unions as follows:
CAUTION: USE TWO WRENCHES TO REMOVE OR INSTALL THE TUBE COUPLING NUTS:
  • ONE WRENCH TO HOLD THE UNION, AND
  • ONE TO LOOSEN OR TIGHTEN THE COUPLING NUT.
THIS PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE PARTS.
     (a) VBV open hose (240) to nipple (220). TORQUE to between 550 and 450 lbf.in (6.22 and 5.09 m.daN ) T.
     (b) RACSB hose (400) to nipple (410) at the port marked RACCS. TORQUE to between 150 and 135 lbf.in (1.70 and 1.53 m.daN )

     (c) TBV hose (400) to nipple (410). TORQUE to between 150 and 135 lbf.in (1.70 and 1.53 m.daN )

   (11) Remove the
856A1494 FIXTURE,HANDLING-HMU (856A1494G01) from the HMU.
   (12) Remove the blanking covers from the open end of the return heater hose (530) and the IDG tube (540).
   (13) Connect the coupling nut connection of the servo heater return hose (530) at the servo fuel heater.
   (14) Lubricate the gasket (510) with engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
   (15) Install the gasket (510) between the return heater hose (530) and the servo port on the HMU.
NOTE: Make sure that the hose flange is properly inserted and centered into the hose flange retainer or the gasket will fail.
   (16) Install the return heater hose (530) on the HMU with bolts (520) and the washers (525). TORQUE the bolts (520) to between 53 and 47 lbf.in (0.60 and 0.53 m.daN ) T.
   (17) Torque the coupling nut of the servo heater return hose (530) at the servo fuel heater to between 770 and 650 lbf.in (8.70 and 7.35 m.daN )
T.
   (18) Lubricate the gasket (560) with engine oil (Material No.
CP2442) .
   (19) Install the gasket (560) between the IDG tube (540) and the IDG port of the HMU.
NOTE: Make sure that the hose flange is properly inserted and centered into the hose flange retainer or the gasket will fail.
   (20) Install the IDG tube (540) on the HMU with bolts (550). TORQUE to between 53 and 47 lbf.in (0.60 and 0.53 m.daN ) T.
   (21) Remove the blanking covers from the electrical cable connectors.
   (22) Connect the electrical connectors, Channel A (120) and Channel B (210), to the HMU. Tighten the connectors by hand plus one-eighth of a turn. If necessary, use PLIERS - NOSE, SOFT, LONG.
   (23) Connect the electrical connectors (170) to the latching solenoid. Tighten the connectors by hand plus one-eighth of a turn. If necessary, use PLIERS - NOSE, SOFT, LONG.

POST CFMI SB 73-0071

   (24) Install the downstream fuel filter (
Ref. AMM TASK 73-11-45-400-001).

   (25) Install the assembled fuel flow transmitter, fuel supply tube, inlet bracket, discharge bracket, and fuel supply hose on the HMU as follows:
NOTE: If you have disassembled the fuel flow transmitter when you removed the HMU, do the fuel flow transmitter assembly procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 73-31-10-400-002).
     (a) Untorque to finger-tight the four bolts (610) that attach the fuel supply tube and the inlet bracket to the fuel flow transmitter.
     (b) Untorque to finger-tight the four bolts (620) that attach the fuel supply hose and the discharge bracket to the fuel flow transmitter.
     (c) Remove the blanking plugs from the discharge port of the HMU and from the fuel supply tube.
     (d) Remove the blanking plugs from the fuel supply hose and the union (10) of the fuel injection supply tube.
     (e) Lubricate the new AIPC 73-31-10-01-040 GASKET (110) with vaseline (Material No.CP5070) . Install the gasket (110) on the discharge port of the HMU.
CAUTION: VISUALLY EXAMINE THE GASKET PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. REFER TO AMM 70-21-00-918-002 FOR GASKET AND SEAL MAINTENANCE PRACTICES. USE CAUTION WHEN INSTALLING THE GASKET TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE RUBBER SEAL.
     (f) Install the fuel supply tube with bolts (100) on the discharge port of the HMU. Tighten only to finger tight.
     (g) Connect the fuel supply hose at the union (10) of the fuel injection supply tube. Tighten the fuel supply hose with your hand.
     (h) Install the discharge bracket on the HMU with bolts (60) and washers (70). Tighten only to finger tight.
     (i) Install the inlet bracket on the HMU with bolts (80) and washers (90). Tighten only to finger tight.
     (j) TORQUE the following:
CAUTION: YOU MUST DO THE STEPS THAT FOLLOW IN SEQUENCE OR DAMAGE TO THE FUEL SUPPLY TUBE OR FUEL FLOW TRANSMITTER COULD OCCUR.
       1 Bolts (100) TORQUE to between 70 and 55 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.62 m.daN ) T.
CAUTION: USE CARE WHEN TIGHTENING THE BOLTS TO ENSURE PROPER AND EVENLY DISTRIBUTED TORQUE IS APPLIED. REFER TO AMM 70-23-00-911-002 FOR TIGHTENING PROCEDURES.
       2 Bolts (620) TORQUE to between 70 and 55 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.62 m.daN )

       3 Bolts (610) TORQUE to between 70 and 55 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.62 m.daN )

       4 Union (10) TORQUE to between 1100 and 900 lbf.in (12.43 and 10.17 m.daN )

   (26) Install the loop clamp (30) on the electrical connector (50). Attach the loop clamp (30) to the support bracket with the bolt (20) and the nut (40). TORQUE the bolt (20) to between 50 and 45 lbf.in (0.57 and 0.51 m.daN )
T.
   (27) Remove the blanking caps from the electrical connector (50) and the fuel flow transmitter.
   (28) Connect the electrical connector (50) to the fuel flow transmitter. Tighten the connector (50) with your hand plus one-eighth of a turn. If necessary, use PLIERS - NOSE, SOFT, LONG.
