A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

CAUTION: REMOVE AND INSPECT THE SCAVENGE SCREEN PLUGS ONE BY ONE TO BE SURE OF THE ORIGIN OF THE PARTICLES.
A. Check of the Scavenge Screen Plugs for Debris (with or without optional magnetic bars installed):
NOTE: After the removal of each scavenge screen plug from the lube unit, we recommend to attach a tag to it. This tag will be pre-marked with the plug location related to the lube unit housing. To this end, we remind you that the lube unit (housing) casting is marked, on its bottom outer surface, with the sump indications that are in line with each scavenge screen plug. From the front to the rear of the installed lube unit, these sump indications read as follows: "REAR SCAV IN", "TGB SCAV IN", "FRONT SCAV IN" and "AGB SCAV IN". You can also use other indexing methods, such as matchmarking with (authorized) felt markers, as long as these methods are reliable and do not erase during handling and processing of the plugs.
   (1) Remove one by one the four scavenge screen plugs from the lubrication unit (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-10-000-007).
   (2) If magnetic bars are installed:
     (a) Remove the installed magnetic bars (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-080-001).
     (b) Carefully remove the particles from the magnetic bars with a clean cloth (lintless, cotton, process cleaning absorbent wiper such as cheese cloth or gauze).
     (c) Keep the particles from each sump separated and put them on separate thin sheets of paper.
   (3) Carefully remove the particles from the scavenge screens and keep them on thin sheets of paper.
   (4) Keep the material collected from each scavenge screen separate.
   (5) Use a MAGNET to separate the magnetic particles from the non-magnetic particles.
   (6) Remove the oil from the collected particles with stoddard solvent (Material No.CP2011) or white spirit (Material No.CP2010) .
   (7) Make sure that the scavenge screens are free of all particles.
   (8) Clean the scavenge screens with stoddard solvent (Material No.CP2011) .
   (9) Analyse particles (Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-281-005).
     (a) If you find Teflon (PTFE) material in the forward sump scavenge screen, do these steps:
NOTE: Teflon material is an indication of a deterioration of the No. 3 bearing forward stationary air seal abradable material.
1 Continue in service for a maximum of 10 flight cycles.
2 In not more than 10 flight cycles, do the steps that follow:
a Disconnect the forward sump oil scavenge tube from the lubrication unit (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-10-000-004).
b Do a visual inspection of the forward sump scavenge tube and the forward sump scavenge port on the lube unit.
  • Do an inspection of the tube internally for clogs or contamination.
  • If you find clogs or contamination inside the tube, remove the unwanted material.
c Do a borescope inspection of the forward sump oil scavenge tube. Use a BORESCOPE - FLEXIBLE and LIGHT SOURCE - INSPECTION or use the 856A1321 FIBERSCOPE SET and the 856A1322 BORESCOPE-LIGHT SOURCE SET.
  • Make sure that it is free of any plastic or organic material or dis-bonded Teflon. If you find any contamination inside the tube, remove the unwanted material.
d Install the forward sump oil scavenge tube on the lubrication unit (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-10-400-004).
e Do the flushing of oil system (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-005).
f For engines listed in CFM56-5B Service Bulletin 72-0945:
  • Decrease forward sump scavenge screen inspection interval to 250 flight hours. Return to usual inspection interval when the screen is found to be clean for five consecutive checks.
g Continue the engine in service if the oil consumption is in the limit (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-200-008).
     (b) If you find plastic or organic (non-Teflon) material in the forward sump scavenge screen, do this step:
NOTE: The plastic or organic material is an indication of a deterioration of the No. 3 bearing forward stationary air seal abradable material separator ducts and can include one or more of these:
  • Glass fiber with polyamide material with grooves (reddish-brown color),
  • Phenolic or plastic material (greenish-white color),
  • Resin polyamide material (green or brown color).
1 Continue the engine in service if the oil consumption is in the limit (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-200-008).

B. Installation of the Scavenge Screen Plugs:
   (1) Install the scavenge screen plugs in the lubrication unit (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-10-400-007).
5. Close-up

   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Close the fan cowls (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-410-040):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1), [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)
