Procedure after Engine Fire or Use of Fire-Extinguishing Agents [CFML]

TASK 72-00-00-200-821-A
Procedure after Engine Fire or Use of Fire-Extinguishing Agents

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: A LARGE NUMBER OF O-RINGS, GASKETS AND OTHER TYPES OF SEALS ARE MADE OF VITON MATERIAL. VITON MATERIAL DECOMPOSES WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS MORE THAN 750 DEG.F (400 DEG.C). ONE OF THE BY-PRODUCTS OF THIS DECOMPOSITION IS HYDROFLUORIC ACID. THIS ACID CAN CAUSE BAD BURNS. THUS, USE ACID-RESISTANT GLOVES IF YOU MUST REPLACE A VITON SEAL DURING MAINTENANCE AFTER A FIRE.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
1. Reason for the Job
You must do this procedure when fire-extinguishing agents have been used.
NOTE: After any fire damage, the removal of the engine from the aircraft for Inspection is necessary.

   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

Subtask 72-00-00-040-152-A
C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-809).

4. Procedure
Subtask 72-00-00-280-081-A
A. Check of the Green or Yellow Hydraulic System after Engine Pump Failure or Operation in a Possible Cavitation Condition
   (1) If the crew closed the fire shut-off valve during operation of the fire extinguishers, do the check of the hydraulic system after Operation of the engine pumps in possible starvation or cavitation condition (Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-280-006) (Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-280-006).
Subtask 72-00-00-280-082-A
B. Fire Extinguishing Agents Applied Externally
NOTE: Do as soon as possible to avoid soak of contamination on engine hardware.
   (1) If the engine has been exposed to fire extinguishing agents on external surfaces, do as follows where appropriate:
     (a) Carbon dioxide (CO2) contamination:
1 Cold sections: parts not exposed to heat require no maintenance action.
2 Hot sections: engine parts which were at elevated temperatures when exposed to CO2 must be removed and checked
     (b) Chemical foam contamination
CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW FOAM TO ENTER ANY ENGINE CAVITIES AS FOAM RESIDUES MAY CAUSE CORROSION DAMAGE.
1 Wash exposed areas using clean, running water.
2 Scrub to remove all foam agents.
     (c) Dry chemical powders contamination
CAUTION: DO NOT USE WATER. DRY AGENT COMBINES WITH WATER TO FORM AN EVEN MORE CORROSIVE COMPOUND. DO NOT ALLOW AGENT TO ENTER ANY ENGINE CAVITIES. RESIDUES WILL CAUSE CORROSION DAMAGE.
1 Remove all powder residues from engine by utilizing VACUUM CLEANER and AIR SOURCE FILTERED, DRY between 30 psi (2.07 bar) and 40 psi (2.76 bar) as necessary.
2 If powder has turned to glaze due to elevated temperatures, scrub with ardox 6025 (Material No.CP2155) .
Subtask 72-00-00-280-083-A
C. Fire Extinguishing Agents Applied Internally
   (1) If the engine has been exposed to fire extinguishing agents on internal surfaces, do as follows where applicable:
     (a) Carbon dioxide (CO2) contamination: Remove the engine for disassembly, inspection and cleaning (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803) and ESM 720000.
     (b) Chemical foam contamination.
NOTE: Do as soon as possible to avoid soak of contamination on engine hardware.
1 Flush with clean water and motor engine (if practicable) to remove foam residues.
2 Remove engine for disassembly, inspection and cleaning (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803) and ESM 720000.
     (c) Dry chemical powder contamination.
1 Remove all accessible loose powder using VACUUM CLEANER and AIR SOURCE FILTERED, DRY between 30 psi (2.07 bar) and 40 psi (2.76 bar).
2 If powder has turned to glaze due to elevated temperatures, rinse with ardox 6025 (Material No.CP2155) .
3 Dry-motor to clear and dry engine (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-700-805).
4 Remove engine for disassembly and cleaning (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-803) and ESM 720000.
