Removal of the Starter Magnetic-Chip-Collector Assembly

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE AND THE ADJACENT COMPONENTS AFTER ENGINE SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE, THE ENGINE OIL AND THE ADJACENT COMPONENTS CAN STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, INJURY CAN OCCUR.

A. Safety Precautions
(1) Do the procedure to prevent engine motoring

B. Get Access
(1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-802):

(2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) in position.

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser for Ground Maintenance
Subtask 80-11-02-010-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL WARNING:
YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
(1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805). D. Get Access
(1) Open the right thrust-reverser cowl-doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-802):

4. Procedure(1) Open the right thrust-reverser cowl-doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-802):
(a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 1)
452AR.
(b) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 2)
462AR.
CAUTION:
WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
Subtask 80-11-02-020-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL A. Removal of the Starter Magnetic-Chip-Collector Assembly
(1) POST SB C-80-00-0006A (with chip collector probe):
(a) Find the chip collector assembly installed in the bottom of the starter, rear of the main gearbox, at the 5 o'clock position.
(2) To remove only the chip collector (1) and not the valve (2) (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-00-200-801).
(3) Put the CONTAINER 20L (5 USGAL) under the starter to catch the starter oil.
(4) Push the chip collector (1) in and turn counterclockwise to remove it.
(a) Replace the chip collector (1) with a serviceable assembly, if the starter leaks oil through the valve (2).
(b) Examine the chip collector (1) for contamination. If you see contamination, do an inspection of the chip collector (1) for oil contamination (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-00-200-801).
(c) Remove and discard the packing (3) from the chip collector (1).
(a) Drain the oil. Do not use the starter drain oil again.
(b) Remove and discard the packing (5) from the valve (2).
(c) Remove and discard the packing (4) from the inside of the valve (2).
(6) Installation of the protection covers:
(1) POST SB C-80-00-0006A (with chip collector probe):
(a) Find the chip collector assembly installed in the bottom of the starter, rear of the main gearbox, at the 5 o'clock position.
(2) To remove only the chip collector (1) and not the valve (2) (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-00-200-801).
(3) Put the CONTAINER 20L (5 USGAL) under the starter to catch the starter oil.
(4) Push the chip collector (1) in and turn counterclockwise to remove it.
(a) Replace the chip collector (1) with a serviceable assembly, if the starter leaks oil through the valve (2).
(b) Examine the chip collector (1) for contamination. If you see contamination, do an inspection of the chip collector (1) for oil contamination (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-00-200-801).
(c) Remove and discard the packing (3) from the chip collector (1).
NOTE: A white thermal insulator is located near the packing (3) on the chip collector (1). This is not a packing and should not be removed.
(5) Remove the valve (2) from the starter. (a) Drain the oil. Do not use the starter drain oil again.
(b) Remove and discard the packing (5) from the valve (2).
(c) Remove and discard the packing (4) from the inside of the valve (2).
(6) Installation of the protection covers:
CAUTION:
INSTALL PROTECTION COVERS ON ALL THE OPENINGS IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
(a) Make sure that you install the COVER - PROTECTION as necessary to prevent damage to the engine.
