     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-809).
Subtask 72-00-00-010-313-A
D. Get Access

4. Procedure
CAUTION: DO NOT WATER-WASH AN ENGINE THAT HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO VOLCANIC ASH, DUST OR SAND. PARTICLES CAN ACCUMULATE IN THE COMBUSTOR LINERS, HPT NOZZLE VANES AND HPT BLADE COOLING PATHS. MATERIAL CAN ACCUMULATE IN THE HPC ROTOR SPOOLS AND CAUSE ROTOR IMBALANCE.
Subtask 72-00-00-280-087-A
A. Volcanic Ash, Dust or Sand Ingestion
   (1) The following requirements are subsequent to incidents of engines flown or operated in volcanic ash, dust or sand:
     (a) Visually check engine inlet and exhaust areas for evidence of damage or excessive erosion.
     (b) Borescope inspect the High Pressure Compressor (HPC), combustor and High Pressure Turbine (HPT) for evidence of the following (Ref. AMM TASK 72-30-00-290-801), (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-290-814), (Ref. AMM TASK 72-52-00-290-803) and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-40-00-290-801):
NOTE: Do an inspection of all stages of the HPC. The aft stages of the HPC will be most affected by erosion.
NOTE: Do an inspection of the combustor liners, HPT nozzle vanes and the HPT blades for erosion and accumulation of solidified material. Sufficient amounts of material accumulation on the HPT nozzle vanes can cause a reduced engine stall margin.
       1 Excessive erosion.
       2 Foreign Object Damage (FOD).
3 Build-up of ash, dust or sand deposits that have solidified on the combustor liners, HPT nozzle vanes and HPT blades.
a If material has solidified on the combustor liners HPT vanes or blades, contact CFM.
     (c) Oil System:
1 Replace scavenge oil filter (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-05-000-803) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-05-400-803).
2 Drain the oil (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-808) and (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-802).
3 Flush accessory and transfer gearbox (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-802).
4 Replace the oil (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-805).
     (d) Monitor engine operation to determine if a shift in performance parameters has occurred. If parameters are abnormal, do the related troubleshooting procedure (TSM Chapter 77).
     (e) Check for proper cooling of ignition leads.
     (f) Check condition of T12 temperature sensor (Ref. AMM TASK 73-21-15-210-801).
     (g) Check for fouling of Active Clearance Control (ACC) inlet louver.
   (2) The following requirements are subsequent to incidents of engines NOT flown or operated in volcanic ash, dust or sand, but have been exposed to volcanic ash, dust or sand on the ground:
     (a) Do an inspection of the engine inlet and exhaust for accumulation of ash, dust or sand particles.
1 Vacuum any particles from accessible areas of the inlet and exhaust.
2 Dry motor the engine for two minutes (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-700-805).
3 Borescope the HPC, combustor and HPT to inspect for ash, dust or sand (Ref. AMM TASK 72-52-00-290-803), (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-290-814), (Ref. AMM TASK 72-52-00-290-803) and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-40-00-290-801).
4 If loose material is still present in the engine flow path, dry motor the engine for two more minutes.
5 Repeat the borescope inspection and dry motoring until all material has been removed.
   (3) Do a one-time repeat borescope inspection at an A-check or 400-800 cycles to ensure HPT nozzle vane and HPT blade integrity.
