C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser for Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805).

   (1) Open the thrust reverser cowl-doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-802):

4. Procedure
CAUTION: WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.

A. Inspection of the Engine after Exposure to Excessive Turbulence, High Aircraft Lateral Loads or Heavy or Overweight Landings
   (1) Removal of the protection covers:
CAUTION: REMOVE THE PROTECTION COVERS FROM THE OPENINGS AS NECESSARY TO PREVENT ENGINE DAMAGE.
     (a) Make sure that you remove all the necessary COVER - PROTECTION to prevent damage to the engine.
   (2) Determine the type of event as follows:
     (a) If this task is referenced by (Ref. AMM TASK 05-51-44-200-001), go to step 4.A.(4).
     (b) If this task is referenced by (Ref. AMM TASK 05-51-17-200-001), go to step 4.A.(4).
     (c) If this task is referenced by (Ref. AMM TASK 05-51-11-200-004), go to step 4.A.(3).
   (3) Do the inspection as follows:
     (a) If the data from step 4.A.(2) task reference tells you that the landing is not a hard landing, it is not necessary to do the inspection.
     (b) If the data from step 4.A.(2) task reference tells you that the landing is a hard landing, go to step 4.A.(4) and do the related inspection for phase 1. If there are any findings, go to step 4.A.(4) and do the related inspection for phase 2.
     (c) If the data from step 4.A.(2) task reference tells you that the landing was a severe hard landing, go to step 4.A.(4) and do the related inspection for phase 1 and phase 2.
       1 Contact Airbus and Pratt & Whitney.
       2 Send the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) raw data and the security assurance requirements raw data to Airbus.
CAUTION: BEFORE YOU START THE INSPECTION, MAKE SURE THAT THE PROTECTIVE MAT IS INSTALLED ON THE INLET. IF IT IS NOT INSTALLED, DAMAGE TO THE INLET CAN OCCUR.
     (d) Install the 636-1100-3GSE INLET COWL PROTECT COVER in the inlet cowl.
   (4) Do the item inspection task as follows:

Phase 2
1.Turn the fan rotor with your hand in the direction of normal engine operation (clockwise, as viewed from the rear). Make sure that there is/are no bearing roughness, unusual noises or binding. Rub marks on the fan attrition liner are normal, but new rub marks can be a sign that contact occurred between the fan blade tips and the attrition liner during the hard landing or overweight landing. If you see this, examine the fan blade tips for signs of tip bluing (a sign of overheat) or cracking of the tip (Ref. AMM TASK 72-11-03-220-802). It is necessary to use a mirror to see the opposite side of the fan blade.

2.Examine the primary nozzle. Make sure that it is correctly attached to the engine and that there is/are no distortion, cracks, loose rivets or signs of shearing or delamination.

3.Lift the fan cowl doors and hold them open with the hold−open rods. Examine the nose cowl attachments of the fan case. Make sure that there is/are no distortion, cracks, delamination or torn or pulled fasteners.

4.Do a general visual inspection of the engine as follows:
  • Lift the thrust reverser halves. Look at the engine fan case and the core engine zones. Examine for fluid leaks, distorted or broken linkages, brackets or fasteners and for unusual component positions and/or orientations (Ref. AMM TASK 73-11-00-210-804) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-210-810).
  • Remove the fan exit duct covers and examine the 2.5 bleed cavity for leakage.

If you find damage:
  • Repair all the damage and fluid leaks that you can see.

5.Do a visual inspection of the front and rear engine mounts with the applicable maintenance manual. Examine all the engine mounted accessories to make sure that the components are correctly attached (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-220-802).

6.Look in the exhaust at the Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) blades and seals. Rubbing of the seals and blade shrouds are normal, but heavy rubbing between the shrouds and the blade seal fins that make the fins flatter, binding between the seals and blade seal fins or signs of powdered or molten material can be a sign that internal damage has occurred.

If you find damage:

7.Examine the magnetic chip collectors and the scavenge oil filter for signs of bearing or gear distress (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-281-802).
X

If you find damage that is not in the EMM limits, or if you find bearing or gear material, remove the engine (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-802).

8.Do the idle leak check (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-720-814).
  • If you find leaks, repair as necessary.

9.Do a power assurance check (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-710-806).
  • Make sure that the engine runs in normal operating limits (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-910-803). You must carefully monitor the engine N1 and N2 vibration. When they are higher than the normal engine levels, it can be a sign of internal damage.

If you cannot get stable engine operation limits, remove the engine (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-802).

10.Before engine shutdown:
  • Do one thrust reverser deploy and re−stow cycle at idle conditions, or
  • After engine shutdown, do an operational test of the thrust reverser system with the Centralized Fault Display System (CFDS).

11.After the test, examine the magnetic chip collectors and the items of the scavenge oil filter for signs of bearing or gear distress (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-281-802).
X

If you do not find signs of bearing or gear distress, see steps 4.A.(8) and 4.A.(9).

If you find bearing or gear material, remove the engine (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-802).

X
   (5) If repairable damage is found, do a power acceleration, deceleration and assurance test (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-710-805) and (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-710-806).
   (6) If any other damage is found, remove the engine from service (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-51-000-802).
   (7) If no other problems are found, the engine is serviceable.
   (8) If the engine is returned to service, do a check of the main bearing chip collectors before 25 flight hours of service (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-281-802).
   (9) If no problems are found, the engine can continue in service.
     (a) Do a check of the main bearing chip collectors before 200 flight hours of service (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-281-802).
   (10) If no problems are found, the engine can continue in service and return to the normal chip collector inspection interval.
   (11) Remove the 636-1100-3GSE INLET COWL PROTECT COVER.
   (12) Examine the assembly for foreign objects, damage and correct assembly.
   (13) Installation of the protection covers:
CAUTION: INSTALL PROTECTION COVERS ON ALL THE OPENINGS IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
     (a) Make sure that you install the COVER - PROTECTION as necessary to prevent damage to the engine.
