WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

1. Reason for the Job
This procedure gives the criteria for the visual inspection of the fan case.
NOTE: The inspection criteria below are applicable after the removal of the high metal or fray carbon with hand blending.
NOTE: You can use equivalent alternatives for standard tools, equipment and consumable materials.

3. Job Set-up

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):

NOTE: This surface is only visible when the inlet is disassembled from the engine.

B.Elongated the fastening holes on the inner diameter

  • Minimum distance between two elongated holes (more than two consecutive fastening holes on the inner diameter): 15.75 in. (0.40 m)

C.Elongated the locating holes on the inner diameter
NOTE: On A1 flange, there are the two locating holes (No. 1 and No. 14).

  • Cumulative impacted surface: 155 in.2 (1000.00 cm2)
  • Maximum axial length: 1.97 in. (50.04 mm)
  • The minimum distance between the damaged areas is equal to the maximum width of the nearest single damaged area.
If the carbon plies show through a Continue-In-Service limit of 50 cycles or 125 hours is permitted. Carbon plies must remain within the carbon plies criteria under visual inspection. A daily inspection of the crater must be performed. See repair (Ref. AMM TASK 72-23-01-300-802).
C.Groove (length more than 5 times width and oriented 0 to 80 degrees from engine axis)
  • Four grooves
  • Depth: Carbon does not show through.
  • 1.10 in. (27.94 mm) in width

E.Cracks on the abradable

NOTE: Cracks linked to a serviceable crater are not to be considered.
If more than 25 cracks, width less than or equal to 0.02 in. (0.51 mm), depth any amount the continue-in-service limit of 100 cycles is permitted before tap test inspection at cracks location.
If a hollow sound is detected, do an abradable strip local repair of the affected area:
If no hollow sound detected, more than 25 cracks are acceptable.
NOTE: Cracks linked to a serviceable crater are not to be considered.
F.Circumferential groove (360 degrees or oriented within 80 and 90 degrees from the engine axis)
  • Any number of the grooves in the first 1.97 in. (50.04 mm) from the leading edge less than 0.38 in. (9.65 mm) in cumulative widths
  • Any number of the grooves less than 1.18 in. (29.97 mm) in cumulative width for the total strip width (with respect of the grooves criteria in the first 1.97 in. (50.04 mm) from leading edge)
  • Carbon layer doesn't show through inside the circumferential groove.
