WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT:
  • THE AIRCRAFT IS IN A SEALED HANGAR WHEN YOU REMOVE THE OIL-INLET COVER
  • A PLASTIC SHEET GIVES PROTECTION TO THE ENGINE AFT SUMP DURING ALL THE PROCEDURE.
IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.

3. Job Set-up

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-040):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

   (2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) in position.

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) IS DEACTIVATED BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND THE THRUST REVERSER. IF THE HCU IS NOT DEACTIVATED, THERE IS A RISK OF UNWANTED THRUST REVERSER OPERATION WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
   (1) Make the thrust reverser unserviceable for maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-481-041).

D. Open the thrust reverser doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-040):

E. Remove the core nozzle assembly (Ref. AMM TASK 78-11-11-000-041).

4. Procedure
Subtask 79-00-00-210-091-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Do a Visual Inspection of the Aft Sump Area for Oil Leakage
   (1) If the source of the oil leakage is evident, do the applicable task to repair the leak.
   (2) Examine the oil supply tube (10) and the oil damping tube (20).
F Inspection of Aft Sump Parts ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (a) Do a check of the B-nut gap with the nipple.
       1 If there is no clearance, replace the B-nut.
     (b) Do a check of the B-nut correct torque value as follows:
       1 The supply tube B-nut
  • TORQUE value must be to between 315 and 270 lbf.in (3.56 and 3.05 m.daN ) T.
       2 The damping tube B-nut
     (c) Disconnect the supply oil tube and the damping oil tube.
     (d) Clean the supply and the damping oil tubes with acetone (Material No.
CP1039) or white spirit (Material No.CP2010) or Ardrox 552 (Material No.CP2559) or Turco IND 79 (Material No.CP2560) .
     (e) Do a check of the sealing area.

PRE CFM SB 72-0403

       1 If the sealing is damaged, replace the engine.

POST CFM SB 72-0403

       2 If the sealing is damaged, replace the tube.

     (f) Do a visual check of the tubes exposed areas for cracks.

PRE CFM SB 72-0403

       1 If you find a crack, replace the engine.

       2 If you find a crack, replace the tube.

   (3) Examine the oil scavenge tube (30).
     (a) Do a check of the oil scavenge tube B-nut torque value as follows:
       1 The scavenge tube B-nut
  • TORQUE value must be to between 531 and 446 lbf.in (6.00 and 5.04 m.daN ) T.
     (b) Disconnect the oil scavenge tube.
     (c) Put a protection on the No. 5 bearing cavity to prevent contamination with the material.
     (d) Clean the oil scavenge tube with acetone (Material No.
CP1039) or white spirit (Material No.CP2010) or Ardrox 552 (Material No.CP2559) or Turco IND 79 (Material No.CP2560) .
     (e) Do a check of the tube sealing area.
       1 If the sealing is damaged, replace the engine.
     (f) Do a visual check of the oil scavenge tube exposed areas for cracks.
       1 If you find a crack, replace the engine.
   (4) Remove the oil inlet cover (Ref. AMM TASK 72-56-00-000-002).
   (5) Examine the oil inlet cover (40).
F Inspection of Aft Sump Parts ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (a) Do a check of the supply tube AIPC 72-56-00-02-070 NIPPLE (50) torque value as follows:
       1 The supply tube nipple
     (b) Do a check of the nipple AIPC 72-56-00-02-080 O-RING (60).
       1 If the nipple O-ring is damaged, replace the O-ring.
     (c) Do a check of the nipple sealing surface.
       1 If the sealing surface is damaged, replace the nipple.
     (d) Do a check of the oil inlet cover
AIPC 72-56-00-02-130 O-RING (70).
       1 If the oil inlet cover O-ring is damaged, replace the O-ring.
     (e) Do a check of the oil inlet cover
AIPC 72-56-00-02-140 GASKET SEAL (80).
       1 If the oil inlet cover gasket seal is damaged, replace the gasket seal.
   (6) Examine the No. 5 bearing support.
F Inspection of Aft Sump Parts ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (a) Do a check of the damping tube AIPC 72-56-00-02-030 NIPPLE (90) torque value as follows:
       1 The damping tube nipple
     (b) Do a check of the damping nipple AIPC 72-56-00-02-040 O-RING (100).
       1 If the damping nipple O-ring is damaged, replace the O-ring.
     (c) Do a check of the sealing surface of the scavenge tube nipple.
       1 If the sealing surface of the scavenge tube nipple is damaged, replace the engine.
     (d) Do a spot fluorescent-penetrant inspection (
Ref. AMM TASK 70-51-00-230-002) of the weld bead of the scavenge tube nipple.
       1 If you find a crack, replace the engine.
Subtask 79-00-00-420-062-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Reconnection of the Oil Scavenge Tube
   (1) Reconnect the oil scavenge tube as follows:
     (a) Remove the protection from the No. 5 bearing cavity.
     (b) Apply a thin layer of molykote G rapid (Material No.CP2104) with a spray gun on the guide bushing of the oil scavenge tube.
     (c) Engage the guide bushing of the oil scavenge tube into the boss of the Turbine Rear Frame (TRF) at the 5 o'clock position.
     (d) Connection of the coupling nut of oil scavenge tube.
CAUTION: ALWAYS INSTALL THE COUNTER WRENCH ON THE NIPPLE OF THE NUMBER-5 BEARING SUPPORT. THEN LOOSEN OR TIGHTEN THE COUPLING NUT OF THE OIL SCAVENGE TUBE. THIS WILL HELP TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE NIPPLE.
       1 Connect the coupling nut of the oil scavenge tube to the 6 o'clock nipple on the No. 5 bearing support. Tighten the coupling nut with your hand.
   (2) Install the 856A3492 WRENCH-COUNTERTORQUE NO 5 BEARING NIPPLE LINE on the TRF flange.
     (a) Loosen the four counter-wrench bolts.
     (b) Install the counter-wrench on the No. 5 bearing support nipple.
     (c) Tighten the two support bolts on the TRF.
     (d) Do a clockwise rotation on the counter-wrench to take up and tighten the four counter-wrench bolts.
   (3) Tighten the coupling nut of the oil scavenge tube.
     (a) Attach with CP8001lockwire 0.032 in. (0.8 mm) dia. or CP8006safety cable 0.032 in. (0.8 mm) dia..
   (4) Remove the counter-wrench from the TRF flange.

D. Clean the TRF tube struts 7 and 10 from oil and coking with acetone (Material No.CP1039) or white spirit (Material No.CP2010) or Ardrox 552 (Material No.CP2559) or Turco IND 79 (Material No.CP2560) .
