Inspection of the APU (131-9(A)) after a Fire in the APU Compartment


WARNING: AFTER THE DISCHARGE OF AN ETOPS FIRE EXTINGUISHING BOTTLE, DO NOT GO INTO THE RELATED COMPARTMENT. WAIT A MINIMUM OF 2 HOURS AFTER OPERATION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHING BOTTLE 2 TO MAKE SURE THAT THE AIR IS SAFE TO BREATHE. AFTER DISCHARGE, THE EXTINGUISHING AGENT CAN FLOW FROM THE FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM (FES) FOR NINETY MINUTES. KEEP A CARGO COMPARTMENT DOOR OPEN FOR A MINIMUM OF 30 MINUTES AFTER THE FLOW OF EXTINGUISHING AGENT STOPS. THIS WILL MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A GOOD FLOW OF AIR THROUGH THE CARGO COMPARTMENT. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS, THERE IS A RISK OF SUFFOCATION.

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Energize the ground service network
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-861-002).
   (2) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) on the panel 24VU to tell persons not to operate the APU.
   (3) Make sure that the hydraulic systems are depressurized
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001).

C. Get Access
   (1) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in position below the APU access doors 315AL and 316AR.
   (2) Open the APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-010-001) and safety them in the open position.
   (3) Set the light SW 11LJ to the ON position.
4. Procedure
Subtask 49-00-00-210-074-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. General Visual Inspection of the APU
   (1) Do an external inspection of the APU for the following indications:
     (a) Hot, combustion and remaining smoke.
     (b) Cracks on plastic, harness and clamps.
     (c) Metal discoloration damage.
     (d) Cracks on paint.
   (2) Do an internal inspection of the APU for the following indications:
     (a) Combustion and remaining smoke.
     (b) Delamination of the external and internal surface of the APU inlet plenum.
     (c) Too hot at gas-path walls of the inlet plenum.
   (3) If any of the described indication is found, replace the APU (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-000-004) and (Ref. AMM TASK 49-11-11-400-004).
   (4) Examine the APU Air Intake (Ref. AMM TASK 49-16-00-200-002).
   (5) Examine the APU Compartment (Ref. AMM TASK 49-81-00-200-017).
   (6) Examine the APU Mounts (Ref. AMM TASK 49-12-00-210-007).

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Set the LIGHT control switch 11LJ to OFF position.
   (3) Close the APU access doors 315AL and 316AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-00-410-001).
   (4) Remove the access platform(s).
