Installation of the RAT Actuator
WARNING:
PUT THE SAFETY DEVICES AND THE WARNING NOTICES IN POSITION BEFORE YOU START A TASK ON OR NEAR:
- THE FLIGHT CONTROLS
- THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES
- THE LANDING GEAR AND THE RELATED DOORS
- COMPONENTS THAT MOVE.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE TRAVEL RANGES OF THE FLIGHT CONTROLS SURFACES ARE CLEAR. MOVEMENT OF FLIGHT CONTROLS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE RAT TRAVEL RANGE IS CLEAR BEFORE YOU EXTEND/RETRACT THE RAT.
WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE GROUND SAFETY-LOCKS ARE IN POSITION ON THE LANDING GEAR. THIS WILL PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT OF THE LANDING GEAR, AND THUS POSSIBLE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT.

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
(2) Make sure that the Blue hydraulic system is depressurized and put it in the maintenance configuration.
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001).
(3) Make sure that the reservoir of the Blue hydraulic system is depressurized.
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
(4) Make sure that the left main landing-gear door is open (Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-010-001).
(5) Make sure that the access door 195BB is open.
(6) Make sure that the access panel 147BB is open.
(7) Make sure that the access panel 147CB is open.
(8) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) are in position to tell persons not to pressurize the Blue hydraulic system:
(10) Make sure that the safety barriers are in position.
Subtask 29-22-53-865-077-A WARNING:
OBEY THE HYDRAULIC SAFETY PROCEDURES.
(1) Obey the hydraulic safety procedures (Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-910-002). (2) Make sure that the Blue hydraulic system is depressurized and put it in the maintenance configuration.
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-864-001).
(3) Make sure that the reservoir of the Blue hydraulic system is depressurized.
(Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
(4) Make sure that the left main landing-gear door is open (Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-010-001).
(5) Make sure that the access door 195BB is open.
(6) Make sure that the access panel 147BB is open.
(7) Make sure that the access panel 147CB is open.
(8) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) are in position to tell persons not to pressurize the Blue hydraulic system:
- In the cockpit on the hydraulic section 40VU of the overhead panel.
- On the ground service panel of the Blue hydraulic system.
(10) Make sure that the safety barriers are in position.
B. Make sure that this(these) circuit breaker(s) is(are) open, safetied and tagged:

A. Preparation for Installation
(1) Make sure that the parts retained from the removed component are clean and in the correct condition.
(2) Clean the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
(3) Do an inspection of the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
(4) Make sure that the hydraulic line end-fittings are serviceable.
(5) Make sure that all the electrical connections are clean and in the correct condition.
(6) Apply Non Hardening Jointing Putty-Medium Temp. Area - - (Material No.06LCG9) to the shaft of the bolts (1),(19) and (20).
(7) Apply Silicone base Grease-Mechanisms and Seals - - (Material No.03JCA9) to the support shafts (31) of the RAT actuator (27).
Subtask 29-22-53-420-062-A (1) Make sure that the parts retained from the removed component are clean and in the correct condition.
(2) Clean the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
(3) Do an inspection of the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
(4) Make sure that the hydraulic line end-fittings are serviceable.
(5) Make sure that all the electrical connections are clean and in the correct condition.
(6) Apply Non Hardening Jointing Putty-Medium Temp. Area - - (Material No.06LCG9) to the shaft of the bolts (1),(19) and (20).
(7) Apply Silicone base Grease-Mechanisms and Seals - - (Material No.03JCA9) to the support shafts (31) of the RAT actuator (27).
B. Installation of the RAT Actuator
(2) Install the bolt (42), the washers (41), the washer (45) and the nut (46). Do not tighten the nut (46) at this time.
(3) Put the rear gimbal half (5) on the RAT actuator (27).
(4) Carefully raise the RAT actuator (27) to its correct installation position.
(5) Hold the gimbal half (5) with your hand.
(6) Install the bolts (19) and (20) into the upper section of the structure (8) and (18).
(7) Put the forward gimbal half (14) on the RAT actuator (27).
(8) Make sure that the bolts (19) and (20) are in the correct position between the gimbal halves (5) and (14).
(9) Install the bolts (13) and the washers (12).
(10) Install the nuts (6) and the washers (7), but do not tighten the nuts (6) at this time.
(11) Install the washers (9) and (15) and the nuts (10) and (16).
(12) Tighten the nut (10) and safety it with a new AIPC 29-22-03-03-080 COTTER PIN (11) or AIPC 29-22-83-03-180 COTTER PIN (11).
(13) Tighten the nut (16) and safety it with a new AIPC 29-22-03-03-080 COTTER PIN (17) or AIPC 29-22-83-03-180 COTTER PIN (17).
(14) Tighten the nuts (6).
(15) Put the bonding strap (37) in position and install the washer (36) and the screw (35) (Ref. AMM TASK 20-28-00-912-802).
(16) Remove the protective caps from the electrical connectors and the receptacles.
(17) Connect the electrical connectors (25), (28), (33), (34) and (38) to their related receptacles.
(18) Remove the blanking caps from the hydraulic line end-fittings.
(19) Apply the Phosphate Ester Hydraulic Fluid-General Power - - (Material No.02ABA1) to the threads of the line end-fittings.
(20) Remove the blanking plugs from the hydraulic ports.
(21) Attach the union nuts (29) and (30) to their related ports.
(22) TORQUE the union nut (29) to between 5.9 and 5.4 m.daN (43.51 and 39.82 lbf.ft )
.
(23) TORQUE the union nut (30) to between 3.2 and 2.9 m.daN (23.60 and 21.39 lbf.ft )
.
(24) TORQUE the nut (46) to between 5.29 and 4.74 m.daN (39.01 and 34.96 lbf.ft )
.
(25) With the GAGE - FEELER measure the axial clearance between the forked mounting (43) and the washers (41).
Subtask 29-22-53-790-052-A CAUTION:
USE A SECOND WRENCH TO APPLY COUNTERTORQUE TO THE UNION WHEN YOU DISCONNECT/CONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES ON UNIONS. IF YOU DO NOT USE THE SECOND WRENCH, THERE IS A RISK THAT YOU WILL LOOSEN OR TIGHTEN THE UNION TOO MUCH.
CAUTION:
YOU MUST INSTALL HYDRAULIC TUBES WITH HYDRAULIC FLUID AS LUBRICANT.
(1) Put the eye-end (44) of the RAT actuator (27) between the forked mounting (43) of the leg assembly (40). (2) Install the bolt (42), the washers (41), the washer (45) and the nut (46). Do not tighten the nut (46) at this time.
(3) Put the rear gimbal half (5) on the RAT actuator (27).
(4) Carefully raise the RAT actuator (27) to its correct installation position.
(5) Hold the gimbal half (5) with your hand.
(6) Install the bolts (19) and (20) into the upper section of the structure (8) and (18).
(7) Put the forward gimbal half (14) on the RAT actuator (27).
(8) Make sure that the bolts (19) and (20) are in the correct position between the gimbal halves (5) and (14).
(9) Install the bolts (13) and the washers (12).
(10) Install the nuts (6) and the washers (7), but do not tighten the nuts (6) at this time.
(11) Install the washers (9) and (15) and the nuts (10) and (16).
(12) Tighten the nut (10) and safety it with a new AIPC 29-22-03-03-080 COTTER PIN (11) or AIPC 29-22-83-03-180 COTTER PIN (11).
(13) Tighten the nut (16) and safety it with a new AIPC 29-22-03-03-080 COTTER PIN (17) or AIPC 29-22-83-03-180 COTTER PIN (17).
(14) Tighten the nuts (6).
(15) Put the bonding strap (37) in position and install the washer (36) and the screw (35) (Ref. AMM TASK 20-28-00-912-802).
(16) Remove the protective caps from the electrical connectors and the receptacles.
(17) Connect the electrical connectors (25), (28), (33), (34) and (38) to their related receptacles.
(18) Remove the blanking caps from the hydraulic line end-fittings.
(19) Apply the Phosphate Ester Hydraulic Fluid-General Power - - (Material No.02ABA1) to the threads of the line end-fittings.
(20) Remove the blanking plugs from the hydraulic ports.
(21) Attach the union nuts (29) and (30) to their related ports.
(22) TORQUE the union nut (29) to between 5.9 and 5.4 m.daN (43.51 and 39.82 lbf.ft )
. (23) TORQUE the union nut (30) to between 3.2 and 2.9 m.daN (23.60 and 21.39 lbf.ft )
. (24) TORQUE the nut (46) to between 5.29 and 4.74 m.daN (39.01 and 34.96 lbf.ft )
. (25) With the GAGE - FEELER measure the axial clearance between the forked mounting (43) and the washers (41).
NOTE: An axial clearance of 1.32 mm (0.0520 in.) to 1.82 mm (0.0717 in.) between the forked mounting (43) and the washers (41) is permitted.
C. Leak Test of the Hydraulic Connections
(1) Remove the CONTAINER 5 L (1.32 USGAL) from below the hydraulic connections.
(2) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
(3) Pressurize the reservoir of the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-002).
(4) Pressurize the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-863-003).
(5) Examine the hydraulic connections of the RAT actuator and make sure that there are no leaks.
(6) Depressurize the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-003).
Subtask 29-22-53-820-053-A (1) Remove the CONTAINER 5 L (1.32 USGAL) from below the hydraulic connections.
(2) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
(3) Pressurize the reservoir of the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-002).
(4) Pressurize the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-863-003).
(5) Examine the hydraulic connections of the RAT actuator and make sure that there are no leaks.
(6) Depressurize the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-003).
D. Adjustment of the RAT Doors
(1) Do the adjustment procedure of the RAT doors (Ref. AMM TASK 29-22-00-820-004).
(2) If you can not adjust the doors correctly, do the adjustment procedure of the RAT actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 29-22-00-820-004).

(2) If you can not adjust the doors correctly, do the adjustment procedure of the RAT actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 29-22-00-820-004).

A. Close Access
(1) Put the protective cover (2) in the correct installation position over the deployment solenoids
.
(a) Tighten the screws (1) in the quick release fasteners (3).
(b) Install the screw (5) in the protective cover (2).
(2) Install the access panels 147BB 147CB.
(3) Close the left main landing-gear door (Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-010-001).
(4) Close the access door 195BB.
Subtask 29-22-53-942-056-A (1) Put the protective cover (2) in the correct installation position over the deployment solenoids

B. Put the aircraft back to the serviceable condition.

(3) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
