4. Procedure
Subtask 55-46-00-200-050-A
A. Inspection Procedure
NOTE: You can do the inspection of hinge fittings no. 1 thru 5 and no. 7 for wear without removal of the rudder.
It is also possible to do the measurement of the related items at hinge fitting no. 6 but the access on the installed rudder is very difficult.
AIRBUS recommends the removal of the rudder to do the inspection on hinge fitting no. 6.
   (1) Inspect the rudder attachment fittings for wear. Do this for one attachment fitting at a time.
     (a) For the rudder hinge bearings 1 thru 5 and 7:
NOTE: The tool PN 98D27208657042 from the 98D27208657000 DEVICE - FREEPLAY, RUDDER BEARING tool kit is applicable for the inspection of the bearings 1 thru 5 and 7.
1 Remove the nut, the washers, the hinge bolt and the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 27-21-41-000-001).
2 Do the inspection and the check of the dimensions of all the removed components at each attachment fitting (Ref. AMM TASK 27-21-41-200-001).
3 Install the tool PN 98D27208657042 from the 98D27208657000 DEVICE - FREEPLAY, RUDDER BEARING tool kit with the small diameter of the pin (2) from below the bearing.
NOTE: The pin (2) is installed above the bearing for the rudder hinge bearing 7.
NOTE: If you cannot install the 98D27208657000 DEVICE - FREEPLAY, RUDDER BEARING easily, make small movements with the rudder to install it.
4 Install the sleeve (1) above the pin (2). Tighten the sleeve (1) with your hand.
5 Use two hands to move the tool PN 98D27208657042 in the axial and radial directions. Do this to find bearing play or movement.
6 If there is no sign of bearing play or movement, remove the tool PN 98D27208657042.
7 Install the bushings, the hinge bolt, the washers and the nut (Ref. AMM TASK 27-21-41-400-001).
8 If you find bearing play or movement, replace the bearings or hinge-arm fittings SRM 553642.
9 Do the steps 1 thru 7 again for the applicable hinge arm bearings 1 thru 5 and 7.
     (b) For the rudder hinge bearing 6:
NOTE: The tool PN 98D27208657040 from the 98D27208657000 DEVICE - FREEPLAY, RUDDER BEARING tool kit is applicable for the inspection of the bearing 6.
1 Remove the rudder support strut (Ref. AMM TASK 55-36-48-000-001).
2 Remove the nut, the hinge pin, the washers and the bushings (Ref. AMM TASK 27-21-41-000-001).
3 Do the inspection and a check of the dimensions of the removed components (Ref. AMM TASK 27-21-41-200-001).
4 Install the tool PN 98D27208657040 from the 98D27208657000 DEVICE - FREEPLAY, RUDDER BEARING tool kit with the small diameter of the pin (3) from below the bearing.
5 Install the sleeve (4) above the pin (3). Tighten the sleeve (4) with your hand.
6 Use two hands to move the tool PN 98D27208657040 in the axial and radial directions. Do this to find bearing play or movement.
7 If there is no sign of bearing play or movement, remove the tool PN 98D27208657040.
8 Install the bushings, the washers, the hinge pin and the nut (Ref. AMM TASK 27-21-41-400-001).
9 If you find bearing play or movement, replace:
10 Install the rudder support strut (Ref. AMM TASK 55-36-48-400-001).
