WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

     (b) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 2)

   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) in position.

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-809).
4. Procedure
Subtask 80-12-49-210-050-A
A. Visual Inspection of the Starter Air Duct
NOTE: The starter air duct (1) has been divided to three sections A, B and C:
  • section A from the pylon to upper spherical flex joint,
  • section B between upper and lower spherical flex joints,
  • section C from starter air valve orifice to the lower spherical flex joint.
   (1) Do the visual inspection of the starter air duct (1) from the pylon to the starter air valve using the following criteria:

Rigid Tube Sections
1. Cracks
Not serviceable.
If damaged, replace the duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).
2. Dents
Dents shall not exceed 10 mm (0.4 in.).
If assembly is beyond serviceable limits, replace duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).
3. Nicks, scratches, chafing or scores
Depth must not exceed:
  • For sections A and C: 0.043 mm (0.0017 in.),
  • For section B: 0.035 mm (0.0014 in.).
If assembly is beyond serviceable limits, replace duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).
Welded End Fittings
1. Cracks
Not serviceable.
If damaged, replace the duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).
2. Nicks, scratches and gouges on non-sealing surfaces
Depth must not exceed 0.13 mm (0.005 in.) after removal of high metal.
If assembly is beyond serviceable limits, replace duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).
Weld Joints
1. Cracks in welds not extending into parent metal
Not serviceable.
If damaged, replace the duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).
Spherical Flex Joints
1. Nicks, scratches and gouges on outer surface
Depth must not exceed 0.13 mm (0.005 in.) deep after removal of high metal.
If assembly is beyond serviceable limits, replace duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-12-49-400-802).

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.

B. Do the reactivation of the thrust reverser system after ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-440-809).
