Visual Inspection of the Ignition Exciter


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: BEFORE YOU START WORK ON THE IGNITION SYSTEM, MAKE SURE THAT THE IGNITION EXCITERS ARE DE-ENERGIZED FOR A MINIMUM OF FIVE MINUTES. ALSO DO NOT TOUCH THE ELECTRICAL CONTACTS. THE IGNITION SYSTEM VOLTAGE IS VERY HIGH, AND THE IGNITION EXCITERS CAN HAVE AN ELECTRICAL CHARGE EVEN WHEN NOT ENERGIZED. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS, INJURY CAN OCCUR.

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch, and
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-809).

A. Removal of the Exciter Box Shroud Lid
   (1) Remove the four bolts (3) that attach the exciter box shroud lid (2) to the exciter box shroud (1).

B. Disconnection of the Ignition Leads
CAUTION: DO NOT TWIST OR BEND THE IGNITION LEADS. IF YOU DO, DAMAGE TO THE LEADS CAN OCCUR.
   (1) Disconnect the ignition lead 2 (8) from the ignition exciter 2 (7).
   (2) Disconnect the ignition lead 1 (9) from the ignition exciter 1 (4).

C. Disconnection of the Electrical Harness Connectors
   (1) Disconnect the electrical harness (6) connector from the ignition exciter 2 (7) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804).
   (2) Disconnect the electrical harness (5) connector from the ignition exciter 1 (4) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804).

Not serviceable
Replace the ignition exciter (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-801) and/or (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-802).
  • Nicks, dents and scratches
Any number 0.030 in. (0.76 mm) deep
Replace the ignition exciter (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-801) and/or (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-802).
2.Electrical connectors for:


  • Thread damage
30 percent damage on one lead-in or 20 percent damage of two lead-in threads
Replace the ignition exciter (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-801), and/or (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-802).
  • Pin damage
Must mate freely with respective leads
Replace the ignition exciter (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-801) and/or (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-400-802).
  • Dirt inside the connector well
Not serviceable
Clean the connector well (Ref. AMM TASK 74-11-05-140-801).

E. Connection of the Electrical Harness Connectors
   (1) Connect the electrical harness (5) connector to the ignition exciter 1 (4) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804).
   (2) Connect the electrical harness (6) connector to the ignition exciter 2 (7) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804).

F. Connection of the Ignition Leads

   (2) Install the four bolts (3) that attach the exciter-box shroud lid (2) to exciter box shroud (1).
   (3) TORQUE the four bolts (3) to between 124 and 106 lbf.in (1.40 and 1.20 m.daN ) T.
