Sampling of the Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) Oil for Analysis

TASK 12-32-24-281-001-B
Sampling of the Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) Oil for Analysis

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: WEAR GOGGLES, INSULATED GLOVES AND OTHER PROTECTIVE CLOTHES. HOT OIL CAN BURN YOUR EYES AND SKIN. IF OIL TOUCHES YOUR EYES OR SKIN, GET MEDICAL AID.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE SOLVENTS THAT CONTAIN CHLORINE TO CLEAN THE EQUIPMENT (PUMP, HOSES, TANK AND FUNNEL) USED TO FILL THE IDG WITH OIL. CHLORINE CONTAMINATION OF THE OIL CAN CAUSE FAST DETERIORATION OF THE OIL AND WILL DECREASE THE LIFE OF THE IDG.
ZONE: 430
ZONE: 440
1. Reason for the Job
To find the cause of the oil contamination (skydrol, fuel, water, chlorine, oil degradation, and other causes).
NOTE: The best location and time to get an oil sample is at the case drain after operation of the engine, when the IDG oil is at the operating temperature (80 deg.C (176 deg.F)).

4. Procedure
Subtask 12-32-24-281-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Oil Sampling
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
CAUTION: WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
   (1) Make sure that the temperature of the IDG decreases to 120 deg.F (48.89 deg.C) or less before you drain it.
   (2) Remove the dust cap from the IDG overfill drain-valve.
   (3) Put the CONTAINER 20L (5 USGAL) below the IDG overfill drain-valve.
   (4) Install the overflow drain hose:
WARNING: YOU MUST PUT THE OVERFLOW DRAIN HOSE INTO A CONTAINER BEFORE YOU CONNECT THE DRAIN HOSE TO THE IDG OVERFILL DRAIN VALVE. MAKE SURE THAT THE DRAIN HOSE HANGS DOWN VERTICALLY AND THE END OF THE HOSE IS ABOVE THE OIL LEVEL IN THE CONTAINER. WHEN YOU CONNECT THE OVERFLOW DRAIN HOSE TO THE IDG, YOU RELEASE THE PRESSURE IN THE IDG OIL SYSTEM AND OIL WILL SPRAY FROM THE DRAIN HOSE. THIS WILL PREVENT BURNS FROM THE HOT OIL SPRAY. HOT OIL CAN CAUSE BURNS TO EYES AND SKIN.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE DEVICES OTHER THAN THE APPROVED OVERFLOW DRAIN-HOSE FITTING. HARD METAL OBJECTS SUCH AS SCREWDRIVERS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE OVERFLOW DRAIN SEAT.
     (a) Put the free end of the drain hose into the CONTAINER 20L (5 USGAL).
     (b) Connect the overflow drain hose with the OMP 2505-3 coupling to the IDG overfill drain-valve.
NOTE: Some pressurized hot oil can flow out of the overflow drain hose when it is connected.
NOTE: The function of the drain hose is to release the IDG oil system during the draining procedure.
NOTE: It is necessary to use a new oil sample bottle and a hose that is free of contamination for this procedure.
   (5) Look at the drain plug (1) on the bottom right side of the IDG.
   (6) Cut and remove the lockwire from the drain plug (1).
   (7) Put a new BOTTLE 1L (0,26 USGAL) - TRANSPARENT below the drain plug (1).
   (8) Loosen the drain plug (1) sufficiently to let the oil drain into the BOTTLE 1L (0,26 USGAL) - TRANSPARENT.
   (9) Fill the BOTTLE 1L (0,26 USGAL) - TRANSPARENT with approximately 0.02 l (0.0053 USgal) of oil.
   (10) TORQUE the drain plug (1) to between 75 and 55 lbf.in (0.85 and 0.62 m.daN ) T.
   (11) Safety the drain plug (1) with steel corrosion resistant safety wire (Material No.
CP05-288) .
   (12) Disconnect the overflow drain hose from the IDG overfill drain-valve.
   (13) Install the dust cap on the IDG overfill drain-valve.
   (14) Write the information that follows on the label of the BOTTLE 1L (0,26 USGAL) - TRANSPARENT with a marker (Material No.CP05-044) :
  • The registration number
  • The engine serial number
  • The date of sample
  • The engine hours
  • The quantity of oil added since sample.

B. Remove the Overflow Drain Hose
   (1) Disconnect the overflow drain hose of the FILLING EQUIPMENT - TANK OIL from the overflow drain half-coupling (6).
   (2) Install the dust cap (5) on the overflow drain half-coupling (6).

C. Fill the IDG with oil or add oil to the IDG after a level check (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-24-612-803).
Subtask 12-32-24-281-054-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
D. IDG Oil-Sample Analysis
   (1) When you get the results of the IDG oil-sample analysis, compare them with the IDG "Oil Contamination Limits" values (maximum values) given in the Standard Practices Manual (SPM) (V99167) 24-10-00 chapter "TESTING", paragraph "Oil Condition":
     (a) If the results of the IDG oil-sample analysis are less than or equal to the IDG "Oil Contamination Limits" (maximum values):
  • No more maintenance is necessary.
     (b) If one of the results of the IDG oil-sample analysis is more than the IDG "Oil Contamination Limits" (maximum values):
