Inspection of Starter Magnetic Chip Detector
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING:
DO NOT LET ENGINE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN FOR A LONG TIME. FLUSH THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN WITH WATER. THE OIL IS POISONOUS AND CAN GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN AND INTO YOUR BODY.
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.

A. Safety Precautions
(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
(3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

A. Examine the starter for oil leaks
(1) If leaks are found around the oil drain plug, replace the drain plug seal ring (Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-13-911-010) and service the starter motor (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-80-600-011).
(2) If leaks are found around the starter housing mounting flange and V-band clamp, reject the starter.

(2) If leaks are found around the starter housing mounting flange and V-band clamp, reject the starter.
B. Remove the magnetic chip detector (MCD)
(1) Remove the lockwire which safeties the MCD.
(2) Remove the MCD (1) from the drain plug (3) in the starter.

(2) Remove the MCD (1) from the drain plug (3) in the starter.
NOTE: Do not loosen the drain plug (3), hold it with a spanner when you remove the MCD (1).
C. Examine the debris on the MCD
(1) Examine the debris on the MCD:
(a) Accept the starter if:
1 There are no chips or slivers which are sufficiently large to span the clearance of the magnet.
2 There are no chips or slivers larger than 0.1 in. (2.54 mm).
1 There is a chip or sliver larger than 0.10 in. (2.54mm).
(2) Remove the debris from the MCD and rub it between your fingers
(a) Accept the starter if:
1 There are no chips or slivers larger than 0.10 in. (2.54 mm).
(b) Reject the starter if:
1 There is a chip or sliver larger than 0.10 in. (2.54 mm).

1 There are no chips or slivers which are sufficiently large to span the clearance of the magnet.
2 There are no chips or slivers larger than 0.1 in. (2.54 mm).
NOTE: Small metal particles on the MCD can collect along the magnetic lines of force and look like metal slivers.
(b) Reject the starter if: 1 There is a chip or sliver larger than 0.10 in. (2.54mm).

E. Install the MCD
(2) Install a new AIPC 80-13-41-80-220 SEAL RING (2) on to the MCD (Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-13-911-010).
(3) Install the MCD (1) in the drain plug (3) on the starter.
(4) TORQUE the MCD to between 15 and 5 lbf.in (0.17 and 0.06 m.daN )
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013)
(5) Safety the MCD with lockwire (Material No.V02-126) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014)
5. Close-upCAUTION:
BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU INSTALL THE DRAIN PLUG AND MAGNETIC CHIP DETECTOR. MAKE SURE THAT THE TORQUE VALUES ARE NOT MORE THAN THE MAXIMUM PERMITTED LIMITS. THIS WILL HELP TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION HOUSING THREADS.
(1) Remove and discard the seal ring (2) from the MCD. (2) Install a new AIPC 80-13-41-80-220 SEAL RING (2) on to the MCD (Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-13-911-010).
