A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU, make sure that a WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU, make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off. Make sure that a WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

A. Install the control rod

SBE 72-0406: Actuating mechanism HPC variable vanes - introduction of a fully machined from bar crankshaft assembly.
(1) For the actuator control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the actuator ram and the crankshaft.
(b) Attach the control rod to the actuator ram with the bolt (38), the washer (40) and the nut (39).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (37), the washer (36) and the nut (35).
(d) TORQUE the nuts (35) and (39) to between 370 and 290 lbf.in (4.18 and 3.28 m.daN )
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013).
(2) For the VIGV control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the VIGV unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the spacer (43) and the nut (41).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (44) and the nut (46).
(d) TORQUE the nuts (41) to between 300 and 225 lbf.in (3.39 and 2.54 m.daN )
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013).
(e) Safety the nut (41) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-010 COTTER PIN (42) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(f) TORQUE the nut (46) to between 210 and 170 lbf.in (2.37 and 1.92 m.daN )
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013).
(g) Safety the nut (46) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-040 COTTER PIN (45) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (4) and the nut (3).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (5), the spacers (6) and (7), the washer (8) and the nut (10).
(d) TORQUE the nut (3) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(e) TORQUE the nut (10) to between 210 and 170 lbf.in (2.37 and 1.92 m.daN )

(f) Safety the nut (10) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-160 COTTER PIN (9) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(4) For the stage 4 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 4 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (2) and the nut (1).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (11), the spacers (12) and (13), the washer (14) and the nut (15).
(d) TORQUE the nut (1) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(e) TORQUE the nut (15) to between 210 and 170 lbf.in (2.37 and 1.92 m.daN )

(f) Safety the nut (15) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-280 COTTER PIN (16) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(5) Pre SBE 72-0366: For the stage 5 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 5 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (47) and the nut (48).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (49), the spacers (34) and (50), the washer (33) and the nut (32).
(d) TORQUE the nut (48) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(e) TORQUE the nut (32) to between 210 and 170 lbf.in (2.37 and 1.92 m.daN )

(f) Safety the nut (32) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-400 COTTER PIN (51) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(6) SBE 72-0406: For the stage 5 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod in to position between the crankshaft and the stage 5 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (47) and the nut (48).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the retaining pin (54) and attach the retaining pin to the crankshaft with the bolt (52) and the washer (53). Refer to the view at J.
(d) TORQUE the nut (48) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(e) TORQUE the bolt (52) to between 45 and 36 lbf.in (0.51 and 0.41 m.daN )

(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (4) and the nut (3).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (5), the spacers (6) and (7), the washer (8) and the nut (10).
(d) TORQUE the nut (3) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the VIGV unison ring.

(d) TORQUE the nuts (41) to between 300 and 225 lbf.in (3.39 and 2.54 m.daN )

(e) Safety the nut (41) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-010 COTTER PIN (42) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(f) TORQUE the nut (59) to between 210 and 170 lbf.in (2.37 and 1.92 m.daN )

(g) Safety the nut (59) with a new AIPC 72-41-34-80-040 COTTER PIN (45) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (4) and the nut (3).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (5), the spacers (6) and (7), the washer (8) and the nut (10).
(d) TORQUE the nut (3) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (47) and the nut (48).

(a) Put the control rod into position between the actuator ram and the crankshaft.
(b) Attach the control rod to the actuator ram with the bolt (38), the washer (40) and the nut (39).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (37), the washer (36) and the nut (35).
(d) TORQUE the nuts (35) and (39) to between 370 and 290 lbf.in (4.18 and 3.28 m.daN )

(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the VIGV unison ring.

(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (4) and the nut (3).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the bolt (5), the spacers (6) and (7), the washer (8) and the nut (10).
(d) TORQUE the nut (3) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (2) and the nut (1).

(d) TORQUE the nut (1) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(5) For the stage 5 control rod:
(a) Put the control rod into position between the crankshaft and the stage 5 unison ring.
(b) Attach the control rod to the unison ring with the bolt (47) and the nut (48).
(c) Attach the control rod to the crankshaft with the retaining pin (54) and attach the retaining pin to the crankshaft with the bolt (52) and the washer (53).Refer to the view at J.
(d) TORQUE the nut (48) to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(1) If a control rod bolt is not easy to install, adjust the applicable control rod as follows:

(a) Remove the wire that safeties the locknuts of the control rod.

(b) Remove the wire that safeties the locknuts and the locking washers of the control rod.

(c) Loosen the locknuts of the control rod.
(e) TORQUE the two locknuts to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )

(f) Make sure that the control rod ends are aligned to less than 5 degrees.
(g) Make sure that the control rod ends are in safety.

(a) Remove the wire that safeties the locknuts of the control rod.

(c) Loosen the locknuts of the control rod.
NOTE: One of the locknuts has a left hand thread.
(d) Turn the center part of the control rod, to adjust the length of the control rod, until the bolt can be easily installed. (e) TORQUE the two locknuts to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013). (f) Make sure that the control rod ends are aligned to less than 5 degrees.
(g) Make sure that the control rod ends are in safety.

(i) Safety the locknuts and the locking washers to the control rod ends with lockwire (Material No.V02-126) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).

(2) Remove the rig pins CAUTION:
YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE RIG PINS ARE REMOVED BEFORE THE ENGINE IS OPERATED. THE VSV MECHANISM WILL BE DAMAGED IF THE PINS ARE NOT REMOVED AND THE ENGINE IS OPERATED.
(a) Remove all the rig pins from the unison rings, the crankshaft and the actuator ram. D. Adjust the VIGV control rod, if necessary
(1) If a control rod bolt is not easy to install, adjust the applicable control rod as follows:
(a) Remove the wire that safeties the locknuts and the locking washers of the control rod.
(b) Loosen the locknuts of the control rod.
(d) TORQUE the two locknuts to between 220 and 180 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.03 m.daN )
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013).
(e) Make sure that the control rod ends are aligned to less than 5 degrees.
(f) Make sure that the control rod ends are in safety.
(g) Safety the locknuts and the locking washers to the control rod ends with lockwire (Material No.V02-126) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
Subtask 75-32-42-820-076-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) If a control rod bolt is not easy to install, adjust the applicable control rod as follows:

(d) TORQUE the two locknuts to between 220 and 205 lbf.in (2.49 and 2.32 m.daN )

(e) Make sure that the control rod ends are aligned to less than 5 degrees.
(f) Make sure that the control rod ends are in safety.
(g) Safety the locknuts.
5. Close-up(1) If a control rod bolt is not easy to install, adjust the applicable control rod as follows:
(a) Remove the wire that safeties the locknuts of the control rod.
(b) Loosen the locknuts of the control rod.
