Removal of the Left Engine Fan Cowl Door


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE AFTER SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE CAN STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, INJURY CAN OCCUR.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE FAN COWL DOOR IS SUFFICIENTLY SUPPORTED DURING REMOVAL OR INSTALLATION. THE FAN COWL DOOR WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 100 LBS (45.5 KG). IF IT IS NOT SUFFICIENTLY SUPPORTED, INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE COMPONENTS CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: THIS PART IS A REMOVABLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENT (RSC), WHICH CAN BE MOVED BETWEEN AIRCRAFT. THUS IT CAN HAVE DIFFERENT OPERATION CONDITIONS AND A DIFFERENT LIFE RECORD (FLIGHT HOURS/FLIGHT CYCLES/CALENDAR) FROM THE AIRCRAFT IT IS INSTALLED ON OR REMOVED FROM. THE OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SPECIFIC TRACKING AND CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS OF REMOVABLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS. INCORRECT MAINTENANCE OF THESE COMPONENTS CAN CAUSE A RISK FOR THE FLIGHT SAFETY.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 71-13-10-941-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) Do the procedure to prevent engine motoring
(Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-833).
   (2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
   (3) Retraction of the slats.
CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE/INSTALL THE FAN COWL DOORS IF THE WING LEADING EDGE SLATS ARE EXTENDED. THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FAN COWL, THE WING LEADING EDGE SLATS AND THE WING.
     (a) Make sure that the slats are retracted.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in the cockpit to tell persons not to move the slat control lever.

B. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser for Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805).
4. Procedure
CAUTION: WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
Subtask 71-13-10-480-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Installation of the Fan Cowl Sling
F Left Fan Cowl ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) Remove the six screws (8) from the three hoist inserts on the left fan cowl (1). Keep them for later use.
   (2) Attach the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING to the three hoist points on the left fan cowl (1). Refer to the instructions of the manufacturer of the sling.

B. Removal of the Left Fan Cowl Door
CAUTION: WHEN YOU OPEN OR CLOSE THE FAN COWL AFT LATCH (L3), OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
  • DO NOT OPEN THE LATCH HOOK MORE THAN NECESSARY TO DISENGAGE FROM OR ENGAGE THE KEEPER.
  • DO NOT MOVE THE LATCH HOOK TOO MUCH IN THE DIRECTION OF THE LATCH HANDLE OR PUT THE LATCH HOOK AGAINST THE LATCH HANDLE.
  • MAKE SURE THAT THE ANGULAR POSITION OF THE LATCH HOOK IS A MINIMUM OF 90 DEGREES FROM THE LATCH HANDLE.
IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, THE LATCH CAN HIT THE ENGINE OIL TUBE AND CAUSE DAMAGE.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FAN COWL OR THE PYLON WHEN YOU LIFT THE FAN COWL.
   (1) Open the latches of the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-802).
   (2) Slowly lift the left fan cowl (1) with the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING until you can get access to the fan cowl door hinges.
   (3) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
   (4) Disconnection of the forward Hold Open Rod (HOR)
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE FORWARD HOLD OPEN ROD DOES NOT HANG LOOSE. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS CAUTION, DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
     (a) Disconnect the forward HOR from the bracket on the fan case (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-08-000-801).
   (5) Disconnection of the aft Hold Open Rod (HOR)
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE FORWARD HOLD OPEN ROD DOES NOT HANG LOOSE. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS CAUTION, DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
     (a) Disconnect the aft HOR from the bracket on the fan case (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-09-000-801).
   (6) Disconnect the bonding straps from the pylon (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-02-000-801).
   (7) Remove the three nuts (5) and (2) and three washers (6) and (3) from the forward, middle and aft hinges.
   (8) Install the 636-2000-19GSE FAN COWL HINGE BOLT THREAD PROTECTORS on the threads of the three bolts (7) and (4). Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
   (9) Remove of the bolt.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE THE BOLTS. THE FAN COWL DOOR CAN MOVE DOWN AND CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL BELOW THE FAN COWL DOOR.
     (a) Remove the bolt (7) from the aft hinge.
NOTE: If necessary, carefully use a DRIFT - PUNCH and HAMMER - NON METALLIC to remove the bolt (7) from the hinge.
     (b) Remove the bolt (4) from the forward hinge.
NOTE: If necessary, carefully use a DRIFT - PUNCH and HAMMER - NON METALLIC to remove the bolt (4) from the hinge.
WARNING: HAVE ANOTHER PERSON HOLD THE LEFT FAN COWL WHEN YOU REMOVE THE LAST PIN. THE LEFT FAN COWL WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 100 LBS (45.5 KG). IF THE LEFT FAN COWL MOVES SUDDENLY, INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
   (10) Have a second person hold the left fan cowl (1) and remove the bolt (7) from the middle hinge.
NOTE: If necessary, carefully use a DRIFT - PUNCH and HAMMER - NON METALLIC to remove the bolt (7) from the hinge.
   (11) Carefully lift and move the left fan cowl (1) away from the pylon.
     (a) Place the left fan cowl (1) on the 636-2000-18GSE FAN COWL DOLLY. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
Subtask 71-13-10-080-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
C. Removal of the Fan Cowl Sling
   (1) Remove the 636-2000-19GSE FAN COWL HINGE BOLT THREAD PROTECTORS from the left fan cowl (1). Refer to the instructions of the manufacturer of the sling.
   (2) Apply a thin layer of the anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the threads of the six screws (8).
   (3) Install the six screws (8) into the three hoist inserts on the left fan cowl (1).
   (4) TORQUE the six screws (8) to between 60.5 and 55 lbf.in (0.68 and 0.62 m.daN ) T.
   (5) Remove the
636-2000-19GSE FAN COWL HINGE BOLT THREAD PROTECTORS from the three bolts (7) and (4). Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
   (6) Installation of the protection covers:
CAUTION: INSTALL PROTECTION COVERS ON ALL THE OPENINGS IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
     (a) Make sure that you install all the necessary COVER - PROTECTION to prevent damage to the engine.
