Removal of the Borescope Plugs


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE AFTER SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE CAN STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, INJURY CAN OCCUR.

Use this procedure to remove the Low Pressure Compressor (LPC), High Pressure Compressor (HPC), Diffuser Case, High Pressure Turbine (HPT), Turbine Intermediate Case (TIC) and Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) borescope plugs.

   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-802):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 1)

   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) in position.

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser for Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805).

   (1) Open the thrust reverser cowl-doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-802):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 1)

4. Procedure
Subtask 72-00-00-020-088-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Removal of the Borescope Plugs
CAUTION: WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
   (1) Find the three LPC borescope plugs (1), (2) and (4) on the LPC at the 2 o'clock position. See the figure:

NOTE: LPC front case P/N 5377500-01 will have the LPC-1 plug in the 8 o'clock position.
   (2) Remove the LPC borescope plugs as follows:
     (a) Remove the right side fan exit liner segments (Ref. AMM TASK 72-21-08-000-801).
     (b) Remove the AP LPC-1 PLUG (2) and the cup washer (3) located at the 2 o'clock position to view the LPC variable inlet guide vanes and 1st stage blades.
NOTE: LPC front case P/N 5377500-01 will have the LPC-1 plug in the 8 o'clock position.
     (c) Remove the AP LPC-2 PLUG (1) and the cup washer (3) located at the 2 o'clock position to view the 1st stage vanes and 2nd stage blades.
     (d) Remove the AP LPC-3 PLUG (4) and cup washer (3) located at the 2 o'clock position to view the 2nd stage vanes and 3rd stage blades.
   (3) Find the eight HPC borescope plugs (14), (15), (16), (26), (36), (37), (38) and (39) on the HPC at approximately the 2 o'clock to 4 o'clock positions. See the figure:
   (4) Remove the HPC borescope plugs as follows:
CAUTION: WAIT UNTIL THE TEMPERATURE OF THE HPC INTERNAL CAVITY IS LESS THAN 150 DEG.F (65.6 DEG.C) BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE HPC BORESCOPE PLUGS. CASE MISALIGNMENT CAN CAUSE THE HPC BORESCOPE PLUGS TO BREAK AND DAMAGE TO THE HPC CAN OCCUR.
     (a) Remove the AP HPC-1 PLUG (14) located at the 3 o'clock position to view the HPC inlet guide vanes and 1st stage rotor.
     (b) Remove the AP HPC-2 PLUG (15) located at the 2 o'clock position to view the HPC 1st stage stator and 2nd stage rotor.
     (c) Remove the AP HPC-3 PLUG (26) located at the 4 o'clock position to view the HPC 2nd stage stator and 3rd stage rotor.
     (d) Remove the AP HPC-4 PLUG (16) located at the 2 o'clock position to view the HPC 3rd stage stator and 4th stage rotor.
     (e) Remove the AP HPC-5 PLUG (37) located at the 3 o'clock position to view the HPC 4th stage stator and 5th stage rotor.
     (f) Remove the AP HPC-6 PLUG (36) located at the 2:30 o'clock position to view the HPC 5th stage stator and 6th stage rotor.
     (g) Remove the AP HPC-7 PLUG (38) located at the 2:30 o'clock position to view the HPC 6th stage stator and 7th stage rotor.
     (h) Removal of the AP HPC-8 PLUG
CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE THE HPC-8 AND DIFF-1 PLUGS AT THE SAME TIME WHEN YOU DO A BORESCOPE INSPECTION. REMOVE ONE PLUG AT A TIME AND THEN REINSTALL IT WHEN THE BORESCOPE INSPECTION IS COMPLETED. THE PLUGS HAVE SIMILAR SIZES. IF YOU DO NOT INSTALL THEM AT THE CORRECT LOCATION, THIS CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE AND LOSS IN ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
       1 Remove the AP HPC-8 PLUG (39) located at the 3 o'clock position to view the HPC 7th stage stator and 8th stage rotor.

PRE SB C72-00-0043A (Config-1 Initial Design Configuration)

   (5) Remove the diffuser case borescope plug as follows: see the figure:
NOTE: The igniter plug holes can also be used for diffuser borescope inspection.
     (a) Find the diffuser case borescope plug (49) on the diffuser case at approximately the 3 o'clock position.
     (b) Removal of the AP DIFF-1 PLUG:
CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE THE HPC-8 AND DIFF-1 PLUGS AT THE SAME TIME WHEN YOU DO A BORESCOPE INSPECTION. REMOVE ONE PLUG AT A TIME AND THEN REINSTALL IT WHEN THE BORESCOPE INSPECTION IS COMPLETED. THE PLUGS HAVE SIMILAR SIZES. IF YOU DO NOT INSTALL THEM AT THE CORRECT LOCATION, THIS CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE AND LOSS IN ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
       1 Remove the AP DIFF-1 PLUG (49) located at the 3 o'clock position to view the combustion chamber inner and outer bulkhead, fuel nozzles and 1st stage stator.

POST SB C72-00-0043A (Config-2 Assembly Durability Improvement Configuration)

   (6) Remove the diffuser case borescope plug as follows:
NOTE: The igniter plug holes can also be used for diffuser borescope inspection.
     (a) Find the diffuser case borescope plugs (49) and (73) on the diffuser case at approximately the 3 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions. See the figures:
     (b) Removal of the AP DIFF-1 PLUG and the AP DIFF-2 PLUG:
CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE THE HPC-8 AND DIFF-1 PLUGS AT THE SAME TIME WHEN YOU DO A BORESCOPE INSPECTION. REMOVE ONE PLUG AT A TIME AND THEN REINSTALL IT WHEN THE BORESCOPE INSPECTION IS COMPLETED. THE PLUGS HAVE SIMILAR SIZES. IF YOU DO NOT INSTALL THEM AT THE CORRECT LOCATION, THIS CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE AND LOSS IN ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
       1 Remove the AP DIFF-1 PLUG (49) located at the 3 o'clock position to view the combustion chamber inner and outer bulkhead, fuel nozzles and 1st stage stator. See the figure:
       2 Remove the AP DIFF-2 PLUG (73) located at the 10 o'clock position to view the HPC 7th and 8th stage heat shield. See the figure:

   (7) Find the HPT borescope plug (50) on the HPT at approximately the 5 o'clock position. See the figure:
   (8) Remove the HPT borescope plug as follows:
     (a) Remove the AP HPT-1 PLUG (50) located at the 5 o'clock position to view the HPT 1st stage rotor, 2nd stage stator and 2nd stage rotor.
   (9) Find the TIC borescope plug (60) on the HPT at approximately the 1:30 o'clock position. See the figure:
   (10) Remove the TIC borescope plug as follows:
     (a) Remove the AP TIC-1 PLUG (60) located at the 1:30 o'clock position to view the HPT 2nd stage rotor and LPT 1st stage rotor.
   (11) Find the two LPT borescope plugs (61) and (62) on the LPT at approximately the 2:30 o'clock position. See the figure:
   (12) Remove the LPT borescope plugs as follows:
     (a) Remove the AP LPT-1 (61) located at the 2:30 o'clock position to view the LPT 1st stage rotor, 1st stage stator and 2nd stage rotor.
     (b) Remove the AP LPT-2 (62) located at the 2:30 o'clock position to view the LPT 2nd stage rotor, 2nd stage stator and 3rd stage rotor.
   (13) Installation of the protection covers
CAUTION: INSTALL PROTECTION COVERS ON ALL THE OPENINGS IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
     (a) Make sure that you install all of the necessary COVER - PROTECTION to prevent damage to the engine.
