Visual Inspection of the Flow Path Fairing Half Ring


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
1. Reason for the Job
This procedure gives the criteria for the visual inspection of the flow path fairing half ring
NOTE: The inspection criteria below are applicable after the removal of the high metal.
NOTE: You can use equivalent alternatives for standard tools, equipment and consumable materials.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 72-21-03-941-053-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).
   (3) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) in position.
   (4) Install a MAT - PROTECTIVE in the lower half of the inlet cowl.

B. Get Access
   (1) Remove the front spinner and fan blades only if necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-40-000-801) (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-20-000-801).
4. Procedure

A. Visual Inspection of the two Flow Path Fairing Half Rings
   (1) Do a visual inspection of the visible areas of the two flow path fairing half rings (1). Refer to the table that follows for the inspection area.

A.Cracks, tears
Not serviceable
Replace the flow path fairing half ring (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-400-801).
B.Scratches
Any number up to 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) in depth.

C.Dents, nicks
Any number up to 0.004 in. (0.1 mm) in depth.

D.Missing surface coating (sulfuric anodization)
Serviceable, if not more than 10 per cent of the total area.

E.Erosion
Not serviceable
Replace the flow path fairing half ring (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-400-801).
2.Visual inspection of the attachment areas (2)


A.Cracks, tears
Not serviceable
Replace the flow path fairing half ring (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-400-801).
B.Scratches
Not serviceable

C.Thread marks or hole ovalization in the cylindrical area
Permitted up to 0.008 in. (0.2 mm) in depth.

D.Missing surface coating (sulfuric anodization)
Any amount.

E.Pitting, corrosion
Not serviceable
Replace the flow path fairing half ring (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-03-400-801).
F.Dents, nicks
Not serviceable

G.Contact marks
Any number up to 0.0008 in. (0.02 mm)in depth.

5. Close-up

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Install the fan blades and the front spinner (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-20-400-801) (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-40-400-801).
   (3) Remove the MAT - PROTECTIVE from the lower half of the inlet cowl.
   (4) Remove the access platform(s).
   (5) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
