A. Safety Precautions
WARNING: IF IT IS NECESSARY TO ENERGIZE THE AIRCRAFT FOR A MAINTENANCE WORK WHILE YOU DO THIS MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE, MAKE SURE THAT ONLY EXTERNAL POWER IS USED. THE USE OF APU OR ENGINE POWER CAN CAUSE PRESSURIZED AIR LEAKAGE IN THE PNEUMATIC SYSTEM, AND INJURY CAN OCCUR.
   (1) Do the procedure to prevent engine motoring and to stop the electrical supply to the Electronic Engine Control (EEC)
(Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-832)
   (2) On OVERHEAD CTL & IND panel 25VU:
  • Make sure that the ON legend of the APU MASTER SW pushbutton switch is off.
  • Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to start the APU.
   (3) On AIR COND panel 30VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG 1(2) BLEED pushbutton switch is released (the OFF legend is on).
     (b) Make sure that the APU BLEED pushbutton switch is released (the ON legend is off).
     (c) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the pneumatic system.
     (d) Make sure that the X-BLEED selector switch is in the SHUT position.
   (4) On the HP ground connector:
     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to pressurize the pneumatic system.

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-802):

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser for Ground Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805).

D. Get Access
   (1) Open the right thrust-reverser cowl-door (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-802):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 1)
452AR.
     (b) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 2)
462AR.
4. Procedure
CAUTION: WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
Subtask 80-11-01-020-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Removal of the Starter
   (1) Find the starter (1) located approximately at the 5 o'clock position, attached to the main gearbox.
F Removal of the Starter ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (2) Drain the oil P03-001lubricant, aircraft turbine engine from the starter (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-00-680-801).
   (3) Remove the intake duct (2) from the starter (1) as follows:
     (a) Disconnect the wiring harness (WC08) connector (P30) from the starter (1) with the PLIERS - JAWED, SOFT.

     (b) Remove the wiring harness (WC08) cable from the spring clip on the intake duct (2).
     (c) Remove the igniter cables from the spring clip on the intake duct (2).
     (d) Remove the two bolts (3) and the two clamps (4) that attach the flow divider-valve cooling-tube to the intake duct (2).
     (e) Remove the bolt (18) and the nut (19) that connects the intake duct (2) to the support rod.
F Removal of the Starter ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (f) Loosen the coupling (16) on the Starter Air Valve (SAV) and the intake duct (2).
     (g) Remove the coupling (16) from the SAV and the intake duct (2).
     (h) Loosen the coupling (16) on the starter (1) and the intake duct (2).
     (i) Remove the coupling (16) from the starter (1) and the intake duct (2).
     (j) Remove the intake duct (2).
     (k) Remove and discard the seals (17).
   (4) Remove the starter (1) from the main gearbox as follows:
     (a) Install the detail support base to the PWA106340 JACK, HYDRAULIC - VFG, EDP, FUEL PUMP, STARTER with the two detail cap screws and the detail cap screw.
NOTE: It is permitted to use PWA80611 JACK-HYDRAULIC jack as an alternative if PWA106340 JACK, HYDRAULIC - VFG, EDP, FUEL PUMP, STARTER hydraulic lift is not available.
     (b) Attach the PWA211284 ADAPTER, INSTALLATION to the support base with the four detail cap screws.
     (c) Align the PWA211284 ADAPTER, INSTALLATION to the starter (1).
     (d) Adjust the adapter and the hydraulic lift:
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU APPLY ONLY SUFFICIENT PRESSURE WITH THE JACK TO HOLD THE WEIGHT OF THE STARTER. TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON THE STARTER OR FAILURE TO HOLD THE STARTER CORRECTLY CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TRANSFER TUBE.
       1 Adjust the PWA211284 ADAPTER, INSTALLATION and PWA106340 JACK, HYDRAULIC - VFG, EDP, FUEL PUMP, STARTER to support the weight of the starter (1).
     (e) Attach the starter (1) to the PWA211284 ADAPTER, INSTALLATION with the detail strap.
F Removal of the Starter ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (f) Loosen the coupling (15) that connects the starter (1) to the main gearbox starter pad.
F Removal of the Starter ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (g) Disengage the coupling (15).
     (h) Remove the coupling (15).
     (i) Move the starter (1) rearward to disengage the starter drive gear shaft from the gearbox.
     (j) Remove the starter (1) from the gearbox with the PWA106340 JACK, HYDRAULIC - VFG, EDP, FUEL PUMP, STARTER.
     (k) Lower the PWA106340 JACK, HYDRAULIC - VFG, EDP, FUEL PUMP, STARTER.
     (l) Remove the ring (33) from the main gearbox.
NOTE: If the starter is to be replaced and the transfer tube remained in the gearbox during the removal of the starter, there is no need to remove the transfer tube from the gearbox.
     (m) Remove the transfer tube (32) from the main gearbox.
     (n) Remove and discard the two packings (30) and (31) from the transfer tube (32).
     (o) Remove and discard the packing (34) from the starter-output shaft packing-groove.
     (p) Remove and discard the packing (35) from the starter flange.
   (5) Examine the assembly for foreign objects, damage, and correct assembly.
   (6) Installation of the protection covers:
CAUTION: INSTALL PROTECTION COVERS ON ALL THE OPENINGS IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
     (a) Make sure that you install COVER - PROTECTION as necessary to prevent damage to the engine.
