Visual Inspection of the Variable Stator Vane (VSV) System


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

1. Reason for the Job
This procedure covers visual inspection of all external High Pressure Compressor (HPC) variable geometry hardware for both the Inlet Guides Vanes (IGVs) and all four stages of Variable Stator Vanes (VSVs).

3. Job Set-up

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch, and
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-809).

A. Visual Inspection of the Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) Variable Stator Vane (VSV) Systems
NOTE: If there is distress on a vane actuating arm, or if it is assembled incorrectly and causes vane scheduling errors more than four degrees, a special inspection/disposition of the compressor rotor blades is necessary.
NOTE: The use of the BORESCOPE SET equipment is permitted to facilitate hardware the inspection of the variable stator hardware.
   (1) Do an inspection of the areas that follow:
     (a) If an IGV or a VSV is found to be off schedule (e.g. because of a bent vane actuating arm), refer to this task (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-920-805).

1.The forward compressor stator case for:


  • Cracks
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the case (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Nicks, pits, scores and scratches.
Any number, any length up to 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) in depth after the removal of the high metal
Do the Hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
2.The IGV and the VSV actuation rings for:


  • Cracks in the actuating ring
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the actuating ring (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Distortion, bends, twists or a broken ring
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the actuating ring (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Nicks, dents and scratches in all the areas of the actuating rings
Any amount up to 0.01 in. (0.25 mm) in depth after the removal of the high metal
Do the Hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
  • Damaged or broken actuating arm bushings
The bushing body is not damaged and gives a 360-degree support to the actuating arm pin.
If the bushing body is not serviceable, remove the engine to replace the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Missing bushings on the IGV
One missing bushing permitted.
1) If two bushings spaced more than 60 degrees apart are missing: Remove the engine to replace the bushings within five flight cycles or 30 hours, whichever occurs first (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
2) Two missing bushings spaced less than 60 degrees apart, or three or more missing bushings are not permitted. Remove the engine to replace the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Missing bushings on VSV stage 1
Two missing bushings are permitted.
1) If three bushings are missing:

2) Four or more missing bushings are not permitted. Remove the engine to replace the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Missing bushings on VSV stages 2 thru 4
Three missing bushings per stage permitted.
1) If four bushings per stage are missing, repair within five flight cycles or 30 hours, whichever occurs first. Do this task: remove the engine to replace the actuating ring flanged bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).

2) Five or more missing bushings in each stage are not permitted. Do this task: remove the engine to replace the actuating ring flanged bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Missing or broken bushing legs
Two missing or broken bushing legs are permitted.
If three legs are broken, remove the engine to replace the actuating ring flanged bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Cracked or distorted ring spacer
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the actuating ring spacer (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Wear on the ring spacer buttons
0.01 in. (0.25 mm) minimum at Dimension E
Remove the engine to replace the actuating ring spacer (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Looseness on the ring spacer nuts
Not serviceable
Tighten actuation ring spacer nut again.
3.The actuation ring connector link for:


  • Cracks or broken on one or both sides
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the actuating ring connector link (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Nicks, dents and scratches in all the areas of the connector link
Any amount up to 0.01 in. (0.25 mm) in depth after the removal of the high metal
Do the hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
  • Bushings with broken or missing legs
Two damaged or broken bushing legs are permitted.
If three legs are broken, remove the engine to replace the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Missing or broken bushings.
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
4.The vane actuating arms, IGV and VSV stages 1 thru 4 for:


  • Broken, bent or cracked
Not serviceable
Broken or bent vane actuating arms can lead to off scheduling of IGV or VSV. If an IGV or VSV is found to be off schedule refer to this task (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-920-805). Remove the engine to replace the actuating arm (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Nicks, dents and scratches.
Area G is not serviceable.
Remove the engine to replace the actuating arm (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).

0.010 in. (0.25 mm) in Area H after the removal of the high metal.
Do the hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
5.The vane actuation system (the bellcrank assembly) for:


  • Cracks
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the bellcrank assembly (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Nicks, dents, scores and scratches on the IGV to stage-4 bellcranks or actuator link
Any amount, any length, 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) in depth after you remove the high metal.
Do the hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
  • Nicks, dents, scores and scratches on the bellcrank plates and the master rod.
Any amount, any length, 0.030 in. (0.76 mm) in depth after you remove the high metal.
Do the hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
6.The VSV actuator rod assembly for:


  • Cracks
Not serviceable
Replace the VSV actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-400-801) or (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-400-802).
  • Nicks, dents, scores and scratches.
Not serviceable
Replace the VSV actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-400-801) or (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 75-32-05-400-802).
7.The spherical bearings for:


  • Looseness of ball
0.002 in. (0.05 mm) max. circumferential movement
If more than 0.002 in. (0.05 mm), remove the engine to replace the spherical bearings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
8.The turnbuckles for:


  • Cracks
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the turnbuckles (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
  • Nicks, dents, scratches and scores
Any amount, any length, 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) in depth after you remove the high metal.
Do the hand blending procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 70-28-00-910-808).
  • A loose hexagonal nut.
Not serviceable.
Tighten the hexagonal nut again.
9.The vane spindle bushings for:


  • Missing bushings
Not serviceable
Remove the engine to replace the vane spindle bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803).
