Removal of the Pneumatic Air Starter


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: IF IT IS NECESSARY TO ENERGIZE THE AIRCRAFT FOR MAINTENANCE WORK WHILE YOU DO THIS MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE, MAKE SURE THAT ONLY EXTERNAL POWER IS USED. THE USE OF APU OR ENGINE POWER CAN CAUSE PRESSURIZED AIR LEAKAGE IN THE PNEUMATIC SYSTEM AND INJURY CAN OCCUR.

Subtask 80-11-05-941-050-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch, and
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).
   (3) On the overhead control and indicator panel 25VU, on the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) section:
     (a) Make sure that the APU MASTER SW pushbutton is released.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the APU.

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

4. Procedure
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU MOVE THE ENGINE STARTER. BECAUSE THE STARTER WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 38 POUNDS (17 KG), INJURY CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DURING THE REMOVAL, KEEP THE STARTER PERPENDICULAR TO ITS AGB MOUTING PAD. IF YOU DO NOT, THE SEAL RING CAN SNAP OUT AND CAUSE THE SUDDEN DISENGAGEMENT OF THE STARTER BECAUSE OF ITS WEIGHT, AND THUS CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE DRIVE SHAFT. NEVER LET THE DRIVE SHAFT SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE STARTER.

A. Removal of the Pneumatic Air Starter
   (1) Drain the pneumatic air starter (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-05-600-803).
   (2) Remove the starter air valve (2) (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-15-000-801).
   (3) Loosen the nut (3) from the tightener (5).
   (4) Remove the V-band clamp (4) that attaches the pneumatic air starter (1) to the pneumatic air starter pad (12).
   (5) Carefully pull the pneumatic air starter (1) forward until the pneumatic air starter shaft (6) disengages from the Accessory Gearbox (AGB) (13).
   (6) Remove and discard the O-ring (7) from the flange of the pneumatic air starter (1).
   (7) Remove and discard the O-ring (8) from the pneumatic air starter shaft (6).
   (8) Remove and discard the O-ring (11) from the lubrication nozzle (10).
   (9) Install COVER - PROTECTION and CAP - PROTECTION on all open ports, open tubes, open hoses and connectors.
