3. Job Set-up
Subtask 51-78-00-860-050-A
A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Energize the ground service network
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-42-00-861-001).
   (2) If necessary, put a ACCESS PLATFORM 10M (33 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
WARNING: YOU MUST PUT ON AND ATTACH A SAFETY HARNESS BEFORE YOU START WORK:
  • ON THE THS OR IN THE REAR FUSELAGE
  • ON TOP OF THE WINGS OR PYLONS.
WITHOUT A SAFETY HARNESS, YOU CAN FALL. THIS CAN KILL YOU OR CAUSE YOU INJURY.
   (3) Put on and attach a SAFETY HARNESS before you start work in the work area.

B. Safety Precautions
   (1) De-energize the aircraft electrical circuits (Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-862-002).
   (2) Disconnect the electrical connector from the battery (Ref. AMM TASK 24-38-51-000-001).
   (3) Put the CAP-BLANKING on each disconnected electrical connector and receptacle.
   (4) Do not spray the cleaning solution directly on the electrical connection.

C. Get Access
   (1) Get access to the area(s) where you will do the inspection/check.

D. Removal of Components
   (1) Remove all the components necessary from the TPS inspection/check area.
   (2) Remove all the insulation blankets/material from the inspection/check area.
4. Procedure
Subtask 51-78-00-210-051-A
A. Inspection of the Temporary Protection System (TPS)
   (1) Inspect the area where the TPS is applied.
   (2) If the TPS is in the correct condition, a secondary layer of the same TPS can be applied over the first layer.
   (3) If the TPS is not in the correct condition, remove the TPS, clean the area and apply a new layer of the correct TPS type.
   (4) If the TPS has been removed for an inspection, apply a new layer of the TPS to the inspection area.
   (5) If the TPS layer is locally damaged, remove and apply a new layer of the TPS on the damaged areas.

B. Cleaning and/or Removal of the Temporary Protective System (TPS)
   (1) Does the MPD task make the removal of the TPS necessary.
     (a) If the TPS does not need to be removed, clean the inspection area with the Non Aqueous Cleaner-General - - (Material No.08BAA9) and a clean lint-free cloth Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
   (2) If it is necessary to remove the TPS, you must use a SCRAPER - NON METALLIC or VACUUM EQUIPMENT 0 TO 0.4 BAR (6 PSI) and BRUSH - NON METALLIC.
   (3) Apply the cleaning agents to the TPS:
     (a) Apply a layer of the Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Petroleum Based - (Material No.08BBB1) or Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Naphta based and Alcohol - (Material No.08BBC1) on the TPS with a BRUSH - NON METALLIC.
     (b) Remove the TPS with a SCRAPER - NON METALLIC.
     (c) If the TPS is a hard wax compound, apply a layer of Non Aqueous Cleaner-Wax and grease remover - - (Material No.08BDA1) with BRUSH - NON METALLIC.
     (d) The Non Aqueous Cleaner-Wax and grease remover - - (Material No.08BDA1) must soak into the TPS for a minimum of 20 minutes to make the compound soft.
     (e) Remove the TPS with a SCRAPER - NON METALLIC.
   (4) Flush the work area with warm water.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO THIS PROCEDURE. THE AIRFLOW CAN BE HOT AND HOT AIR CAN CAUSE BURNS.
   (5) Dry the area with a HOT AIR BLOWER OPERATING 40 DEG C(104 F).
   (6) Use the VACUUM EQUIPMENT 0 TO 0.4 BAR (6 PSI) to remove any loose particles from the work area.

  • IN DRAIN VALVES OR OTHER ORIFICES.
TEMPORARY PROTECTION ON OR IN THESE PARTS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY TEMPORARY PROTECTION SYSTEM (TPS) TYPE 3 ON THE MOVABLE COMPONENTS. USE ONLY TPS TYPE 1 GRADE 2. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, THE MECHANISMS WILL NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY.
C. Application of the Temporary Protection System (TPS)
NOTE: TPS application is necessary:
  • If you do cleaning with solvents, or alkaline cleaners, or high pressure water and solvent, or steam and solvent.
   (1) The three types of TPS are:
  • TPS type 1 grade 2 Corrosion Preventive Compound_Water Displacing Soft Film - (Material No.12ABC1) or TPS type 1 grade 3 Corrosion Preventive Compound-Water Displacing Hard Film - (Material No.12ABB1)
  • TPS type 2, Corrosion Preventive Compound-Heavy Duty Soft Film - (Material No.12ACC1) or Corrosion Preventive Compound-Heavy Duty Hard Film - (Material No.12ACB1)
  • TPS type 3, Corrosion Preventive Compound-Water Displacing & Heavy Duty Hard Film - (Material No.12ADB1) .
   (2) Make sure the correct TPS type is applied to the surface.
   (3) If TPS type 1 has been removed, apply the same TPS type 1 to the surface.
   (4) If TPS type 2 has been removed, apply the same TPS type 2 to the surface.
   (5) If TPS type 1 and TPS type 2 have been applied in an inspection area and are removed:
  • Apply the same TPS type 1 and type 2 or, as an alternative, apply the TPS type 3 to the inspection area.
   (6) If TPS type 3 has been removed, apply the same TPS type 3 to the surface.
  • As an alternative to TPS type 3 Corrosion Preventive Compound-Water Displacing & Heavy Duty Hard Film - (Material No.12ADB1) , apply TPS type 1 Corrosion Preventive Compound_Water Displacing Soft Film - (Material No.12ABC1) or Corrosion Preventive Compound-Water Displacing Hard Film - (Material No.12ABB1) , type 2 Corrosion Preventive Compound-Heavy Duty Soft Film - (Material No.12ACC1) or Corrosion Preventive Compound-Heavy Duty Hard Film - (Material No.12ACB1) to the inspection area.
NOTE: Corrosion prevention (Material No. 12ADB1) must not be used inside the
doors. Mechanisms are treated with Corrosion prevention (Material No. 12ABC1) only if necessary.
   (7) You must not apply TPS material to these items:
  • All oxygen components and circuits
  • All PTFE items
  • All ball, roller or swivel bearings
  • All disconnected electrical connectors, bonding pointsa and terminal strips
  • All connected unsealed electrical connectors, bonding points and terminal strips.
  • All disconnected pipe and fittings
  • All flap and slat transmission components
  • All fuel system components
  • All drain valves
  • Placards
  • All insulating blankets
  • Elastomer seals
  • Adhesive foam discs
  • Velcro strips
  • Flight control cables
  • As protection against hydraulic fluids
  • Areas where the operating temperature is constantly above 80 deg.C (176.00 deg.F).
     (a) Protect the above components with Adhesive Film Tape-Masking - - (Material No.05RDA1) and/or applicable plastic or paper sheets.
     (b) Make sure that all the drain valves have a cover to prevent any TPS or loose material to cause a blockage.
   (8) Apply the TPS in a continuous and smooth layer over the area with either of the following equipment:
  • Electrostatic-effect gun
  • Air gun
  • Low/high pressure pmp
  • Aerosol and capillary tube
  • BRUSH - BRISTLED, SOFT.
   (9) Remove the covers from the drain valves.
   (10) Make sure that there is no blockage of the drain valves and drain paths.
     (a) If you think there is a blockage, pour water into the drain valves and the drain paths to remove the blockage.
NOTE: No blockage remains when the water runs freely through the drain valves and the drain paths.

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Install the insulation blankets/material as necessary.
   (3) Install the components from the TPS inspection/check area as necessary.

B. Safety Precautions
   (1) Remove the CAP-BLANKING from each electrical connector and receptacle.
   (2) Connect the electrical connector to the battery (Ref. AMM TASK 24-38-51-400-001).
   (3) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits (Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002).

C. Put the aircraft back to its initial configuration.
   (1) Remove the ground support and maintenance equipment, the special and standard tools and all other items.
   (2) De-energize the ground service network
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-42-00-862-001).
