4. Procedure
Subtask 29-22-00-220-053-A
A. Detailed Inspection of the RAT Blades made from Composite Material
   (1) Clean the RAT Blades:
     (a) Clean the RAT-blades with water and the Non Aqueous Cleaner-General - - (Material No.08BAA9) . Use a BRUSH - NON METALLIC.
     (b) Flush the RAT-blades with cold clean water.
   (2) Examine the turbine blade for damage, scratches, scores and corrosion:
     (a) Major damage (for example cracks, loose plating) is not permitted.
     (b) Minor damage (for example nicks, scratches, scores) and corrosion is permitted:
  • If you cannot see copper or composite material with a MAGNIFYING GLASS POWER 05X.
   (3) Shrinkage voids (crack-like indications) are permitted on the blend radius between the composite blade on each side and the titanium root fitting:
  • If you cannot see copper plating or composite substrate with a magnifying glass.
   (4) A small ring of copper is permitted in an area approximately 0.13 mm (0.0051 in.) wide in the transition zone:
  • Where is the end of the plating around the 38.9 mm (1.5315 in.) diameter flange on the blade root fitting.
   (5) The plating must be smooth, adherent and uniform in color.
     (a) Definition of the plating damage type:
  • Crack: Plating separation, slit in the plating
  • Buckling/Blisters: Raised plating, plating separation from the material
  • Pits/Porosity: Small pores with a size less than 0.5 mm (0.0197 in.) that possibly have copper if examined with MAGNIFYING GLASS POWER 05X
  • Nodules: Plating beads with a diameter of less than 1.0 MM (0.0394 IN.). You can find this usually at the tip of the blade. These nodules must not have exposed copper.

Pits / Porosity
(on the leading edge)
No pitting or porosity
is permitted at the
leading edge of a blade
Remove immediately
Pits / Porosity
(on the faces)
Pitting or porosity is
on the face of a blade
Conditional/scheduled
removal (See NOTE)
Nodules
This a bi-product of
the plating process
Satisfactory as it is,
no repair necessary
NOTE: If the pits/porosity are found on the faces of a blade during a RAT/blade inspection, the RAT can stay on the A/C:
  • Until the next scheduled RAT ground test
  • Or after an in flight deployment, whichever comes first.
This means that the RAT can stay on the A/C for 18 month maximum after this inspection.
   (6) It is permitted for the blade to have slight discoloration and superficial staining.
   (7) Minor surface irregularities from substrate imperfections are permitted.
   (8) You must remove corrosion stains with this procedure:
     (a) Make the scotch brite pads Abrasive-- Scotch Brite Pads - (Material No.14FAB1) (grade 'very fine') moist with the Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Isopropyl Alcohol - (Material No.08BBD1) .
     (b) Rub the corrosion lightly with the scotch brite pads until the stains are removed.
     (c) Flush the surface with clean cold water.
   (9) If the damage is not in the limits replace the RAT (Ref. AMM TASK 29-22-51-000-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 29-22-51-400-010).
5. Close-up
