4. Procedure
Subtask 70-11-50-110-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Local Swab or Wipe Cleaning with Solvent
   (1) General
CAUTION: DO NOT USE HALOGENATED HYDROCARBONS OR METHANOL SOLVENTS BECAUSE THEY CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO PARTS AT ENGINE OPERATING TEMPERATURES.
     (a) This procedure specifies the method to local swab or wipe clean parts with solvent, and specifies the solvents that are permitted. This procedure and the specified solvents must not be used for immersion cleaning.
     (b) The permitted solvents are divided into three types:
1 Low flash point, high-vapor-pressure solvents
a These are solvents that have a flash point lower than 140 deg.F (60.00 deg.C) and a vapor pressure greater than 45 mm Hg.
2 Low flash point, low-vapor-pressure solvents
a These are solvents that have a flash point lower than 140 deg.F (60.00 deg.C) and a vapor pressure lower than or equal to 45 mm Hg.
3 High flash point, low-vapor-pressure solvents
a These are solvents that have a flash point greater than 140 deg.F (60.00 deg.C) and a vapor pressure lower than, or equal to, 45 mm Hg.
   (2) Method to solvent wipe clean.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE SIZED CHEESECLOTH. IT CONTAINS RESIN BINDERS THAT CAN DISSOLVE IN SOLVENTS AND:
  • CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE BOND SURFACES
  • PREVENT A GOOD ADHESIVE BOND.
CAUTION: DO NOT TOUCH THE OPENING OF THE SOLVENT CONTAINER OR THE SOLVENT IN THE SOLVENT CONTAINER WITH THE WIPING CLOTH. THIS CAN CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE SOLVENT, WHICH CAN CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE COMPONENT SURFACES AND PREVENT A GOOD BOND WITH ADHESIVES OR PAINTS.
     (a) Put a sufficient quantity of one of the applicable solvents onto a clean lint free cloth (Material No.V02-099) or V02-349bleached cheesecloth (new) to make the cloth moist with the solvent.
     (b) Wipe or swab the part carefully with the moist cloth. Make sure that the part surface is wet with the solvent.
   (3) Drying.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR TO DRY THE PART BEFORE THE ADHESIVE BONDING OR PAINTING BECAUSE COMPRESSED AIR CAN CONTAIN OIL VAPORS THAT CAN CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE CLEANED SURFACE.
     (a) Let the solvent evaporate in the air.
   (4) Make sure that the part is fully dry. Do not touch the cleaned surface.
NOTE: For parts that are to be bonded, you must wear GLOVES - COTTON, LINT-FREE, CLEAN when you touch the parts to avoid contamination of the surface.
