Sampling of the Potable Water

TASK 38-10-00-281-001-A
Sampling of the Potable Water

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE EQUIPMENT YOU USE FOR THIS PROCEDURE IS CLEAN AND APPROVED FOR THE POTABLE WATER SYSTEM. IF NOT IT CAN CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE POTABLE WATER SYSTEM.
NOTE: The source from which the potable water is filled (for the use of servicing the potable water system) has drinking water quality. Refer to the national authority regulations.
NOTE: For the aircraft dispatch, it is not necessary to wait for the result of the sampling, if there are no other requirements specified by the local health authorities.
NOTE: If necessary, you can do the disinfection of the potable water system again.
1. Reason for the Job
To make sure that the water that you use to fill the potable water system has drinking water quality. Refer to the regulations of the local health authority.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 38-10-00-861-057-A
A. Energize the ground service network
(Ref. AMM TASK 24-42-00-861-001).
Subtask 38-10-00-010-060-A
B. Get access to the galleys and lavatories.
Subtask 38-10-00-613-058-A
C. Make sure that there is water in the potable water system, if necessary fill the potable water system (Ref. AMM TASK 12-15-38-613-001).
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT ALL WATER SAMPLES IN SAMPLING CONTAINERS WHICH THE LABORATORY SUPPLIES. THESE SAMPLING CONTAINERS ARE SPECIALLY PREPARED TO DO MICROBIOLOGICAL TESTS. IF YOU DO NOT USE THE CORRECT CONTAINERS, THIS CAN CAUSE INCORRECT LABORATORY RESULTS. THUS IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO KNOW THE LEVEL OF CONTAMINATION IN THE POTABLE WATER SYSTEM.
   (1) Before you fill the potable water system:
     (a) Fill a sampling container with water from the source that you use to fill the potable water system.
     (b) On a tag, record the location where and the date and time when you do the sampling procedure.
     (c) Attach the tag to the sampling container.
NOTE: Only approved personnel are permitted to do the water sampling procedure.
Subtask 38-10-00-614-060-A
D. Pressurize the potable water system (Ref. AMM TASK 38-10-00-614-001).
4. Procedure
Subtask 38-10-00-281-051-A
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT ALL WATER SAMPLES IN SAMPLING CONTAINERS WHICH THE LABORATORY SUPPLIES.
A. Get a Water Sample of the Potable Water System
NOTE: Only approved personnel are permitted to do the water sampling procedure.
   (1) Let an approved person get samples of the water in the potable water system:
  • from a galley that is as far as possible away from the potable water tank
  • from a lavatory that is as far as possible away from the potable water tank.
NOTE: When the nozzle assembly is not installed on the outlet of the water faucet, the water will flow horizontally out of the outlet.
   (2) Apply disinfectant to the nozzle assemblies of the water faucet:
     (a) Apply Disinfectant-Aircraft General - - (Material No.11AAA2) to the nozzle assemblies with a GUN - SPRAY and wait 3 minutes.
   (3) Set the sampling container in front of the lavatory water-faucet outlet, before you operate the faucet.
   (4) Carefully operate the water faucet for 3 min, then fill the clean BOTTLE - SAMPLE with water.
   (5) Seal the sampling containers.
   (6) Put a tag on the sampling containers:
     (a) On the tag, record:
       1 The aircraft registration
2 The system from which you got the sample
3 The location where you did the sampling procedure
4 The date and time when you did the sampling procedure.
   (7) Put the tag on the sampling containers.
   (8) Send all the water sampling containers to the hygienic institute for analysis.
Subtask 38-10-00-281-052-A
B. Water Quality Analysis
   (1) General germ rate
     (a) The standards for drinking water given by the national authority are mandatory.
     (b) AIRBUS recommends the concentration of germs as follows:
Table 1
germs
max. allowed concentration
N0. of germs increase at
22 deg.C (68 deg.F) for 44 hours
1000 / 1ml
1000 / 0.034 USfl.oz.
N0. of germs increase at
36 deg.C (96.8 deg.F) for 44 hours
100 / 1ml
100 / 0.034 USfl.oz.
NOTE: Tables 1 show the standards for drinking water which are recommended by AIRBUS.
   (2) Echerichia Coli and Coliform Bacteria
     (a) The standards for drinking water given by the national authority are mandatory.
     (b) AIRBUS recommend the concentration of the Echerichia Coli and Coliform Bacteria as follows:
  • There must be no germ of the type Echerichia Coli or Coliform Bacteria in 100ml (3.38 USfl.oz.).
   (3) If the sample analysis shows values that are higher than the values given in step (1) and (2), do the disinfection of the potable water system (Ref. AMM TASK 38-10-00-670-002).
Subtask 38-10-00-281-053-A
C. Water Quality Analysis (after disinfection with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) HERLISIL or H BIO T50)
   (1) If the microbiological analysis shows contamination of the potable water system (values that are above the recommended levels), do the disinfection within the recommended procedure of the potable water system (with Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) HERLISIL or H BIO T50) again (Ref. AMM TASK 38-10-00-670-002).
   (2) Flush the potable water three times with clean water to make sure that the potable water system is clean.
5. Close-up
Subtask 38-10-00-410-063-A
