Installation of the Fuel Metering Unit (FMU)


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 73-21-05-941-053-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) are in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch, and
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Make sure that the fan cowl doors are open (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

     (b) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 2)

   (2) Make sure that the ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) is in position.
4. Procedure
WARNING: USE PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT. USE THE ENGINE OIL IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. ENGINE OIL IS TOXIC.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE/INSTALL THIS COMPONENT. THE WEIGHT OF THIS COMPONENT IS 31.4 LBS (14.2 KG). YOU MUST GET SUFFICIENT AID FROM OTHER PERSONNEL AND THE APPLICABLE EQUIPMENT TO HOLD THE COMPONENT. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, INJURIES TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
Subtask 73-21-05-420-051-A
A. Installation of the Fuel Metering Unit (FMU)
   (1) Remove the COVER - PROTECTION and CAP - PROTECTION from the openings, tubes, hoses and connectors.
   (2) Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and clear of unwanted materials.
   (3) Connection of the fuel tube (15) to the FMU (1):
     (a) Lubricate the new EIPC 73-21-05-01-090 GASKET (17) with the engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
     (b) Install the new gasket (17) and the fuel tube (15) in the correct position of the FMU (1).
     (c) Install the four bolts (16) on the fuel tube (15) and tighten them with your hand.
     (d) TORQUE the four bolts (16) to between 120.75 and 109.25 lbf.in (1.36 and 1.23 m.daN ) T.
   (4) Install the
956A1613G01 ADAPTER, FUEL METERING UNIT on the 9471M17 STAND, JACK - LRU INSTALL/REMOVE.
   (5) Install the FMU (1) on the 956A1613G01 ADAPTER, FUEL METERING UNIT.
   (6) Install the FMU (1) in the correct position on the engine.
   (7) Lubricate the threads of the four bolts (21) with the engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
   (8) Install the four bolts (21) and the four washers (22) on the FMU (1) and tighten them with your hand.
   (9) TORQUE the four bolts (21) to between 74.55 and 67.45 lbf.in (0.84 and 0.76 m.daN ) T.
   (10) Remove the
956A1613G01 ADAPTER, FUEL METERING UNIT from the FMU (1).
   (11) Connection of the fuel tube (18) to the FMU (1):
     (a) Lubricate the threads of the four bolts (19) and the new EIPC 73-21-05-01-060 GASKET (20) with the engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
     (b) Install the new gasket (20) and the fuel tube (18) in the correct position on the FMU (1).
     (c) Install the four bolts (19) on the fuel tube (18) and tighten them with your hand.
     (d) TORQUE the four bolts (19) to between 120.75 and 109.25 lbf.in (1.36 and 1.23 m.daN ) T.
   (12) Connection of the fuel tube (15) to the fuel tube (26):
     (a) Lubricate the new
EIPC 72-00-01-03-470 GASKET (25) with the engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
     (b) Install the new gasket (25) and the fuel tube (15) in the correct position on the fuel tube (26).
     (c) Install the four bolts (24) and the four nuts (23) and tighten them with your hand.
     (d) TORQUE the four bolts (24) to between 92.4 and 83.6 lbf.in (1.04 and 0.94 m.daN ) T.
   (13) Connection of the fuel tube (12) to the FMU (1):
CAUTION: USE TWO WRENCHES TO LOOSEN OR TIGHTEN THE TUBE COUPLING NUT. ONE WRENCH TO HOLD THE UNION AND ONE TO LOOSEN OR TIGHTEN THE COUPLING NUT. THIS PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE HARDWARE.
     (a) Lubricate the threads of the spherical pipe coupling (14) with the engine oil (Material No.
CP2442) .
     (b) Engage the coupling nut (13) on the spherical pipe coupling (14).
     (c) TORQUE the coupling nut (13) to between 300 and 270 lbf.in (3.39 and 3.05 m.daN ) T.
   (14) Connection of the fuel tube (9) to the FMU (1):
     (a) Lubricate the threads of the four bolts (10) and the new
EIPC 73-21-05-01-130 GASKET (11) with the engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
     (b) Install the new gasket (11) and the fuel tube (9) in the correct position on the FMU (1).
     (c) Install the four bolts (10) on the fuel tube (9) and tighten them with your hand.
     (d) TORQUE the four bolts (10) to between 120.75 and 109.25 lbf.in (1.36 and 1.23 m.daN ) T.
   (15) Connection of the fuel tube (6) to the FMU (1):
     (a) Lubricate the threads of the four bolts (7) and the new
EIPC 73-21-05-01-110 GASKET (8) with the engine oil (Material No.CP2442) .
     (b) Install the new gasket (8) and the fuel tube (6) in the correct position on the FMU (1).
     (c) Install the four bolts (7) on the fuel tube (6) and tighten them with your hand.
     (d) TORQUE the four bolts (7) to between 120.75 and 109.25 lbf.in (1.36 and 1.23 m.daN ) T.
   (16) Connect these harness electrical connectors to the applicable receptacles of the FMU (1):
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS ARE CLEAN BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT OR CONNECT THEM. CONTAMINATION ON THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
     (a) Connect the HJ5B harness electrical connector (3) to the FMU (1).
     (b) Connect the HJ5A harness electrical connector (2) to the FMU (1).
   (17) Install the fuel strainer differential pressure sensor (transducer) (5) (
Ref. AMM TASK 73-34-10-400-801).
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FOR THE FMU AND THE FUEL STRAINER DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SENSOR ARE CONNECTED TO THE CORRECT HARNESSES. IF THEY ARE NOT, FAULTS OF THE FMV, FUEL STRAINER DELTA PRESSURE, TCMA AND EOS CAN OCCUR DURING THE IDLE TEST.
   (18) Connect the electrical connector (27) to the fuel strainer differential pressure sensor (5).

B. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Close the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-410-803):
