4. Procedure
Subtask 80-11-05-020-051-A
A. Removal of the Starter Magnetic Plug for Inspection
   (1) Remove the magnetic plug (2) from the oil drain plug (1).
     (a) Push and turn the magnetic plug (2) counterclockwise to release it.
NOTE: The oil drain plug (1) has a built-in check valve to permit removal of the magnetic plug (2) without draining the oil from the starter.
NOTE: Keep the magnetic plug (2) away from metal objects to prevent additional contamination.
   (2) Remove and discard the two preformed packings (3).
Subtask 80-11-05-210-050-A
B. Inspection of the Magnetic Plug (2)
   (1) Examine the magnetic plug (2) for the quantity and type of contaminants. If the contamination you see on the magnetic plug (2) looks important, do as follows:
NOTE: Carbon and dirt may form sludge on the magnetic plug (2) along with metal particles, and cause misleading appearance in the quantity of contamination.
     (a) Clean the magnetic plug (2) with PAPER - TISSUE and retain the removed particles.
     (b) Examine the metallic contaminants under a MAGNIFYING GLASS POWER 10X. Use the inspection criteria which that follow:
1 A small accumulation of fine slivers and relatively flat flakes of metal shows a normal wear. This is an acceptable condition.
2 If you see a larger accumulation of particles or particles larger than 0.1 in. (2.54 mm), do as follows:
a Drain the starter oil, then service the starter (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-05-600-803).
b Complete two dry motoring check cycles (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-700-805).
c Examine the magnetic plug (2) again. A larger accumulation of particles or particles larger than 0.1 in. (2.54 mm) in any direction, show that there is some internal damage and that a starter replacement is necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-05-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-05-400-801).
Subtask 80-11-05-420-051-A

   (2) Install the two packings (3) on the magnetic plug (2).
   (3) Install the magnetic plug (2) in the oil drain plug (1):
     (a) Push inward and turn clockwise to engage the locking device.
Subtask 80-11-05-610-050-A
