Removal of the Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) Oil Cooler


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: WHEN YOU REMOVE THE IDG OIL COOLER, BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET THE REMAINING OIL ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO YOU.

3. Job Set-up

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch, and
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
4. Procedure
Subtask 73-11-50-020-055-A
A. Removal of the Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) Oil Cooler
   (1) Put the CONTAINER 5 L (1.32 USGAL) below the IDG oil cooler (1).
   (2) Drain the IDG oil cooler (1).
     (a) Drain the oil through the IDG drain plugs (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-24-680-803).
     (b) Drain the fuel through the fuel pump drain plugs (Ref. AMM TASK 73-11-05-000-801).
   (3) Disconnection of the oil tubes from the IDG oil cooler (1):
WARNING: USE PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT. USE THE ENGINE OIL IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. ENGINE OIL IS TOXIC.
     (a) Remove the four bolts (3) from the oil tube (2).
     (b) Disconnect the oil tube (2) from the IDG oil cooler (1).
     (c) Remove and discard the gasket (4) from the oil tube (2).
     (d) Remove the four bolts (6) from the oil tube (5).
     (e) Disconnect the oil tube (5) from the IDG oil cooler (1).
     (f) Remove and discard the gasket (7) from the oil tube (5).
   (4) Disconnection of the fuel tubes from the IDG oil cooler (1):
WARNING: WHEN YOU USE ENGINE FUEL, USE PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT AND DO IT IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. ENGINE FUEL IS TOXIC.
     (a) Remove the four bolts (9) from the fuel tube (8).
     (b) Disconnect the fuel tube (8) from the IDG oil cooler (1).
     (c) Remove and discard the gasket (10) from the fuel tube (8).
     (d) Remove the four bolts (12) from the fuel tube (11).
     (e) Disconnect the fuel tube (11) from the IDG oil cooler (1).
     (f) Remove and discard the gasket (13) from the fuel tube (11).
   (5) Remove the four bolts (14) with the four captive washers that attach the IDG oil cooler (1) to the four mounting brackets (16).
   (6) Remove the IDG oil cooler (1) from the four mounting brackets (16).
   (7) Install the COVER - PROTECTION and the CAP - PROTECTION on all the openings, tubes, hoses and connectors.
   (8) Remove the CONTAINER 5 L (1.32 USGAL) from below the IDG oil cooler (1).
