Manually Operate the Variable Stator Vane (VSV) Actuator

3. Job Set-up

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):

WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-809).

   (1) Open the thrust reverser cowl-doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-806):

4. Procedure
Subtask 75-32-05-910-050-A
A. Manual Operation of the Left and Right VSV Actuators
   (1) Remove segment shroud 4 (Ref. AMM TASK 72-24-01-000-801).
   (2) Connect the left VSV actuator (1) to the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV as follows:
     (a) Remove the bolt (5) that attaches the loop clamp (6) and the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) to the support bracket (7).
     (b) Remove the bolt (4) that attaches the loop clamp (8) and the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) to the support bracket (7).
     (c) Put a CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT below the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2).
     (d) Disconnect the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) from the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (3) (two locations).
     (e) Let the fuel drain into the CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT.
     (f) Connect the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV to the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) as follows:
       1 Connect the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV head left hose fitting to the head end fitting of the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2).
       2 Connect the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV rod left hose fitting to the rod end fitting of the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2).
       3 TORQUE the B-nuts to between 308 and 262 lbf.in (3.48 and 2.96 m.daN ) T.
   (3) Remove the segment shroud 2 (
Ref. AMM TASK 72-24-01-000-801).
   (4) Connect the right VSV actuator (9) to the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV as follows:
     (a) Remove the bolt (16) that attaches the loop clamp (12) and the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (10) to the support bracket (13).
     (b) Remove the bolt (15) that attaches the loop clamp (14) and the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (10) to the support bracket (13).
     (c) Put a CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT below the right VSV hydraulic fuel hose-tube (11).
     (d) Disconnect the right VSV hydraulic fuel hose-tube (11) from the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (10) (two locations).
     (e) Let the fuel drain into the CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT.
     (f) Connect the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV to the right VSV hydraulic fuel hose-tube (11) as follows:
       1 Connect the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV head end right hose fitting to the head fitting of the right VSV hydraulic fuel hose-tube (11).
       2 Connect the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV rod right hose fitting to the rod end fitting of the right VSV hydraulic fuel hose-tube (11).
       3 TORQUE the B-nuts to between 308 and 262 lbf.in (3.48 and 2.96 m.daN ) T.
   (5) Connect the
956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV to the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC with quick-connect couplings.
NOTE: This task describes the use of the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC to manually operate the VSV. If the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC is not available, you can also use nitrogen as an alternative pressure source. The operating pressure for the nitrogen is the same as the fluid pressures given below.
   (6) Make sure that you use clean engine oil (Material No.CP2442) or turbine fuel as the hydraulic fluid for the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC.
   (7) Operate the VSV system to the fully open position as follows:
NOTE: The left VSV actuator (1) and the right VSV actuator (9) rods will retract when the VSV system is in the fully closed position.
     (a) Operate the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC between 50 and 100 psig (344.7 and 689.5 kPa) to retract the shafts of the VSV actuators.
     (b) Make sure that the actuators move smoothly to the fully open position.
NOTE: A bind in the system will cause the pressure reading to increase during actuation.
   (8) Operate the VSV system to the fully closed position as follows:
NOTE: The left VSV actuator (1) and the right VSV actuator (9) rods will extend when the VSV system is in the fully closed position.
     (a) Operate the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC between 50 and 100 psig (344.7 and 689.5 kPa) to extend the shafts of the VSV actuators.
     (b) Make sure that the actuators move smoothly to the fully closed position.
NOTE: A bind in the system will cause the pressure reading to increase during actuation.
   (9) Release the hydraulic pressure from the 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC, if it is no longer necessary.
   (10) Disconnect the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) from the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV as follows:
     (a) Put a CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT below the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2).
     (b) Disconnect the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) from the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV (two locations).
     (c) Let the fluid drain into the CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT.
   (11) Connect the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (3) (two locations) to the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2).
     (a) TORQUE the B-nuts to between 308 and 262 lbf.in (3.48 and 2.96 m.daN ) T.
   (12) Apply engine oil (Material No.
CP2442) to the threads of the bolt (4) and bolt (5).
   (13) Install the bolt (4) that attaches the loop clamp (8) and the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) to the support bracket (7) and tighten with your hand.
   (14) Install the bolt (5) that attaches the loop clamp (6) and the left VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (2) to the support bracket (7) and tighten with your hand.
   (15) TORQUE the bolt (4) and the bolt (5) to between 38 and 32 lbf.in (0.43 and 0.36 m.daN ) T.
   (16) Disconnect the right VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (11) from the
956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV as follows:
     (a) Put a CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT below the right VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (11).
     (b) Disconnect the right VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (11) from the 956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV (two location).
     (c) Let the fluid drain into the CONTAINER 5 USGAL (19 L) - FUEL RESISTANT.
   (17) Connect the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (10) (two locations) to the right VSV hydraulic fuel tube-hose (11).
     (a) TORQUE the B-nuts to between 308 and 262 lbf.in (3.48 and 2.96 m.daN ) T.
   (18) Apply engine oil (Material No.
CP2442) to the threads of the bolt (15) and bolt (16).
   (19) Install the bolt (15) that attaches the loop clamp (14) and the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (10) to the support bracket (13) and tighten with your hand.
   (20) Install the bolt (16) that attaches the loop clamp (12) and the VBV-VSV hydraulic fuel manifold (10) to the support bracket (13) and tighten with your hand.
   (21) TORQUE the bolt (15) and bolt (16) to between 38 and 32 lbf.in (0.43 and 0.36 m.daN ) T.
   (22) Remove the
956A1607G02 ADAPTER - VSV from 856A1084G04 ACTUATOR PORTABLE HYDRAULIC.
   (23) Install the segment shroud 2 (Ref. AMM TASK 72-24-01-400-801).
   (24) Install the segment shroud 4 (Ref. AMM TASK 72-24-01-400-801).
5. Close-up
