4. Fault IsolationWARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE AFTER SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE CAN STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS WARNING, INJURY CAN OCCUR.
WARNING:
REFER TO THE MSDS FOR ALL MATERIAL USED AND THE MANUFACTURER'S SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL EQUIPMENT USED. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS WARNING, INJURY CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE ELECTRICAL POWER FROM THE EEC BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, DAMAGE TO THE EEC CAN OCCUR.
Subtask 71-00-00-810-107-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL A. General Troubleshooting Guidelines for Additional Troubleshooting Information
(1) Observed fault, flight deck effect, maintenance message guidelines for troubleshooting:
(a) The information listed in the troubleshooting procedures should be used as a guideline. The sequence of the troubleshooting steps can be accomplished based on operational experience.
(b) The Central Maintenance System (CMS) allows access to information from all aircraft systems Built-In Test Equipment (BITE), including the Electronic Engine Control (EEC).
(c) EEC-monitored faults are transmitted to the aircraft Centralized Fault Display Interface Unit (CFDIU). The Multipurpose Control & Display Unit (MCDU) allows interactive dialog with the EEC.
(d) During the initial evaluation of a fault, gather as much information as possible related to the problem. Pilot Report (PIREP), ground crew report, Post Flight Report (PFR), ground report, scheduled maintenance report and Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS) report are tools which can be used. Engine Health Monitoring (EHM) system trending data can also be used. Contact Pratt & Whitney for more information on the EHM data.
(e) The sequence of tasks in a troubleshooting procedure is based on how the system works and the probability that the action will result in correcting the fault. To avoid repeating work that was previously accomplished and to reduce the no fault found disposition of components, read through the entire procedure before you start any task.
(2) Maintenance messages
(a) Use the MCDU to interrogate the FADEC system faults AMM 73-21-00-710-806.
1 The PFR also provides useful information for Class 1 and 2 faults that occur in flight (the first engine start + 30 sec).
2 The ground report or scheduled maintenance report can also be used to find information for latched faults that are not recorded in the PFR. The ground report is used to view faults which occur before the PFR opens and after the PFR closes. The ground report is cleared when a new flight is entered.
(b) EEC-monitored faults are categorized into two types, intermittent faults and hard faults.
(c) Hard faults
1 Feedback type (wraparound, range/rate, disagree) maintenance messages that are present when the EEC is interrogated following a normal engine shutdown. This can be caused by a problem within a wiring harness or by a problem with the engine's FADEC controlled component. In some cases, the EEC may be the cause.
2 Out-of-position type maintenance messages can be caused by a sticking or stuck external linkage or actuator. There may be other issues causing the problem that are addressed by the specific troubleshooting procedures.
3 The MCDU on the flight deck can be used to perform a series of interactive engine system tests to assist with troubleshooting. The tests can also be used for repair confirmation as applicable. The tests are as follows:
a EEC operation test (self test) AMM 73-21-00-710-806.
b Operational test of the engine actuators AMM 73-21-00-710-809.
c Igniters test AMM 74-00-00-710-802.
d Thrust reverser cycling test AMM 78-31-00-710-805.
e Hydraulic pump depressurization test with the MCDU AMM 73-21-00-710-808.
f Ground harness test AMM 73-21-00-710-810.
4 A detailed wiring harness inspection can be performed by using the following procedure if time permits. Go to the procedure for the visual examination of the FADEC system wiring harness (ground harness check) AMM 73-21-00-200-805.
5 Do a repair confirmation as specified in the troubleshooting procedure before you return the engine to service. This step should be performed to make sure that you have corrected the problem. In some cases, an engine run or subsequent flight may be necessary to confirm that the troubleshooting steps which were performed have fixed the problem.
6 To correct a maintenance message, one or more engine wiring harnesses may need to be removed or replaced. If a wiring harness that is replaced affects another system that requires an engine run to confirm the fault, do an engine run to make sure that no additional engine system faults have been set.
(d) Intermittent faults
1 Feedback type (wraparound, range/rate, disagree) maintenance messages that usually will not repeat when the EEC is interrogated following normal engine shutdown. This type of fault is most often caused by a problem within a wiring harness or connector. Go to the procedure related to the component and harness intermittent troubleshooting procedure for guidance troubleshooting intermittent faults (Ref. TSM TASK 71-00-00-810-835).
2 Out-of-position (track check) type maintenance messages can be caused by a sticking external linkage or sticking actuator. They can also be caused by a reduction in servo pressure or by wiring problems. Go to the procedure related to the component and harness intermittent troubleshooting procedure for guidance troubleshooting intermittent faults (Ref. TSM TASK 71-00-00-810-835).
3 Do a repair confirmation as specified in the troubleshooting procedure before you return the engine to service. This step should be performed to make sure that you have corrected the problem. In some cases, an engine run AMM 73-21-00-710-807 or subsequent flight may be necessary to confirm that the troubleshooting steps which were performed have fixed the problem.
4 To correct a maintenance message, one or more engine wiring harnesses may need to be removed or replaced. If a wiring harness that is replaced affects another system that requires an engine run to confirm the fault, do an engine run to make sure that no additional engine system faults have been set AMM 73-21-00-710-807.
