Removal of the Elevator

CAUTION: DO NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACES. THE COMPONENTS ARE MADE OF CARBONFIBER REINFORCED PLASTIC.
CAUTION: THIS PART IS A REMOVABLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENT (RSC), WHICH CAN BE MOVED BETWEEN AIRCRAFT. THUS IT CAN HAVE DIFFERENT OPERATION CONDITIONS AND A DIFFERENT LIFE RECORD (FLIGHT HOURS/FLIGHT CYCLES/CALENDAR) FROM THE AIRCRAFT IT IS INSTALLED ON OR REMOVED FROM. THE OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SPECIFIC TRACKING AND CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS OF REMOVABLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS. INCORRECT MAINTENANCE OF THESE COMPONENTS CAN CAUSE A RISK FOR THE FLIGHT SAFETY.

   (1) Put the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING in the CAPT and F/O side stick controllers.

E. Safety Precautions
   (1) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in the flight compartment to tell persons not to operate the flight controls.
   (2) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the hydraulic systems.
   (3) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT)-ADJUSTABLE in position at zone 334 for the left hand elevator and/or zone 344 for the right hand elevator.

   (1) Open the THS lower trailing edge access panels of the horizontal stabilizer 334BB 344BB 334DB 344DB 334FB 344FB 334GB 344GB 334HB 344HB (Ref. AMM TASK 55-13-11-000-001).

G. Hoisting Lugs
   (1) Remove the hoisting point cover patches (Ref. AMM TASK 11-00-00-000-004).
   (2) Remove the hoist point plugs (10).
   (3) Install the hoisting lugs.

H. Attach Support Equipment
   (1) Put the CRANE HEIGHT 15 M (50 FT) into position.
   (2) Attach the 98D27309008000 SLING-LIFTING, ELEVATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION or the 98D55209004000 SLING, REM.-INST.- ELEVATOR to the hoisting points and to the crane.
   (3) Operate the crane and slowly tighten the sling cables.
4. Procedure
Subtask 27-34-41-020-053-C
A. Removal of the Elevator
   (1) Disconnect the bonding straps (elevator side).
     (a) Remove the nuts (18), the washers (20) and the bolts (21) and disconnect the bonding straps (19).
   (2) Disconnect the control rod (24) from the elevator position transducer-unit (Ref. AMM TASK 27-92-13-000-001).
     (a) Make sure that the disconnected end of the control rod (24) is safetied to the aircraft structure at BR2 with the TIE WRAP(S).
   (3) Remove the control rod (24):
     (a) Remove and discard the cotter pin (25).
     (b) Remove the nut (26) and the washer (27).
       1 Make marks on the end of the control rod (24) disconnected from the bracket (28) (elevator side) for the installation procedure.
     (c) Remove the bolt (22) and the bush (23) and then disconnect and hold the control rod (24).
       1 Make sure that you do not cause damage to the harness connectors of the elevator servo-control units.
     (d) Cut the TIE WRAP(S) that safety the end of the control rod (24) and remove the control rod (24).
   (4) Disconnect the elevator servo-control units (elevator side) (Ref. AMM TASK 27-34-51-000-001).
   (5) Disconnect the elevator from hinge fitting No. 4:
     (a) Disconnect the elevator support strut (16) (Ref. AMM TASK 55-16-48-000-001).
     (b) Remove the sleeve (17).
     (c) Make sure that the sleeve (17) is removed from hinge fitting No. 4 before you remove the elevator. Make sure that you do not cause damage to it during removal.
     (d) Remove and discard the cotter pin (6).
     (e) Remove the bolt (5) from the hinge support.
     (f) Remove the bush (4) from the hinge support. Make sure that you do not cause damage to it during removal.
NOTE: Hinge fitting No. 4 of the THS has a plain bush installed. It is important not to remove the plain bush during the removal of the bush (4).
   (6) Disconnect the elevator from hinge fittings No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6:
     (a) Remove and discard the cotter pins (6) and (9).
     (b) Remove the nuts (7).
     (c) Remove the bolts (5) from all the hinge supports.
     (d) Remove the shouldered bushes (4) from all the hinge supports. Make sure that you do not cause damage to them during removal.
NOTE: The hinge fittings of the THS have plain bushes installed. It is important not to remove these plain bushes during the removal of the shouldered bushes (4).
   (7) Carefully remove the elevator from the hinge arms and lower it onto a correct support.
